*** The real tear jerker is that had not been captured by the Locust, he undoubtably would have survived the entire trilogy, perhaps into Gears 4 as well. He could've been a CoolOldGuy philosopher who would've been able to pass down his experiences and philosophies to the remaining humans, inspiring mental fortitude within them to help deal with the ridiculously hard future they have ahead of them.
** The rookie in Gears of War 2, Ben . What else to say? The guy lost in the first game, gets drafted into the the same squad and exhibits the same impulsive combat behaviour, which greatly concerns Marcus and Dom who still have IdiotHero 's death fresh in memory. Ben stays upbeat along the way, tries to be heroic and live up to the standards of his teammates while Marcus and Dom, familiar with the grim reality of the war, realize things aren't going to end well this time around either. They're right.

* GearsOfWar 2. Ever since the war started, Dom has been trying to find his missing wife, Maria. He doesn't get anywhere in the first game, but it's a major plot thread in the second. [[spoiler: Dom finally finds Maria, and at first she seems exactly how he remembered. But, as he embraces her she starts to slip out of his hands, Marcus tells him to look again, and it's revealed he was hallucinating. Instead of being his beautiful wife, Maria is now an emaciated, brain-dead shell, reduced to nothing after months of torture. Dom tries to talk her out of it until he realizes the only moral thing he can do is euthanize her himself.]] Quite possibly the single most powerful, painful, and gut-wrenchingly horrifying moment seen in a video game.

* "You ever feel like you're dead, but nobody told you?" One line is all one needs to understand the distance that separates the Augustus Cole of the present from the Cole Train he was at the start of the war. GearsOfWar is really a game that is best at being quite subtle about the pain its characters endure, and that line sums up everything about Cole so succinctly. A collectible you pick up also reveals that Cole lost his family on E-Day and that he joined the army six days later.

* Speaking of Mercy Kills, there is an Easter Egg in the graveyard in Act 3: [[spoiler:There are several gravestones engraved with letters, and by destroying them in order to spell "Maria", two ghostly lights appear by the exit and re-enact Maria's death cutscene as Dom's dialogue plays. And then she shot rings out, and the lights are gone. In their place is Dom's PreciousPhoto of himself and Maria, and the Memento Mori -- a spectral Boltok Pistol that can OneHitKill anything in the game, but only has about a dozen shots that can't be replenished]].

** If all the tomato plants in the green house are destroyed, Marcus flips out and goes on a long rant which is a Crowning Moment of Funny. Buried in there though is a small tear jerker when he mentions the seeds came from the tomatoes Dom had grown. Marcus was growing his late best friend's plants. Triggering this dialogue means he just watched them get wrecked in front of him.

** And then, just to drive the point home and twist the knife, you're treated to a mournful echo of the piano intro of Gary Jules' "Mad World."
* Just before then, Dom kneeling before the stone angel in the graveyard and talking to Maria, then leaving his COG tag around the statue's neck. It's a chilling clue that Dom wasn't expecting to be alive much longer.

Added DiffLines:

* It really is heartbreaking to see just how strained Marcus' relationship with JD is. Almost every word they say to each other comes off as SnarkToSnarkCombat and according to Del, it's the norm for them to be constantly yelling at each other. It's shown that Marcus really didn't want JD to join the COG and a lot of his frustration with his son stems from this, but JD just wanted to live up to his family's legacy and make his parents proud. Should the player decide to visit , before meeting Marcus, you can see a typical conversation between the two.
