* RatedMForManly: It's fundamentally a game about a muscular, gravelly-voiced badass called "Shank" tearing through hordes of Mooks with knives, so this is a given.

* AntiHero: Trying to say Shank is a good guy is a bit of a stretch, but he seems like a NiceGuy especially when he's near people he likes.
** PLayed Straight, in Shank 2 while he is somewhat reluctant on joining the Resistance. He does go out his own way to save various kidnapped civilians if he manages to pass by some of them.

* BagOfSpilling: A variation; at the start of the second game, Shank starts off with a pair of machete (likely the same pair he used in the first game) as his "heavy" weapon, and throwing knives for ranged attacks. He eventually gets his starting combo from the first game (pair of handguns and a chainsaw) as he progresses.

* Determinator: Shank holds his own next to VideoGame/MaxPayne for sheer iron plating; he's in potentially worse shape by the end of the game, and is running on his own badassitude and booze.
* DiesWideOpen: Most bosses. Shank leaves them like that most of the time, but he closes eyes.

* DropTheHammer: The last weapon you get in the second game. Very slow, but hits like a truck.
* DualWielding: Shank always has at least two shanks in his hands.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: Elena's not his mother, she just ran the orphanage where he grew up, but tough-as-nails criminal gangster Shank loves her anyway.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Even while working for the cartel, Shank still had a few lines he wouldn't cross. He's unflinchingly loyal and kind to his girlfriend , and has to be restrained from attacking Angelo after he casually shoots a priest. Even has a hint of this when Shank reveals that , telling Shank, "Had I known she was , that would have changed things..."
