* MistakenForGay / UnsettlingGenderReveal: In one episode, Sally unknowingly dates a gay man who thinks she's a gay, male crossdresser, if not a pre-op transsexual, and breaks up with her when he notices she's not entirely what he expected.

As the Solomon family, the aliens infiltrate the UsefulNotes/Ohio college town of Rutherford where mediocrity reigns despite it being a QuirkyTown. The commander of the aliens is Dick Solomon, a pompous ManChild with an ego the size of Jupiter playing the role of a professor of physics at nearby Pendleton University. His "sister" Sally is a seasoned commando now "the" woman, his "son" Tommy is a crotchety information officer going as a teenager, and "the brother" Harry is a... well, technically he's the communications officer, but is really a WackyGuy with an antenna in his head. Their original species also doesn't have different genders, leading to much confusion and LampshadeHanging of human Index in their new forms.

The local Earthlings include Dick's insecure office mate and love interest Dr. Mary Albright, her SassySecretary Nina Campbell, Sally's cop boyfriend Officer Don Orville, and the Solomons' eccentric Landlord landlady Mrs. Dubcek. The more the Solomons view HumansThroughAlienEyes, the more they realize that HumansAreSpecial. Some people think the show stuck with the FishOutOfWater notion far too long -- unlike others, such as WesternAnimation/Futurama, where main character Fry eventually got used to his new surroundings -- the main gag of this series remained the same, but can be justified as RuleOfFunny. Though, to be fair, it would take years and years for anyone to adjust to a world completely unlike their own. So, if anything, Futurama is at fault here. As an added bonus, the series can easily be watched out of order, if you avoid the first and last episodes of a given season.
