* ActorShipping: Usually Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst.
* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: A great deal of Aunt May's scenes (particularly the scene in Spider-Man 2 where she tells Peter why Spider-Man is important to the city and the scene in Spider-Man 3 where she acts shocked that Spider-Man killed Sandman) led fans to believe she's a SecretSecretKeeper who knows Peter is Spider-Man. * DamselScrappy: Good Lord, Mary Jane.
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn/Green Goblin = Win.
** J.K. Simmons' perfect portrayal of J. Jonah Jameson has won him the hearts of many people.
** [[RandySavage BOOONESAAAW'S]] REEEEAAAAADDDYYYYY!
** A number of people were rooting for an Ursula/Peter romance. Arguably, other than Aunt May, she's the only female in the second movie who loves Peter for being Peter.
** Thomas Haden Church plays the Sandman to utter perfection in the third film. In fact, of the entire series' rogues gallery, Church's Sandman looks the closest (read: EXACTLY) like his comic book counterpart.
* EvilIsCool: Played with to the point of parody or deconstruction in the third movie. Once Peter's bonded with the Venom symbiote, his moral restraint plummets, his feelings of aggression and confidence shoot through the roof and he adopts a dark, callous attitude and black leather wardrobe to match. However, since Peter is still, at heart, a lovable geek with no real idea what "cool" is, his new attitude's actually a goofily overdone caricature that draws eye-rolling disbelief from the people around him.
* EvilIsHammy: The Green Goblin.
** Eddie Brock after bonding with the Venom symbiote.
--> "Ooh, my Spider Sense is tingling, if you get what I talking about. ''[[SmugSnake Tiger]]''."
* FanPreferredCouple: Peter/Ursula.
* FauxSymbolism: In the second film, MJ is cast in ''TheImportanceOfBeingEarnest'', which is about people leading double lives. She plays the character who is unaware of the deception until the third act.
** Also in the third, when Peter pulls off his dark suit in the church. At one point, his arms are up and out from his sides, crucifix style. Complete with the church bells ringing. And Eddie praying to kill Spider-Man below. Yeah...
** Not to mention the shower afterwards. Recognition of sin, repentance, and baptism, perhaps?
** And Spidey sure mustn´t have noticed that big, flaming US flag when he chose to make his comeback...
* FightSceneFailure a.k.a. ''CurbStompBattle'': [[MuggingTheMonster High School Bully]] versus '''nascent superhero''' '''''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CO1v7NmhN4 for the win!]]'''''
* FoeYay: Spidey and the Green Goblin in the first film, though only on Gobby's end of things.
* FridgeBrilliance: The genetically-engineered spider was created by combining the DNA responsible for the attributes of 3 species of Spider. We see a graphic that the strands overwrite the Host DNA of the species it was implanted in. Because Peter's DNA is Human, thats why the mutation only causes him to develop the abilities, and not turn into a [[TheFly Seth Brundel abomination]].
* HamAndCheese: With a stupid-looking, limiting costume, the best thing Willem Dafoe could possibly do as the Green Goblin is go completely over the top.
** Same goes for J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson.
* HarsherInHindsight: Very much so. [[http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/actor-cliff-robertson-dies-at-88/2011/02/21/gIQAhTfqIK_story.html Uncle Ben was Cliff Robertson's last role.]] Borders on TearJerker territory.
** "[[spoiler:[[RedemptionEqualsDeath I will not die a monster!]]]]". Come ''Spider-Man: Comicbook/EndsOfTheEarth'' where [[spoiler:the dying Dr. Octopus' ''entire plan'' is to take ''[[MoralEventHorizon 7 billion people]]'' [[MoralEventHorizon down with him and be remembered as the greatest monster in human history]]]].
* HilariousInHindsight: In the HilariousOuttakes for the first movie, Creator/JKSimmons mispronounces "Spider-Man" as [[BamanPiderman "Piderman"]].
** The second movie features Mary Jane almost marrying J.J. Jameson's son, only to go back to Peter in the end. A few years later, we got ''SupermanReturns'', in which Lois Lane gets engaged to the nephew of Perry White much to the consternation of fans.
** "I'll always be Spider-man" became this around 2011 when the reboot was announced and Andrew Garfield took over.
** The first film features Norman Osborne trying to get the military to invest in his SuperSerum to creat SuperSoldiers. A competing company is instead proposing PoweredArmor. Then a [[MarvelCinematicUniverse few years later]] at the end of ''Film/TheIncredibleHulk'' cue Tony Stark lecturing to General Ross about how he'd been telling them that PoweredArmor was a better idea than using SuperSerum to create a SuperSoldier. The big difference being which method the military brass in each movie was in favor of.
* JerkassWoobie: Octavius in the second movie. And Harry Osborn all the time.
* JerkSue: To some, Mary Jane in ''2''. Even without knowing he's Spider-Man, she treats Peter as if he's a mass rapist because he missed her play, having NoSympathy for the fact that working two jobs to keep up his rent and struggling to keep his grades up, he doesn't have as much free time as say Harry, who's been to see it multiple times. When she finds out that Peter is Spider-Man [[RunawayBride she leaves her fiancée a note to say that he's been dumped AT THE WEDDING]], so she can be with a superhero, despite the fact that the poor guy was never portrayed as anything but an ideal husband-to-be. The movie treats her leaving him at the altar as ''a good thing'' and it's never even brought up in the third film, even though the groom was the son of [[BadBoss J. Jonah Jameson]].In Spider-Man 3, it's a little more subtle, but she still has some lingering traits of a JerkSue. Getting mad at Peter for sharing "[[MemeticMutation Our Kiss!]]" with Gwen may have been justified[[hottip:*: kissing Gwen may not have been Peter's idea but it didn't stop him from milking the situation for all it was worth]], it is however, worth noting that when they had "[[MemeticMutation That kiss]]", back in the first installment of the trilogy [[YourCheatingHeart she was dating Harry at the time]], so [[{{Hypocrite}} she gets mad at Peter for doing the exact same thing that she did]]. She treated both Peter and Harry pretty badly throughout the course of the movie series, (examples include making out with Spider-Man behind Harry's back in the first movie and then rubbing how amazing Spidey is in Harry's face over the phone, dumping him for another guy etc) and they're still fighting over her. Peter doesn't bat an eye when he blows Harry up with a grenade, yet when he accidently slaps MJ, [[BarBrawl who was trying to pull him off a bouncer]], it's treated as Peter's MoralEventHorizon and triggers a massive MyGodWhatHaveIDone. So when the black costume causes you to almost kill your best friend, it's nothing to worry about, but when your cheating ex gets hurt, the suit has to go.
* MemeticMutation:
** Spidey and Mary Jane's upside-down kiss.
** "BONESAW IS READY![[RiffTrax ... to move on with his life]]."
** [[OneSceneWonder Whoa... He stole that guy's PIZZAS!]] [=P1ZZ4=] Guy turned out to be one of the most popular fads in YTMND history.
* MoralEventHorizon: The Spider-Man movies have various villains cross this.
** The robber from the first movie crosses it when he [[spoiler:[[UngratefulBastard tries to shoot Peter Parker]], the same guy who, earlier on, deliberately got out of the way to let him get to the elevator to run from the cops.]]
** Green Goblin crosses it when he [[spoiler:[[SadisticChoice drops Spidey's girlfriend and a cable car full of children from over a bridge, trying to make Spidey choose to save one or the other]].]]
** Venom crosses it when he [[spoiler:kills Harry Osborn]].
* MsFanService: [[http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l6heo4vpyxc/TaSg-khy38I/AAAAAAAAABM/Z_LPHQoHVpQ/s1600/kirsten_dunst_see_through_nipple_pokie_Breast_nude_spiderman2.jpg Mary]] [[http://mimg.ugo.com/201103/5/3/3/178335/12137993-gal.jpg Jane]] [[http://heavyarmor.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/mj.png Watson]].
* {{Narm}}: The third film is pretty infamous for its weird tone, but special mention goes to Peter Parker's infamous dancing.
** Hearing Topher Grace's voice in his ''Venom form''.
** The second film had Doc Ock's artificially intelligent arms "talking" to him.
** From the original film: "It's you who's out, Gobby! Out of your mind!"
** The people being skeletonized by the pumpkin bombs is a little too cartoonish to be scary.
** Toward the end of ''2'', when Peter sees a big-ass wall about to collapse on MJ from behind, he lets out a ''wail'' that is not only ''really'' over the top, but comes with a close-up of his face as he makes it, and to make it even ''more'' Narmful his voice cracks more than once in the (rather long) non-BigNo BigNo.
*** It's not even a no, that's the [[NarmCharm best part]]. It's some awful, ungodly noise that escaped from the fires of hell and out of Tobey Maguire's mouth. [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=8hmOaKlDY1Q take a look.]]
** Green Goblin's death in the first film: impaled on his own weapon, the look of agony, the groaning... But look at [[GroinAttack where the glider hit him]].
* NeverLiveItDown: The first thing that anyone who hates ''Spider-Man 3'' will mention is the dance scene, which only lasted for a couple of minutes out of the movie.
* NightmareFetishist: MJ, oddly enough. In an early scene in the first movie, she expresses that she ''loves'' creepy, disgusting spiders.
* OlderThanTheyThink: The plots of 1, 2 and 3 mirror Superman, Superman II and Superman III. Part 1: Origin story. Part 2: "Don't want to be the hero". Part 3: Good hero and evil hero.
* OneSceneWonder: Bryce-Dallas Howard as Gwen Stacy does a pretty good job despite having a character so underused she was almost entirely redundant. One gets the impression she could have been a great love interest.
* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: Mary Jane in ''Spider-Man 3'' for a number of people, for being a more sympathetic character (provided you're [[ProtagonistCenteredMorality not 100% on Peter's side of arguments]]), and actually doing something to help Peter even while being held in distress by Venom.
* RetroactiveRecognition: [[{{Bones}} Emily Deschanel]], [[Film/TheFortyYearOldVirgin Elizabeth Banks]] and [[Series/{{Lost}} Daniel Dae Kim]] all found stardom some time after their initial appearances in the series.
* RomanticPlotTumor: A common criticism of the movies that they devote too much time to the love story, to the detriment of action.
** The third film receives the most criticism on this count, since many fans felt that the second film was a fine conclusion to the romance. The fact that the film had [[FourLinesAllWaiting three other major plotlines competing for screentime]] also caused problems. On the flip side, some thought the romance was ''better'' in the third film.
* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: It's hard to appreciate this film series after the massive success of DarkerAndEdgier comic book movies like ''Film/TheDarkKnightSaga''. The first film, alongside ''Film/XMen'' and ''Film/{{Blade}}'', helped bring back comic book/superhero movies after ''Film/BatmanAndRobin'' destroyed the genre.
* {{Sequelitis}}:
** There are actually quite a few people who consider ''Spider-Man 2'' to be an inferior sequel, even though it's generally regarded as the best film in the trilogy.
** ''Spider-Man 3'' is generally seen as the least effective installment in the series. Whether or not it's actually ''good'' divides audiences, though the consensus seems to be that the majority do.
* SpecialEffectFailure: As awesome as the effects generally are in the first film, there were a handful of instances where the effects team used obvious short-cuts, most notably with the rather amorphous and undetailed CG model of Spidey used in some of the instances of him swinging through the city.
* TearJerker: [[spoiler:Harry's death in the third movie.]]
** Uncle Ben dying in the first movie. Always a given with Spidey's origin, but this one comes with a twist: the last thing Peter said to him was a spiteful insult, only to then later ''watch'' him die.
** The birth of Sandman in the third movie, is such a hauntingly beautiful and sad scene that it's hard to believe it is from the same film as Peter Parker's "Saturday Night Fever dance."
* TragicVillain: Norman Osborn, before the "Goblin" takes him over completely. He might have been rough and far from a saint but his reaction to finding out he killed people was to be horrified. The way he's been treated seems rather unfair too: A major funder switches their funding to a clearly inferior solution because they personally dislike him and the board of directors fires him from the company he built to get more money.
** Doc Ock, a patient teacher and loving husband who inadvertently caused the gruesome death of his wife when his experiment went horribly wrong. After crossing to the dark side for much of the movie, he chooses to [[HeroicSacrifice sacrifice himself]] to [[DeathEqualsRedemption save the city in the end.]]
* VisualEffectsOfAwesome: All the films have excellent effects but the aforementioned birth of Sandman deserves a special mention. The effects (which took six months to do and the effort shows) are so good, you can actually see the emotion in Marko's eyes while he is in sandform. From despair to heartbreaking sadness and absolute determination. Say what you will about the rest of the film, but damn that was a brilliant scene.
* WhatAnIdiot: Why exactly did Peter think it would be a smart idea to plant a big wet one on Gwen Stacy right in front of Mary Jane in ''Spider-Man 3'', in the exact same way as he first kissed Mary Jane in the first film no less?
** What on Earth possessed Harry's butler to not tell him [[spoiler:he knew Norman had been killed by his own glider]] ''before'' Harry decided to dedicate his life to vengeance against Spider-Man?
*** [[spoiler: WordOfGod states that the butler, while a real person, was a hallucination in that scene, representing Harry's conscience....Yeah.]]
** There's also Mary Jane ''going along'' with Harry's blackmail instead of just telling Peter (her very powerful superhero boyfriend) about Harry's amnesia recovery, especially considering that Harry was watching from a distance at the same place at the time!
* WTHCastingAgency: Topher Grace as Venom elicited this reaction from many.
** Which is not too surprising since Eddie Brock is known for [[HeroicBuild having a home gym]], while Topher Grace is known for playing [[GeekPhysiques Eric Forman]] on ''That70sShow''.
** Rumor has it that this was on purpose. Apparently the [[ExecutiveMeddling studio forced Raimi to include Venom]] (a fan favorite and potential {{Spinoff}} character) even though the script didn't have him in it. Raimi was rightfully irritated by this and set out to cast someone as different from the comics as possible just for spite. To his credit, Topher Grace tried hard to work with what he was given.
** Surprisingly, this was the initial reaction when Tobey Maguire was cast as Spider-Man himself, as fans thought he was too "doughy" for the role (which he was at first, but months of long, hard training can change a man).
* TheWoobie: Sandman. The guy just want to get his daughter cured, and he don't want to hurt anybody else in the way, but things ''just never worked out for him.'' He sums it up well with "I'm not a bad guy...I've just had really bad luck." And by the way, just to get a picture of how rough things are for this guy? He says this line BEFORE [[FromBadToWorse he becomes the Sandman]].
** Peter himself is an obvious example. MJ and Harry also have their moments of Woobie-ness, particularly in ''Spider-Man 3''.

**
SuperPoweredEvilSide: The birth of Sandman in the third movie, is such a hauntingly beautiful and sad scene that it's hard to believe it is from the same film as Peter Parker's "Saturday Night Fever dance."
* WhatAnIdiot: Why exactly did Peter think it would be a smart idea to plant a big wet one on Gwen Stacy right in front of Mary Jane
Black Suit in ''Spider-Man 3'', in naturally.
** In
the exact same way as he first kissed Mary Jane in PS3 & 360 versions of the first film no less?
** Surprisingly, this was the initial reaction when Tobey Maguire was cast as
game, Spider-Man himself, as fans thought he was too "doughy" for wears the role (which he was suit permanently.
** In the PS2 & Wii versions of the game, Spider-Man can switch between the black suit and red & blue suits
at first, will, but months of long, hard training can change will have a man).
* TheWoobie: Sandman. The guy just want
harder time returning to get his daughter cured, and he don't want to hurt anybody else the red & blue suit the more time is spent in the way, but things ''just never worked out for him.'' He sums it up well with "I'm not a bad guy...I've just had really bad luck." And by the way, just to get a picture of how rough things are for this guy? He says this line BEFORE [[FromBadToWorse he becomes the Sandman]].
** Peter himself is an obvious example. MJ and Harry also have their moments of Woobie-ness, particularly in
black suit.
