Misuse of both tropes. Not all Villain Protagonists are Complete Monsters, and Designated Hero as a Complete Monster is extremely rare. A character with Blue And Orange Morality cannot be called truly malevolent.

Designated Protagonist Syndrome has been renamed to Vanilla Protagonist along with being redefined. This was because the trope was being misused to complain about protagonist the editor didn't like and generally as a "flaw" or "problem". Tropes Are Tools.
