Annie and Smitty are both "extractors" -- Annie, with Kat's help, is going after the mysterious green arrow that killed Jeanne's boyfriend and locked Jeanne's spirit in the gorge while Smitty's powers combined with Parley's ensures that everyone can *bip* in and out safely. Red is there for... moral support]].

** It takes Kat several panels to get across a really long room to reach Annie, similar to [[MontyPythonAndTheHolyGrail Sir Lancelot's charge to Swamp Castle]].
** The room itself is reminiscent of the one at the end of ''TwoThousandOne'', minus the Versailles furnishings: it's very AsceticAesthetic and not quite "right" (the room in ''2001'' had lights on the floor and mixed modern and antique furniture; this room has similar-looking lights in the ceiling and is just plain [[UnnecessarilyLargeInterior impractical]]). Another similar room is Syndrome's computer room in ''WesternAnimation/TheIncredibles'' (huge, tall, plain, modernist room).

** Surma is shown with giant [[RegalRinglets ringlets of hair]] (previously she had a [[QuirkyCurls cloud-like mass of curls]] or stylized spirals), similar to ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse'''s mother Rose Quartz. Also similar to Rose they both have pink hair, both are loved by all, [[spoiler: they're not quite human (Surma is half fire-elemental; Rose is a humanoid living rock alien), both die/cease to exist after giving birth to their children because of the way their "souls" work, and their "muggle" husbands don't understand the process of their wives' "reproduction".]]
