* [[TheCaptain Capt. Dennis Stanhope]], the ShellShockedSenior (a rather tragic example, he's in his early 20s). He drinks heavily to deal with the war but won't take any time off because of a sense of duty and a fear that everyone he knows at home, including his fiancée, will find out what he's become.

JerkWithAHeartOfGold: The [[JustifiedTrope stress of the war]] has left Stanhope with a severe drinking problem and a short temper, but he's still the same NiceGuy he was implied to be before deep down. Most apparent when he [[spoiler: comforts Raleigh as he's dying.]]

%% commented out as ZeroContextExample * SadClown: Hardy and Hibbert. Hibbert both try to snark and put on a cheerful face, but are clearly as traumatised as anyone. Everyone is trying to be one in the meal scene scene, by pretending to cheerfully enjoy a meal while pretending they aren't in a muddy hole, just days from a massive attack [[spoiler: just after they've lost Osbourne]] (except for Raleigh who can't bring himself to). %% commented out as ZeroContextExample * WarIsHell: It shows the conditions of the trenches quite candidly, based on R. on second thought, i don't see by whom it is implied. It could well be a misinterpretation by a troper, in which case it doesn't belong even with context

commenting out some Zero Context Examples; cutting Five Man Band for bad context, lack of roles explanation in the trope list and brutal shoehorn alarm in form of calling the play a partial deconstruction, a cleanup thread is available for further info and queries; cutting World War One as redirect and Useful Notes item, neither of which should be an entry on trope example lists; regarding Osbourne in A Father To His Men, he could be called uncle for not being an aunt, for being old, for wearing Uncle Sam cosplay or for having a broken ankle

Could be viewed as a partial [[DeconstructedTrope Deconstruction]] since TheHero is flawed and often bullying, TheSmartGuy is using his brains to try and leave the team, not help it, and TheChick [[BreakTheCutie has his naivete brutally crushed]] * HopelessWar: Most of the main characters feel that the war is ultimately pointless. * JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Stanhope could qualify to be one, but it's [[JustifiedTrope caused by the war]]. * KickTheDog: Stanhope to Raleigh and Hibbert.

Good Looking Privates now only deals with in-story acknowledgement that the person is better looking because of the uniform. Re-add with correct context if this example fits.
* GoodLookingPrivates: Raleigh, according to the dialogue ** Stanhope too, even more so than Raleigh, if we are to believe the script.
