* AdaptationalIntelligence: An alternate Cave Johnson introduced in the Perpetual Testing Initiative is still a CloudCuckooLander like the true Cave Prime, but this one actually comes to terms with the fact that his current practices are driving Aperture Laboratories to near-bankruptcy. He then comes up with a plan to piggyback on several other alternate Apertures to avoid having to pay for his own test chambers. It's also implied that he never got on board with purchasing moon rocks which would kill him, and after being audibly disturbed by how an alternate Cave turned out, he made sure to pull the plug on [[spoiler:the development of [=GLaDOS=]]] as soon as possible.
** Additionally, another alternate Cave managed to buy out [[VideoGame/HalfLife Black Mesa]]. After reviewing the inherited experiments, he immediately shut them down due to all of them potentially being able to start a [[ApocalypseHow Resonance Cascade]].
* AdaptationalVillainy: Doug Rattmann, the OnlySaneMan who opposed giving [=GLaDOS=] complete control over the facility, is a CorruptCorporateExecutive in an alternate reality who was embezzling funds from all the employees.

** The ''[[http://www.thinkwithportals.com/comic/ Lab Rat]]'' tie-in comic bridges the gap between the two games, as well as resolving the fate of the mysterious "Ratman" who scribbled on the walls. It also provides a lot of backstory, if you read between the lines, offering a possibility for where [=GLaDOS=] got the neurotoxin to begin with and explaining why Ratman drew cats on the walls in the sequel. [[spoiler:[=GLaDOS=] claimed to be experimenting with Schrodinger's Cat.]]

** If you can't figure out how to sabotage the Turret Control Line, Wheatley will eventually tell you to go get a rejected turret.

** One of the bits of garbage [=GLaDOS=] hurls at you is one of the old radios, playing the exact same version of "Still Alive" as the radios in the first ''Portal''. [[spoiler: As a callback to the "Transmission Received" challenge added to the first game, you can bring this radio to a hidden Ratman den in the level for an Achievement.]]

* ConspicuousConsumption: [[spoiler:After Perpetual!Cave and Dark!Cave find a "moneyverse" each, Perpetual!Cave spends some of the new near-infinite funding on several gold objects, as well as putting it towards test chamber construction.]]

** There is a secret Ratman den that shuts itself up after a certain amount of time. If you go in there during commentary mode, you'll see a commentary node. You'd think it's about the Ratman's Dens. It's not. It's nonsensical, ear-screeching noise that will make you wish you had your ear-canals emancipated. [[spoiler: It's the sound translation of an image file, [[http://valvearg.com/wiki/Com-arg.wav which details the pre-announcement Portal 2 ARG.]] You know, the one that also used image-to-sound converters.]]

* ExpendableAlternateUniverse: {{Exploited/Trope}}: Cave Johnson in the Perpetual Testing Initiative taps into the multiverse in an surprisingly-successful attempt to solve Aperture's funding crisis concerning test chamber construction. [[spoiler:This comes up later after he and Dark!Cave both find universes where ''everything'' is made of money. Both Caves take control of a universe each, solving the funding crisis.]]

*** Several of the Ratman's dens have a poem about eyes, with some of the eyes drawn as [[spoiler:phases of the moon. In the area where you pick up the first portal gun, hanging from the roof is a mural depicting the moon's phases.]]

* GilliganCut: [[spoiler: Wheatley]], having taken over the facility, is making Chell do test after test [[HereWeGoAgain again]]. [=GLaDOS=] remarks he'll run out eventually, as she never stockpiled test chambers. Cue [[spoiler: Wheatley]] announcing his discovery of a sealed wing containing hundreds of test chambers. [[UpToEleven With skeletons]].

--> '''Cave:''' The lab boys just informed me that I should not have mentioned the control group. They're telling me I oughtta stop making these pre-recorded messages. That gave me an idea: Make more pre-recorded messages. I pay the bills here, I can talk about the control group all damn day.\\\ '''Cave:''' The bean counters told me we literally could not afford to buy seven dollars worth of moon rocks, much less seventy million. Bought 'em anyway. Ground 'em up, mixed em into a gel.

* StupidityIsTheOnlyOption: Played straight, where the only option available is to fall for [=GLaDOS=]' trap. She even says she had prepared better traps for you when you got past this one, which doesn't make sense since there is literally no exit out of the room you're in except the trap. Lampshaded later on by [=GLaDOS=] when she remarks that the chamber you're about to enter is undoubtedly a trap but there's no other option. Also see ButThouMust.
