** According to Rebecca Mader, she expected to do an American accent to play Zelena - since the Wicked Witch comes from an American fairy tale. But the creators insisted on using her natural accent, and she was the first choice for the role.

(Conversely, Bo Beep (who appears in season 4's "White Out") has an English accent, but was played by American actress Robin Weigert.

Added DiffLines:

* AbsenteeActor: Robert Carlyle, for three episodes... and Raphael Sbarge for a lot more than three.
** Season 2 featured several episodes in which lead actors are absent as the storyline focuses on one specific set of actors for an episode. Ruby/Red is probably the most noteworthy example, to the point where the character was quietly written out towards the end of the season after the actress was cast in [[Series/{{Intelligence2014}} another series]]. However, she has guest-starred in a couple of episodes during the second half of the third season. In Season 5, her departure is shown as well as what's she's been doing since then.
** Colin O'Donoghue for several episodes of the latter part of season 2, due to a broken leg.
** Alan Dale didn't show up at all in season 3.
** A bizarre case in the second half of season 3. [[spoiler:Michael Raymond-James's character has been killed off, and yet his name is still in the opening credits three episodes later]]. He finally reappears in [[spoiler:"A Curious Thing" as the one who sent Hook the message to find Emma in New York by briefly leaving Rumplestiltskin's body]].

** Especially notable in "Tallahassee" which features Jennifer Morrison and Michael Raymond James as the teenaged versions of Emma and Neal. By the time Season 3 came around, Jennifer Morrison was too old to convincingly play Emma as a teen, and so Abby Ross was cast to make this slightly better.

** Cora's younger self is played by Creator/RoseMcGowan, who had just turned forty. Her age isn't stated in the flashbacks, but she's implied to have been late twenties at the oldest.

** Merrin Dungey dyed her hair blonde for Ursula.

* FakeScot:
** Merida's parents are both played by Irish actors. The other people from Dun Broch are likewise played by local Canadian actors. Averted with Merida herself, who is played by Scottish actress Amy Manson.
** English actor Stephen Lord puts on a Scottish accent to play Rumple's father Malcolm.

* FreezeFrameBonus: In Season 4, a quick glance around Rumplestiltskin's castle shows that he hold Mjolnir, aka Thor's hammer. As noted above, David references Asgard in another episode.
* HideYourPregnancy:
** Snow White becomes pregnant midway through Season 3 to accommodate Ginnifer Goodwin's real life pregnancy. But in the episodes before this is revealed, you can see the familiar tricks of her wearing big coats and loose tops. The Season 3 finale, after she's given birth, features time travel to the events of a Season 1 episode. It's obvious when they switch from archive footage to newly shot stuff, as Snow gains a double chin. Luckily she was already wearing a long black cloak in the episode.
** Emilie de Ravin's pregnancy was also written into Season 5. But flashbacks in Belle's episodes shoot her from the chest up. She also [[spoiler: willingly undergoes a sleeping curse]] to allow Emilie to hide the bump and allow for a TimeSkip.
** Ginnifer Goodwin was also pregnant a second time in Season 5. They kept Snow in big coats and wrote her out of the storyline temporarily to hide it.

** Mulan was quickly written out of the series, due to Jamie Chung being cast in another series.

to:

* RomanceOnTheSet: Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas married in real life. Yes, that's right, [[LifeImitatesArt Snow White and Prince Charming fell in love]].

**
Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas married in real life. Yes, that's right, [[LifeImitatesArt Snow White and Prince Charming fell in love]].

* SeparatedAtBirthCasting:
** As has been widely publicised, Ginnifer Goodwin and Jennifer Morrison have frequently been mistaken for each other so many times. So they're a perfect fit to play mother and daughter. Jennifer Morrison also shares some features with her on-screen father Josh Dallas.
** Abby Ross, who plays Emma as a teen, has a strong resemblance to Jennifer Morrison too. As does the uncredited young actress who plays Emma's child self in "The Dark Swan".
** There's also a very good resemblance between Lana Parrilla and Barbara Hershey, who play mother and daughter. Creator/RoseMcGowan was also praised for looking uncannily like Hershey's younger self when she played the young Cora.

* UnreliableExpositor: Emma claims to have been 18 when she had Henry, but he was already 10 when she turned 28, meaning she had to have been 17 when she gave birth to him.
** In Manhattan (which at the most is 6 months after the pilot) Henry is 11, making Emma 16 when she was pregnant.

** Regina and Henry's relationship from season 2 onward is only a result of Lana Parrilla (Regina) pushing the writers for it.
*** The same is true for Regina and Robin's relationship, somewhat...she only pushed for a romance for Regina, the choice of Robin Hood for the love interest is the writers' doing.

* ActorInspiredElement: Elizabeth Mitchell suggested that Ingrid be barefoot, as she found it hard to walk in the woods while wearing high heels.

* AwesomeDearBoy:
** As noted above, David Anders signed on when he was told [[spoiler: he was actually playing Dr Frankenstein]].
** Rebecca Mader was a huge fan of the show and claims she screamed in public when she was offered a role. She agreed before she even knew which role it was.
** Merrin Dungey likewise immediately agreed to move to Vancouver to film and dye her hair blonde, as she had been a big fan of ''Disney/TheLittleMermaid'' - and jumped at the chance to play Ursula.
** Georgina Haig had a reaction like this to being cast as Elsa. She describes walking around in the costume as "like being Santa Claus".

** Nicole Munoz was twenty when she played Lily at 16.

to:

** Nicole Munoz was twenty when she played Lily at 16. And since the show is a little vague on how much time has passed since the first episode, the adult Lily is this too. There's a seven year age gap between Agnes Bruckner and Jennifer Morrison, despite their characters supposedly being the same age.

Added DiffLines:

** Peter Pan's age is vague, but he's meant to be an eternal little boy. Robbie Kaye was eighteen.

Added DiffLines:

* TheOtherMarty: Paula Marshall was first cast as Maleficent, but was later replaced by Kristen Bauer von Straten.

Added DiffLines:

** Sidney was PutOnABus in Season 2, due to Giancarlo Esposito being too busy with ''Revolution''. TheBusCameBack briefly in Season 4.

** [[Music/TheWho Roger Daltrey]] played the Caterpillar. No wonder he asked [[ShoutOut "Who are you?]] [[ActorAllusion Who Who Who Who"]].
