** Originally, Frillish and Jellicent were supposed to be just a pure Water-type species, but were changed to be Water/Ghost (a type combination that hasn't been seen prior to Generation V) for the sake of distribution. This resulted in their creator (a new artist working at Creator/GameFreak) being disappointed with the scary aspects (such as causing ships that cross its habitat to be sunken and all of the passengers on board to end up missing) being added to what was supposed to just be some normal jellyfish based on princes and princesses.

* FanNickname: Lots and lots of them:
** Snivy is known as [[SmugSnake Smugleaf/SmugSnake]]. It was called Snivy even then, but the name wasn't nearly as popular as Smugleaf (which [[http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/e/e3/NZAU_Magazine_Scan.jpg even the game journalists were asking for!]]). Some also call Snivy [[Manga/SoulEater "Excalibur"]]. Alternatively, [[WesternAnimation/SonicTheHedgehogSatAM Snively]].
** Snivy's final evolution, Serperior, is known as "Smuglord" by the fans.
** Oshawott was known as [[TheWoobie Wotter]]/[[WesternAnimation/SouthPark Derpderp]]/Sno{{woobie}}/[[CuteLittleFangs Vampijumaru]]. With the reveal of its English name, we have [[Franchise/MetalGear Revolver Oshawott]], which then inspired "Solid Snivy" and "Tepig Boss", as seen [[http://www.halolz.com/2010/11/24/revolver-oshawatt/ here.]]
** Samurott was called Shellgun towards the beginning of the Generation.
** [[http://www.pokecommunity.com/group.php?groupid=2435 Seed Bby]], also known as Petilil/Churine, is gathering quite a following on the PokéCommmunity Forums.
** Braviary is known as [[Series/TheColbertReport Colbeagle]], [[WebVideo/YuGiOhTheAbridgedSeries Keith]], [[IncrediblyLamePun Tomahawk]], [[VideoGame/KirbySuperStar Dyna Blade]], and [=AmeriCAW=]! Its pre-evo, Rufflet, is referred to as Freeglet.
** Alomomola is known as Sexdisc/Luvhands/Hatedisc.
** Sandile is known as Swagodile/Cool Croc/Crocostyle/Gaterrain. Its final form, Krookodile, is commonly called [[Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann Kamina]]croc because of his sunglasses and overall badassery.
** Excadrill is known as [[VideoGame/BioShock Big Daddy]]. Many of the people who refer to Krookodile as Kaminacroc call Excadrill [[Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann Simole the Digger]].
** The Dragon-type Haxorus is known as Axeface.
** [[TabletopGame/YuGiOh Blue Eyes White Dragon & Red Eyes Black Dragon]] for Reshiram and Zekrom. Unfortunately, there is no third dragon nickname for Kyurem.
** Reuniclus is known as Gummy Bear/Booger/Jelly Green Ghost/Flying Salad Monster.
** Tepig had too many puns to have a generally agreed nickname. Popular ones include [[PunnyName Pignite, Pignition, Boarbecue, Hamferno, Burncon, Piglit, Spork, Keroswine and Blazorback]]. Pignite ended up becoming the official name of its second stage.
** Emboar has been called [[Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda Ganon, Ganonpork, Gammondorf]], and [[Literature/TheLordOfTheRings Hamdalf]].
** The female PlayerCharacter is known as White. It has also been used in screenshots of her as another player; Black visits her World.
** Don George and Swanna have both been called "Carl" for their slight resemblance to the ''WesternAnimation/AquaTeenHungerForce'' character while the new early bug, Sewaddle, is going by Countapillar, Bugleaf, Smugbug, Fraterpie, Collarpillar and Vampillar. [[http://28.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lg7r15zjti1qfkq3ro1_500.jpg A comparison.]]
** Bouffalant already [[IHaveManyNames has too many nicknames to count]], but all of them note [[FunnyAfro a particular feature in its appearance]]. [[AscendedMeme Its official English name even uses said feature as a name basis.]]
** Sarcophaghost for Cofagrigus. However, that exceeds the games' character limit, so coming up with shorter names is a bit of a pastime. Another is Koffin.
** Thanks to people mishearing his battle theme, Ghetsis is often jokingly called "DENNIS". For a short while, it also applied to Genesect when dataminers assumed Ghetsis' battle music belonged to it. Other nicknames for Ghetsis include [[SpellMyNameWithAnS Geechisu, Geetis]], and (thanks to Website/FourChan) Gaycheese.
** "Pokémon Gray/Grey" for the third game that never happened.
** "Plankster", "Jokirder", and "Clowncrete" for Timburr, Gurdurr, and Conkeldurr respectively. Timburr is also called [[WesternAnimation/EdEddNEddy Jonny]] quite a bit for that plank it carries around all the time.
** The member of the Elite Four who uses Fighting types is Westley Snipes.
** The Elite Four was nicknamed "Mystery Inc." due to a few resemblances to the titular ''WesternAnimation/ScoobyDoo'' characters. Shauntal being Velma, Grimsley being Shaggy, Caitlin being Daphne, and Marshal being Fred.
** Swoobat is the Derp Bat.
** Stunfisk is Derpfish.
** Ghetsis's Hydreigon has been dubbed [[TheComputerIsACheatingBastard Haxdreigon]] and variations thereof.
*** Similarly, quite a few fans have taken to calling Elesa's Emolgas [[ThatOneBoss "demons"]]. Although this isn't so much a nickname as it is an insult.
** Also from 4chan, Galvantula has been dubbed "Tarantesla".
** Throh and Sawk get called [[Series/SesameStreet Bert and Ernie]] a lot due to their resemblance to the ''Series/SesameStreet'' characters. Alternatively, Judo Jim and Karate Carl.
** Thundurus is often referred to as "Thundy", while Landorus is often called [[Franchise/StarWars Lando]] or ComicStrip/{{Garfield}}.
** PONY for Keldeo and its resemblance to ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'''s character designs.
** Elesa is often known as Music/LadyGaga.
** "Reimu" was used for Cilan prior to his official name being revealed.

* DummiedOut: In both ''Black and White'' and its sequels the Johto starters had data for their Hidden Abilities, but they wouldn't be accessible to players until Gen VI.

to:

* DummiedOut: In both ''Black DummiedOut:
** Several Pokémon were programmed with Hidden Abilities that were ultimately not available through legitimate means. While some were obtainable in later generations
and White'' and its sequels events, there were a few that were not:
*** The Legendary Birds were given Hidden Abilities, but they were unavailable to players until February of 2016. [[TheComputerIsACheatingBastard This doesn't stop
the AI from using them in the Battle facilities.]] Notable in this regard is Zapdos' Hidden Ability of Lightning Rod; not only was Zapdos unobtainable with this Ability in Gen V, but from Gen VI onwards, it was changed to Static.
*** The
Johto starters had data for their Hidden Abilities, but they wouldn't be accessible to players until Gen VI. VI.
*** The Legendary Beasts were given Hidden Abilities, but up until the Virtual Console releases of the Generation II games, there was no way to obtain them legitimately. Even so, ''VideoGame/PokemonSunAndMoon'' changed them to Inner Focus from Volt Absorb, Flash Fire, and Water Absorb.
*** The Regi trio were all given Hidden Abilities, but they cannot be obtained by the player. A Global Link event did make them available for Gen VI games, however.
*** Litwick and its evolutions had the Hidden Ability ''[[YouWillNotEvadeMe Shadow Tag]]''. Due to the limited availability of Hidden Abilities and the fact that this one was never released, the only way to get a Chandelure with Shadow Tag was by hacking. It can't be transferred to Gen VI through Pokémon Bank, as it's no longer considered a legal ability.
** Generation V was the first generation to have "Shiny-locked Pokémon", mostly to avoid discrepancies with the overworld sprites and in-game cutscenes for the legendaries. However, these Pokémon still have shiny sprites within the game's data to prevent the game from crashing while attempting to load a non-existent sprite:
*** Even though Victini has a Shiny palette, the one in Liberty Garden is locked into always being its default colors. As a Mythical Pokémon, all subsequent Victini have been direct downloads, none of which have used the Shiny skin — meaning Victini is one of a few Pokémon that can't legitimately be Shiny.
*** Keldeo has Shiny colors, but so far, it is only available through direct downloads — none of which have allowed it to be Shiny.
*** Reshiram and Zekrom both have Shiny sprites, but they're both hard-coded to never use them, and no legal method of getting them within those games ever existed. Starting with ''[[VideoGame/PokemonRubyAndSapphire Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire]]'', though, their Shiny colours can appear.
*** Meloetta has a Shiny skin, but it can't be legitimately obtained as of 2018, since every Meloetta event to date has used its regular colors.
** [[ShockAndAwe Freeze Shock]] and [[PlayingWithFire Ice Burn]], both reserved for Kyurem in ''VideoGame/PokemonBlack2AndWhite2'', are in the game's data despite no Pokémon being able to learn them, possibly to avoid compatibility issues.
** Within the game's data is the God Stone; a grey stone similar to the Light and Dark Stones, and presumably a sealed Kyurem. Unlike Freeze Shock and Ice Burn, however, this wasn't used for the sequels.

** [[http://lavacutcontent.com/ken-sugimori-nintendo-dream/ Translated]] [[http://lavacutcontent.com/ken-sugimori-nintendo-dream-2/ interviews]] with Ken Sugimori revealed a few interesting notes about the development of Gen V's Pokémon designs:
*** Tornadus was going to be red to contrast with Thundurus's blue, but that was changed because that made them too similar to Sawk and Throh. Sawk and Throh were also going to be based on onis, but their horns were removed to help differentiate them.
*** There was an early concept for an ant Pokémon that would've also been the world's smallest Pokémon. The concept was set aside when the development team made Durant a counterpart to Heatmor.
*** Petilil was going to be part of a three-stage evolutionary line, but this was changed to two because there already too many Grass-types in the game.
*** The Dwebble line were going to have their shells made out of pottery and be known as "Furnace Pokémon".
*** The original concept for the Litwick line was to have a flame Pokémon evolve into a candle and then a lamp. The development team found it hard to justify the transition from flame to candle, so the candle became the first stage of the evolutionary line.
