* HopelessBossFight: The game actually seems to throw ''two'' of these at you in a row [[spoiler: with Kratos and Yggdrasill]], but only the second one is hopeless. The first one is simply very, very hard, but not necessary to win (it's a lot easier if you use an All-Divide.)

* HopelessBossFight: The game actually seems to throw ''two'' of these at you in a row [[spoiler: with Kratos and Yggdrasill]], Yggdrasill]]. Neither one is actually hopeless: the first can be beaten on the first playthrough if you're very good, but only the second one is hopeless. The first one is simply very, very hard, will probably need you to be on a NewGamePlus to beat it, especially since it ends after a set amount of time no matter what. Winning [[HeadsIWinTailsYouLose doesn't alter the plot]], but not necessary to win (it's a lot easier if you use an All-Divide.)[[DevelopersForesight it does slightly change the cutscene after the boss fight]].

* ShortRangeGuyLongRangeGuy: The game's battle system allows characters to move freely, but heavy reliance on magic makes it a better idea for Genus and Raine to stay at long range. [[note]] Your resourcefulness and knowledge of the characters (and equippable items) will be put to the test in single coliseum tournaments. [[/note]]

*** Kratos and Zelus (Zelos) are the names of two [[spoiler: winged]] Greek god bothers that were in the service of Zeus. The mythological Kratos is the personification of strength and power, whereas Zelus is the personification of dedication, emulation, eager rivalry, envy, jealousy, and zeal.

The mythological Kratos is the personification of strength and power, whereas Zelus is the personification of dedication, emulation, eager rivalry, envy, jealousy, and zeal. And while this one might be coincidental, Colette's name is distantly derived from a variant on Nike, one of their sisters and the goddess of victory.

''Tales of Symphonia'' is a 2003 video game, the fifth game in Namco's famous ''TalesSeries''. It is the third to ever be released outside of Japan and the first in Europe. It stands as the third-top-selling game in the entire series, and was for a nearly a decade one of the few to break a million copies sold due to extensive worldwide sales - and thus was ''the'' best-seller internationally, natch, before ''VideoGame/TalesOfXillia'' [[http://www.siliconera.com/2014/12/11/bandai-namco-say-theyre-paying-attention-fans/ finally dethroned it]].

* ItSucksToBeTheChosenOne: A lot. For both Colette and Zelos. This was one of the reasons this game was notable - it was when the TalesSeries started to ''really'' embrace this trope.
