** HideoKojima is such a huge fan of the entire series that he's put at least two major references to it in his last two VideoGame/MetalGear games: Altaïr's outfit in VideoGame/MetalGearSolid4 and the hay pile in VideoGame/MetalGearSolidPeaceWalker.
** Also,
** Also in Brotherhood, when you first meet Leonardo you get a mission to find out where a noise is coming from. After going down some stairs you find a cardboard box in a corner.

** This has caused the series, and Unity in particular, to suffer in quality. Thus Ubisoft has decided to put in a year break dedicated to developing the game following Syndicate to avoid another disaster and at the same time avoid over exposure with the movie's release.

* MissionCreep: While they have been said to exist in some form or the other from before the modern era, the contemporary Assassins descend from the Asasiyun of Masyaf. They were originally Warrior Monks who operated in fortresses and specialized solely in assassination. As the Templars went underground, the Assassins changed tactics and expanded their operations to meet their overall goal (Peace, Freedom, Suppressing the Templars), so instead of solely killing targets, the Assassins would help scholars, artists, architects, town planners, local businesses, revolutionaries, and rebels. Modern-day Assassins spend a lot of their time in corporate espionage, hacking and cyberwarfare, and averting solar catastrophes but are unable to entirely evolve beyond their original "oppose all Templars" view.
* MobstacleCourse: Fortunately, you can shove them away. In the second game, Ezio can create these with well-aimed money tosses. It's a pretty convenient way of blocking pursuing guards for a few seconds while you're running away. In Revelations, Ezio can use a Pyrite Bomb to scatter fake coins at a distance, distracting guards and civilians alike.
* MoraleMechanic: Brutally kill a few guards and some or all of the rest may flee. Strangely, this behavior vanished from VideoGame/AssassinsCreedIII onwards.

Added DiffLines:

* MissingTrailerScene: According to several interviews with Ubisoft, this was done deliberately to avoid spoiling anything.
** The E3 trailer for the first game shows Altaïr assassinating a Templar who is about to hang someone, shooting his bodyguard with a crossbow on the way. Nothing of the sort happens in the game, and crossbows were not available until two games later, in Brotherhood.
** The trailer for AC II shows Ezio chasing and shooting a masked Templar with his Hidden Gun during Venezia's Carnevale. Said Templar only appears in multiplayer, nowhere to be seen in the actual game, although a similar assassination does happen, but with a different victim and very different circumstances.
** Brotherhoods trailer shows Ezio challenging and fighting Cesare head-on in Rome; no such scene occurs in the game, and when you do fight Cesare, your Assassin Recruits are not available to help, and it doesn't occur in Rome.
** Averted with Revelations, whose trailer is the only one to show a canonical scene; in this case it doubles as the game's introduction.
** In the AC III trailer, Connor charges a British firing line head-on and assassinates their commander. This appears to be based on an early draft of the Battle of Bunker Hill, but trying to complete that mission in the fashion Connor did in the trailer is impossible.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: As per Creator/NolanNorth in a 2015 discussion, the initial idea for the series was that Desmond would eventually appear in a GrandFinale as the ultimate Assassin after imbibing the abilities of all his ancestors and that the finale would have had Desmond going back and forth in time as he becomes an Assassin in the present day. This idea changed when the series became a purely historical series.

This idea changed had to be abandoned when the series became writers realized that they didn't like the direction Desmond's story and characterization were headed and they couldn't figure out a purely historical series. way to fix it, leading to the setting shift beginning in Black Flag.

* HeyItsThatVoice:
** Creator/KristenBell voices Lucy Stillman, Vidic's lab assistant who operates the animus, . Desmond is voiced by Creator/NolanNorth, who in turn is voiced by Nolan North's dub seiyuu Creator/HirokiTochi.
** And for anime fans, in Japanese dub Altaïr is voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi aka Kamina (noticeably audible here).
** Desmond and Lucy's Italian actors are respectively Sasuke and Tenten.
** And for any Quebecers (where the game is from), the voice of Garnier de Naplouse (Hubert Fielden) is the French-Canadian dub voice for Dumbledore PlayingAgainstType (you may have recognized him as the Old Man in PrinceOfPersia Warrior Within). But there is more!
*** Ezio's french canadian voice is Captain Jack Sparrow.
*** Connor is Sam Flynn.
*** Haytam is dubbed by a certain white dog with a long nose.
** For anyone (re)playing this game after the sequels, the Rafiq in Damascus and some of the generic citizens have the same voice actor as Leonardo.
** Arthur Holden (Mr. Ratburn) is Sibrand.
** Any British comedy fans playing the first Assassin's Creed might've heard the distinctive voice of Josie Lawrence.
** The german Connor still defends freedom during WWII as Film/CaptainAmericaTheFirstAvenger.
*** Faulkners german voice actor sadly isn´t Joshammee Gibbs but Davy Jones.
** Federico Auditore was voiced by Scipio (Elias Toufexis). Meanwhile, Anna (Liane Balaban) voiced Lucrezia Borgia in Brotherhood.

* CelebrityVoiceActor: Mostly averted. The only celebrity voice actors usually only show up in the "Modern Day" settings of the series, and even then, once KristenBell left (perhaps not coincidentally after her mainstream breakout role in ForgettingSarahMarshall), the celebrities are probably only recognizable to Star Trek fans (John De Lancie) or fans of British humorists (Danny Wallace).
