Added DiffLines:

** According to Rockstar, they played around with the idea of multiple protagonists for this game, presumably one for each city. While this was eventually dropped, it resurfaced later in GTA V. The idea was scrapped probably because of hardware limitations, but this could explain CJ's slight personality quirks throughout the storyline.

* UsefulNotes/DeggansRule: The game has a black main protagonist, CJ. His family and gang are also black, but the supporting cast beyond that is fairly diverse. The only time the subject of race is brought up is when his brother Sweet and sister Kendl argue over her dating a Latino, Caesar, but the relationship endures and Caesar becomes one of CJ's most loyal allies.

* RetroactiveRecognition: Tarnell's voice actor is Shawn Fonteno, who would later voiced and motion captured Franklin Clinton in ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoV''. It also made him one of the few voice actors in ''Series/GrandTheftAuto'' to appear in two different universes (SA is part of 3D Universe, V is part of HD Universe).

* UsefulNotes/MediaClassifications: Thanks to the discovery of the HotCoffeeMinigame and the game's subsequent re-rating, San Andreas holds the distinction of being the only game on a major console to be rated AO by the ESRB, as all three major console manufacturers forbid AO rated games on their platform.

* HeyItsThatGuy: Where to begin? It is as much fun playing "spot the superstar" here as you did in ''[[VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoViceCity GTA: Vice City.]]''
** Ryder is voiced by MC Eiht (fans will recognize his signature "ch'yeah").
** Faizon Love -- Big Worm from ''Film/{{Friday}}'' -- is your brother Sweet.
** Creator/SamuelLJackson and Chris Penn play the villains, Officers Tenpenny and Pulaski respectively.
** Peter Fonda is The Truth, Creator/DavidCross is Zero, James Woods is Mike Toreno, Music/IceT is Madd Dogg.
** The DJ for the Classic Rock station (K-DST) is voiced by [[Music/GunsNRoses Axl Rose]], who often takes shots at the heavy metal/grunge station Radio X. Radio X plays ''Welcome to the Jungle''.
** Chuck D of Music/PublicEnemy fame as "Forthright MC" on Playback FM and Motherfunking Music/GeorgeClinton himself as "The Funktopus" on Bounce FM. There are no Parliament/Funkadelic tracks in the game, but Bounce FM features a melody of many songs by the P-Funk collective, and sometimes, in the outro to "Rebel Without A Pause" Chuck D says "now Public Enemy is a group I have always been behind!" The meta here is sickening.
** Creator/WilWheaton also provides his take on KentBrockmanNews as Richard Burns on WCTR
** And Michael Bivins of New Edition and Bell Biv Devoe as the DJ of the new jack swing station CSR.

* WhyFandomCantHaveNiceThings: After the "Hot Coffee" scandal,[[note]]The game contained a sex scene that was disabled from accessing but not entirely deleted; then a {{Game Mod}}der found it and enabled it by literally changing a single bit. Rockstar Games naturally MisBlamed the modder in question until said modder proved in a press conference that he didn't do anything but enable it causing massive controversy and Rockstar's reputation took a massive hit.[[/note]] the "Second Edition" re-release removed mod support entirely. Of course, gamers already found a way around version 2.0, so when that happened, Rockstar released version 3.0, making it even harder to mod.

* ThrowItIn: The random plane crashes were a glitch Rockstar discovered during beta testing, due to a spawned plane's randomly set trajectory sometimes intersecting with the ground. They found the crashes so funny and appropriate for the comedic CrapsackWorld setting that they left the glitch alone.

* ThrowItIn: The random plane crashes were a glitch Rockstar discovered during beta testing, due to a spawned plane's randomly set trajectory sometimes intersecting with the ground. On occasion planes would crash for no reason, a result of a less-than-airtight approach to random generation of flight paths that allowed the possibility of planes' trajectories intersecting with the ground. They found the crashes so funny and appropriate for the comedic CrapsackWorld setting that they left the glitch alone. (Though it did tend to annoy the occasional player who suddenly found their character wasted because of being in the path of said plane crash!)

Added DiffLines:

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: The mission "Saint Mark's Bistro" was originally going to have the player chase the target through the streets of Portland Island. Due to the large amount of work that implementing an entire district of a city for one mission, the mission was instead placed inside the Bistro.
