* WriteWhoYouKnow: Charlotte Brontë wrote some of the main characters based on the people she met. In particular, Helen Burns was inspired by Charlotte's sister Maria, who died young from consumption. She also had to write a letter of apology to one Reverend William Carus Wilson, the founder of the charity school the Brontë sisters attended as girls, to avoid a defamation suit over Mr. Brocklehurst and Lowood (even so, one contemporary reader remarked that she had absolutely ''nailed'' the portrayal).
