Getting ahead of the group, the prince finds a peaceful spot by an enchanted lake with swans gently floating across. Siegfried notices that the most beautiful swan with a crown on its head. His buddies soon catch up, but he orders them to leave so he can be by himself. As dusk falls, the swan with the crown turns into the most beautiful young woman he has ever seen. She is Odette, the Swan Queen. She informs the young prince that an evil sorcerer, von Rothbart (unbeknownst to Siegfried, his own tutor) has transformed her and the other maidens into swans, the lake having been formed by the their own parents' tears. She tells him that the only way the spell could be broken would be if a man, pure in heart, pledges his love to her. However, von Rothbart, fearing the failure of his plans, uses his occult powers to transform his own daughter, Odile, into the likeness of Odette...
