* Oliver's torture in Kapiushon in which Chase finally gets Oliver to admit that Oliver kills not just for Justice or to protect but because he finds satisfaction from killing people. What sells it is just how after Oliver screams it he has a MyGodWhatHaveIDone after realizing that in his own way he is no better than the criminals that he has put down. When Oliver returns to the Arrowcave the look in his eyes isn't just a look of defeat but of pure shame of himself.

** A smaller note but the look at Malcom Merlyn in this world is sad in its own way. It shows that, had his wife not been murdered, Malcom could truly have been a good man and loving father to Tommy and not the monster everyone knows in the real world.

** Rene's backstory is very heartbreaking to watch. In every scene you can see him slowly break, going from TranquilFury when he confronts his wife about her drug problem to teetering on the DispairEventHorizon when the fight with the dealer kills her. It culminates into him sitting as a shell of his former self, pitifully begging to even see his daughter. It's such a contrast from the hothead, aggressive man we know him as that he's almost unrecognizable as he trying to regain some semblance of his life back.

** The villain of the week, James Edlund, also had a sad story as he lost everyone in his family because of a shootout at a mall and became so angry he attacked the people in the City Hall for not passing a gun regulation law that could had prevented their deaths.

** The only way for Felicity to prevent the nuclear warhead from landing on the city of Monument Point (which has millions of people) is to direct it towards its suburb of Havenrock...which kills tens of thousands of people. And Felicity feels she now has to live with that guilt.
** Also, Felicity suffers from other things like Anxiety and Abandonment Issues. Now imagine what will spawn from her killing innocent people to save millions more.

** [[spoiler:The scenario after Laurel's death in general. Let's start with another tragedy hitting the Lance family yet again, and none of them were there to say their goodbyes to Laurel. Then, her death was directly caused by family members of Team Arrow (Andy and Malcolm), and you could see (and feel) the guilt on Diggle's BrokenTears. Lastly, Thea loses yet another significant adult in her life in the span of four years (her paternal brother, her mother, her biological father to the dark side, and now the woman who is practically and essentially her older sister).]]

** Also Deadshot's backstory is shown as the Flashback side-story throughout the episode, in the most brutally realistic fashion. It's revealed that Lawton use to serve in the military and returned home to live a normal life with his family. But, his daughter never accepted him because he was never there for them while she grew up, causing her to distance herself from him. Then, we flash forward to see his life fall apart. Lawton's unable to get a steady job, turned to alcoholism and scaring his daughter. When his wife tries to help him, Lawton finally snaps and nearly kills her, while mentioning what he's been through while serving. His wife (understandably) calls the police, sending him to prison. However, a bails him out of prison in order to perform a job for her.
