*** One item of interest is that Adam Scott and Kathryn Hahn were considered for the roles of Jim and Pam, respectively. They'd go on to play political rivals and later boss (her) and employee (him) on ''Series/ParksAndRecreation'', and played husband and wife on ''Film/StepBrothers''.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Indie darling Creator/ZooeyDeschanel was apparently offered a regular role on the show for Season 8, but ultimately turned it down in favor of the lead in the {{Fox}} sitcom ''{{Series/New Girl}}''.
** Will Arnett was seriously considered for the part of the next boss for Dunder Mifflin but was turned down as there were concerns that his new series would conflict with the schedule.
** Around the fourth season, there were talks to have Carol Burnett appear as Michael's mother in an episode but the idea never got off the ground.
** Although Ricky Gervais did appear on the show (twice!) as his character David Brent, there had previously been plans for Mackenzie Crook, Martin Freeman, and Lucy Davis to reprise their roles as Gareth, Tim, and Dawn during the show's fourth season. For whatever reason these plans fell through (some sources blame scheduling conflicts, others blame the writers' strike) and Gervais, who ironically ''wasn't'' planned to appear originally, was ultimately the only one who did.

* StarMakingRole: For the whole cast most notably Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Kransiski, Jenna Fischer, BJ Novack, Ed Helms, Craig Robinson, Ellie Kemper and Mindy Kaling. Steve Carell was already famous as a moviestar, and while Rainn Wilson and Jenna Fischer have had moderate success in film, Craig Robinson and Ed Helms have had big success in film thanks to this show.

* WrittenByCastMember: Paul Liebestein, Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak were on the writing staff from the beginning. Steve Carrell later wrote "Survivor Man" and Season 2 finale "Casino Night".

* WorkingTitle: ''The Office: An American Workplace''. This remains the MarketBasedTitle of the series in the UK (to avoid confusion with [[Series/TheOfficeUK the original series]]) and, curiously, is also the title of the documentary series itself InUniverse.

** B.J. Novak as Ryan - He's in the opening titles and is on the front of the DVD packaging, but has increasingly decreased in prominence as the show has gone on. This has largely been due to the increasing role he's played behind the scenes of the show.
