* AbilityOverAppearance: Cardinal Roark is a dwarf in the book, and Rutger Hauer isn't. Needless to say, he's a OneSceneWonder and most don't care that he's different.

** Michael Madsen amusingly shows up right after someone else gets their [[Film/ReservoirDogs ear blown off]]. Although this time ''he's'' the cop.
* ActorInspiredElement: Jackie Boy's make-up was Benicio Del Toro's idea. It was also his idea to have Jackie Boy pry the hands of his gun with his teeth.

* CreatorInJoke: Both Nancy and Wendy drive cars with the licence plate 'LEV 311'. Robert Rodriguez gives that to his favourite female characters in all his movies. It's a reference to his wife Lynn Varley, whose birthday is March 11th.
* DawsonCasting:
** Nancy is said to be nineteen years old. Jessica Alba was twenty four.
** Becky is implied to be much younger than the rest of the Old Town girls, possibly still a teenager. Alexis Bledel was twenty four, and only two years younger than Rosario Dawson.

* FakeShemp: Used a lot due to how the movie was shot. Since most of it was green screen, characters could be added in after certain scenes had already been shot. For example, when Marv takes Wendy to Nancy's apartment, Jessica Alba had not been cast yet - so she was added in later. Likewise, Mickey Rourke and Elijah Wood never met until the premiere - despite their characters interacting prominently in the movie.

* FreezeFrameBonus: A newspaper in "The Hard Goodbye" segment indicates that the film takes place in 1993.

* PlayingGertrude: Hartigan tells Nancy that he's old enough to be her grandfather. There's only twenty six years between him and Jessica Alba.
* RealLifeWritesThePlot: Jessica Alba signed on not knowing that Nancy dances completely naked. She asked for the nudity to be removed. Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller agreed, feeling there was no need for it.

* ThrowItIn: One of the biggest examples of this trope. Michael Madsen reportedly approached Robert Rodriguez at the ''Film/KillBill'' wrap party and asked why he hadn't been cast in ''Sin City'' yet. Rodriguez then gave him the role of Bob, the only part that hadn't been cast yet.

to:

* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Johnny Depp was the first choice for the role of Jackie Boy. But Robert Rodriguez saw Benicio Del Toro at the Academy Awards with long hair and immediately knew he was perfect.
** Leonardo Di Caprio was in talks for the role of Junior. But he eventually declined, and Nick Stahl was cast instead.
** The first film was planned to include the "Hell And Back" sequence with Johnny Depp as Wallace. It was eventually scrapped and didn't materialise in the sequel.

* ContractualPurity: It appears as if Elijah Wood and Alexis Bledel were attempting to break out of it. Wood had just come off playing Frodo Baggins, while Bledel had been known for ''Gilmore Girls'' and ''The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants''.

* HeyItsThatGuy: I guess [[Film/PlanetTerror Dakota Block]] felt guiltier about her son's death than she let on. Also, [[Series/{{Carnivale}} Ben Hawkins]] is a sick son-of-a-bitch.
** [[Series/TheAdventuresOfPeteAndPete Endless Mike Helstrom]] is Mr. Klump, and [[Series/ParksAndRecreation Ron Swanson]] is Mr. Schlubb.
** Apparently, [[Series/LawAndOrderSpecialVictimsUnit Detective Stabler]] decided to transfer to Sin City.
** In the second movie, Music/LadyGaga makes a [[TheCameo cameo]] appearance as a waitress in a GreasySpoon. The unglamourousness of the part makes her almost unrecognizable.

* ActorAllusion: When one cop advises another to kill Hartigan without hesitation, they're quickly dispatched and Hartigan quips "Good advice". In ''Film/DieHard'', a terrorist who tells John [=McClane=] to kill without hesitation is offed, with [=McClane=] snarking "Thanks for the advice". Both played by Creator/BruceWillis, lying on his back and shooting upwards both times. FrankMiller even said that he thought of that very scene from ''Die Hard'' when he drew that scenario in "That Yellow Bastard". [[HilariousInHindsight Little did he know…]]

Added DiffLines:

** Gail calls Dwight 'Lancelot.' Around this time Clive Owen had also starred in ''Film/KingArthur'', though playing Arthur and not Lancelot.
** Jamie Chung takes up a sword to become a fearsome warrior in the second movie, around the time she was doing it in [[Series/OnceUponATime another show]].
