* ThrowItIn: A somewhat dark example: the scene where everyone is running away from the water after the lab window breaks ''actually happened'': the tank broke and the actors had to suddenly run away from three tons of water. [[EnforcedMethodActing The terror in their faces as they run for their lives is real]]. Renny Harlin decided to keep the footage in.

* ExecutiveMeddling: Originally, [[spoiler: Dr. Susan was to survive and Preacher would be sharked.]] Test audiences found [[spoiler: Susan]] to be such an [[TheScrappy irritating twerp]] that this was inverted. [[RuleOfCool Makes for a damn fine climax]].

* ShoutOut: To ''Film/{{Jaws}}'', of course. It opens with the shark's POV, the scene where Susan confronts a shark in the lab is similar to the one with Brody inside the sinking Orca, and [[spoiler:two of the sharks are blown (like in the original) and one is electrocuted (like in ''Film/{{Jaws 2}}'').]]
** Even the way the sharks attack is reminiscent of several Jaws movies. As an example, how the shark tears off the arm of one of the scientists is from ''Film/JawsTheRevenge'', and when the shark crashes against the window is from ''Film/Jaws3D''.
** Preacher's hiding in the oven looks a lot like a similar scene in ''Franchise/JurassicPark''.
** The scene of the vertical-shaft climb is a clear homage to ''ThePoseidonAdventure''.
