* ''VideoGame/PokemonDiamondAndPearl'' has several references to SomethingAwful as a result of Nob Ogasawara, one of the series' lead translators, frequenting the forums under the pseudonym Douglas Dinsdale. For example, a female trainer with a Wooper is named "Roxy" after the name chosen for the main character of LetsPlay/{{Chorocojo}}'s LetsPlay of ''Pokémon Crystal'' that decided to get rid of her Totodile because it was evil, and replaced it with a Wooper. Also, after you fight an Artist trainer, he tells you he's been inspired to paint a picture called "My Pokémon is Fight!", a reference to Zack Parson's book ''My Tank Is Fight!''

* The contraption [=AJ=] put on his Sandshrew is a reference to the 1960s baseball anime ''Kyojin no Hoshi''.  * In the Japanese version of "Bulbasaur and the Hidden Garden" James says "Tornado!" before striking a baseball pitcher pose and says a wind storm caused by Ash's Pidgeotto is like Nomo Hideo, a reference to a Japanese baseball player whose nickname was "Tornado". * In "Electric Shock Showdown" Jessie does a cheer pose similar to the protagonist of ''Aa! Hana No Ouendan''.

* ''VideoGame/PokemonXAndY'' seem like they may have been designed with ''Literature/TheHunchbackOfNotreDame'' in mind, both the original and the [[Disney/TheHunchbackOfNotreDame Disney]] version. Along with the France-based setting and the "beauty" theme, there's also a tragic, deformed giant heavily involved with a loved one, a genocidal AntiVillain who is also tragic but nonetheless believes in mass extermination [[WellIntentionedExtremist for the greater good]][[note]]which is closer to the original Frollo than the Disney version[[/note]], and closing credits set to an AwardBaitSong and a parchment-like background[[note]]lifted straight from the Disney version[[/note]]... all that's missing is the "parental abuse" subplot[[note]]which was already covered in ''Black'' and ''White''[[/note]] and an analogue to the Notre Dame cathedral itself. ** The [[spoiler: Kalos Pokémon League]] is very cathedral-like in structure. [[spoiler: Makes sense, as the final battles are fought there.]] * In X and Y, the first gym's gimmick is you being forced to traverse a gigantic spider web. The last trainer you fight just before reaching Viola is a [[Literature/CharlottesWeb Lass named Charlotte]]. Speaking of the Gym Leader at the end of the spider web, Viola is a [[Franchise/SpiderMan photographer]]. ** Xerneas shares similarities with The Spirit Of The Forest from the film ''Anime/PrincessMononoke''. Both resemble deer-like creatures with elaborate antlers. Both are associated with the ability to bring life. And, both are considered powerful creatures of legend in both their respective franchises. ** One of the people in the Furfrou fanciers' cafe in Lumiose City mentions that he gives a good-bye kiss to each of his Furfrou before heading to work. [[Literature/TheHundredAndOneDalmatians All 101 of them]]. ** After defeating the first trainer on Route 10, he will respond with: "Wow! You and your Pokemon's power levels are incredible! [[Anime/DragonBallZ They're over 9,000 for sure!]]" ** "Only Team Flare's [[Music/TheBeeGees stayin' alive, stayin' alive]]." ** A trainer in Victory Road greets you with "After all the training I've received here on Victory Road, [[Memes/{{Nintendo}} my body is ready!]]" ** During your final battle with [[spoiler:Lysandre]], he adopts a strange tentacled harness that strongly resembles [[Film/SpiderMan2 Doctor Octopus]]. ** One female [=NPC=] in Lumiose City asks if you have heard the story of ''Literature/BeautyAndTheBeast'', which, according to her, is about a prince who got turned into a Pokémon and a woman who loved him in spite of it. [[FridgeBrilliance If the real life story is anything to go by, the Pokémon version probably originated in Kalos, the region X and Y take place in.]] ** The Anistar Gym starts off as a seemingly normal-looking tiny room until you step in the center and it reveals to be [[BiggerOnTheInside a huge maze filled with various Pokemon-themed constellations.]] Sounds like a subtle shout-out to a [[Series/DoctorWho certain science fiction series]], doesn't it? ** Once you will defeat a certain Preschooler on Route 4, she will say "[[Memes/TheLegendOfZelda Hey! Hey! Listen!]]" * One of the {{Flavor Text}}s for Super Training in X and Y is "Float like a Butterfree, sting like a Beedrill", a reference to Muhammed Ali's famous quote, "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee," which was often his strategy during boxing, besides the Rope-a-Dope. Remember - you can't hit what you can't see. * In X and Y, on Route 15, you can find a Hex Maniac standing in front of a ruined building. What's her name? [[{{Literature/Carrie}} Carrie.]] And she has a Litwick in her team, another nod to the book.

* Four of the Fairy Tale Girls at the Battle Maison in X and Y are named after female characters from French fairy tales (Kalos being based on France). There's Aurore ([[Literature/SleepingBeauty Sleeping Beauty's]] daughter's name in the original Perrault version and Sleeping Beauty herself's name in the ballet version), Abricotine (a fairy princess in [[http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/authors/aulnoy/1892/princeariel.html The Imp Prince]] by Madame d'Aulnoy), Blondine (Princess Belle-Etoile's mother in [[http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/authors/aulnoy/1892/princessbelleetoile.html Princess Belle-Etoile]], also by Madame d'Aulnoy), and Rosanella (the protagonist of a [[http://www.mythfolklore.net/andrewlang/359.htm fairy tale by the same name]] by the Comte de Caylus).

* AZ is a former King or "Lord" whom we don't know his real name. Lived for thousands of years, and ended a massive war by killing everyone on both sides, which the aftermath haunted him for the rest of his life. [[Series/DoctorWho Does this sound familiar?]] [[note]] Though due to the TimeyWimeyBall, the massive deaths in Doctor Who were retconned [[/note]]

* Musical shout outs can be found from time to time, usually in episode titles such as "[[Music/{{Nirvana}} Smells Like Team Spirit]]" or "Music/TearsForFears". The stealth shout-out award goes to Casey, however, when watching a (losing) baseball game, she says, "[[Music/SimonAndGarfunkel Where have you gone, Cory DiMario?]]" Meowth does one in [=XY17=]: "[[Music/TheOffspring You gotta keep 'em separated!]]" * [[http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Oscar_and_Andi Oscar and Andi]] in "The Bicker the Better" to ''Manga/RoseOfVersailles''. * [[http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/BW057 BW057]] has [[http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Charles Charles]], a ''Franchise/KamenRider'' {{homage}} so obvious it ''hurts''. * [[VigilanteMan Wild Jenny]] in "Stealing the Conversation" is suspiciously similar to ''Film/DirtyHarry''.

He even has the same name! * Platinum's family name comes from the [[http://www.berlitz.com/ Berlitz Corporation]], a worldwide company meant to train people in language and global leadership skills. * In the BW chapter, a Biker wears a jacket that says GOD SPEED YOU, referring to a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_Speed_You!_Black_Emperor 1976 Japanese documentary]]. * Two of Cheren's male students are apparently [[VideoGame/EarthBound Ness and Porky]], while two female ones appear to be Franchise/LoveLive characters. * One issue had Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar [[note]] one wants to say "Gastlies," "Haunters," and "Gengars"[[/note]] infesting a town and being captured by some ''Franchise/{{Ghostbusters}}''-type characters.
