** But seriously, see FollowTheLeader below for what the game is ''really'' based on.

** But seriously, see FollowTheLeader below for what the game is ''really'' actually based on.off of the game ''Jinsei Owata no Daibouken'', an unfinished and [[PlatformHell equally sadistic]] platformer.

* StalactiteSpite: Most commonly done with fruits or spikes (see above), but there are some genuine stalactites in there too. Subverted at one point with ceiling spikes that tremble when you pass underneath them, but never fall.

Added DiffLines:

* RealMenWearPink: In Medium difficulty, the Kid wears a pink bow in his hair. However, it still takes tons of badassitude to get through.

Added DiffLines:

* TrashTheSet: How the Moon opens the way to the Zelda level and the Spike Wall opens the way to Kraidgief's hideout.

** In fact, the Moon does the same thing much, much earlier: throughout the ''VideoGame/GhostsNGoblins'' area, the Moon appears bigger and bigger with each screen. On the screen with a Full Moon, you head under it and the Moon falls down onto you. Instead of killing you, of course, it just breaks the floor and drops you into the Mecha-Birdo boss fight.

* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: The Kid, if you make it to the end. And let's face it, by the end of the game, you may not have wised up to ''all'' the tricks, but at least you know they're coming from somewhere.

* FollowTheLeader: The game is actually based off a Japanese flash game called ''Jinsei Owata no Daibouken'', also known as ''The Life-Ending Adventure''. [[WordOfGod As Kayin himself says]] [[http://kayin.pyoko.org/iwbtg/faq.php on the faq]], "I played a 2chan flash game that was stupid hard and thought, '[[LetsSeeYouDoBetter Hm, I can do better.]]'" Amazingly, ''Owata'' was [[ObviousBeta unfinished]] when Kayin played it. When the game was actually completed (well after the release of IWBTG), its final section ''[[spoiler: [[RecursiveAdaptation is literally taken from I Wanna Be The Guy itself]], [[{{Crossover}} with the Kid as the]] FinalBoss!]]''

Since the game's release, [[spoiler:four new upgrades to Windows have been released (Vista, 7, 8/8.1, 10), Windows XP stopped coming with OEM computers in 2010, and XP support was dropped in 2014, so anyone using a computer made since the 2010's will most likely be using a later Windows version and thus won't be fooled.]]

* HarderThanHard: The difficulties start at "Medium" and go ''up'' through "Hard", "Very Hard", up to "Impossible". The actual game itself is always the same no matter what level you're on. The only difference is the frequency of save points (and the EasyModeMockery on Medium). There are ''zero real'' save points on Impossible. You're expected to win the entire game with one life. In all literal seriousness, Impossible mode ''is'' possible, but requires quite a bit of memorization and a fair degree of benevolence from the [[LuckBasedMission more random luck-requiring bosses]]. When somebody eventually beat it, the creator's official response was [[http://kayin.pyoko.org/iwbtg/forums/index.php?topic=152.0 "holy crap your not serious are you"]].
