'''Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance''' is the fifth canonical installment in the ''MortalKombat'' franchise, released for GameCube, PlayStation2, and {{Xbox}} in 2002. It picks up where '''VideoGame/MortalKombat4''' left off.

In ''Scorpion'''s ending in the past game, ''Quan Chi'' was imprisoned in the Netherrealm. However, he managed to escape from his fate, and while doing it, he discovered an ancient tomb with the mummified remains of Onaga, the Dragon King (and the dragon of the franchise's logo), the first emperor of Outworld. He concludes that the souls of the warriors must be implanted into new bodies in order to resurrect the dead army. So, he proposes a deal to ''Shang Tsung'': immortality in exchange of his help, something Tsung agrees. There're only two problems left: Shao Kahn and Liu Kang. They, then, [[BackStab kill Kahn while swearing him a false allegiance]] and then, Tsung, disguised as ''Kung Lao'', approaches Liu Kang, and kills him. Yep, [[OurHeroIsDead Liu Kang has been killed]]. After consuming his soul, Tsung and Chi return to the Outworld and start their plans to resurrect the fallen army. Should they succeed, they would be unstoppable. So, naturally, Raiden gathers the Earthrealm's greatest warriors in order to stop them.
