** There's the [[GoldfishPoopGang Elite Trio,]] fought in Dreamy Driftwood Shore after the reveal that [[spoiler:Peach was being impersonated and the real one was kidnapped all along.]]
** And then right before the end, you fight Antasma after [[spoiler:Bowser reveals that he had the Dream Stone in his power and his betrayal of Antasma, thus becoming the true BigBad.]]

* TheArtifact: This game introduced the ability to save the game at any time, rather than having to rely on a Save Block. However, Save Blocks are still present in this game and serve the same function, though this was most likely to still act as a sign that a boss fight was coming up.

* {{Badass}}: Even though [[spoiler:Bowser isn't a playable character anymore, he's just as {{Badass}} as he ever could be in this game - he manipulates an ancient, powerful nightmare creature to his benefit, [[DangerouslyGenreSavvy sets effective traps for the Mario Bros.]], and gets not one, but ''two'' [[OneWingedAngel giant powered-up forms]] that are quite challenging to beat - with the second one, his FinalBoss form, being just as spectacular as previous games' final bosses.]]

* DangerouslyGenreSavvy:
** You're never gonna believe this one: [[spoiler:it's '''Bowser'''. He is heavily implied to have been anticipating Antasma was just trying to use him to succeed from the very beginning, and was only waiting to get Peach, the Dream Stone and his new castle so he could kick the Bat King to the curb the moment he showed signs of malcontent. And so he chucks Antasma to the ground to be left at the mercy of the Mario Bros. while he leaves to conquer the world with his newfound power.]]
** Also, after beating him the dream world the first time, [[spoiler: He ''intentionally'' throws himself off a lethal height, knowing that Rump Command would activate in response to the critical wound and make him become Giant Bowser.]]
** Also shows up in [[spoiler:his giant battle. After being knocked into the lava by a sideways hammer attack, he calls in airships to erect a barrier there so Luigi can't do it again.]]
** Additionally, many enemies and bosses seem to focus their attacks on dazed, fallen or otherwise [[StandardStatusEffect status]] afflicted characters knowing that they can't dodge or fight back in this state. This is especially true of the Pi'illodium boss battle, where it'll use its stun inducing hammer attack on one character, then immediately attack straight after with something else and focus its full power on the currently near unconscious bro it hit just before for a possible KO.
** You could also count Earthwake's armour attack as this, since it uses the 'unmovable/unbreakable' armour JUST before its most deadly attack, counting on the fact Luigi can't move twice in one turn and ends up having to dodge/counter it.
** This is why Antasma created Dreamy Mario as the second boss battle. He was at the receiving end of a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown in Luigi's dream in the tutorial battle by Mario (not the real Mario, but the one in Luigi's dreams), so Antasma wanted to make sure even if the Mario Bros won, that Luigi's subconscious would remember that and not be as able to create an overpowered version of Mario in his dreams thereafter. [[spoiler: He still gets his behind whooped by the Mario Bros, of course.]]

* OhCrap: A Paratroopa has one when [[spoiler:Bowser, in his dream, appears to have jumped to his doom. GenreSavvy veterans of ''Bowser's Inside Story'' will probably also be making this expression, [[AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever but for a different reason]].]]

** For the Expert Challenges, Monolift R can be this. They're only found in the area of Pajamaja that leads to the [[PlotCoupon Pajamaja Rock Frame,]] relatively tiny compared to the main area. They also seem to have an uncommon spawn rate compared to Viruses in that zone, so if you accidentally kill it without getting the No Hitter or kill it on purpose thinking you can just find more, you'll have to backtrack there for the sole purpose of getting that challenge cleared.
** Shy Guy and Shy Guy Airtub Rs are only found in just about the very last area of the very last dungeon in the real world, and have a spawn rate as low as or even lower than the normal Airtubs. Plus, the attack they launch when you hit them with a Taunt Ball is extremely difficult to dodge perfectly as it is much faster than the same attack with the normal airtubs, meaning you'll likely have to find at least two of them to get those last 10 points.

** Bowser's portrayal within itself is a huge continuity nod to ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiBowsersInsideStory''. Corporal Paraplonk, Private Goomp, and Sergeant Guy have all been made elites, and Bowser retains and uses all the abilities he had in that game--including the [[VacuumMouth inhale ability]] and [[spoiler:the power to grow giant (though it's only used in his dreams, ironically).]]
