* BigBrotherInstinct: Hearing "Shannon" in distress is what makes Boone summon the strength to cut himself free from Locke's bindings in the jungle. Flashbacks reveal that Shannon exploited this quality (and her belief that Boone is in love with her) to get money out of him. After hallucinating Shannon's death, an enraged Boone nearly stabs Locke before realizing that Shannon is totally unharmed. The trope is also deconstructed, as Boone's attachment to Shannon is portrayed as unhealthy for him; hallucinating her death made him feel "relieved", and the whole reason Locke drugged him in the first place was so Boone could learn to let go of Shannon.

* CrypticBackgroundReference: According to Boone, Shannon was once briefly married. No other information is given, and Shannon's marriage is never brought up again.

* EntertaininglyWrong: Kate surmises that the reason that Locke isn't bringing back boar on his supposed hunting excursions is because the boar is thinning out and Locke doesn't want to feed everyone at his own expense

to:

* EntertaininglyWrong: Kate surmises that the reason that Locke isn't bringing back boar on his supposed hunting excursions is because the boar is thinning out and Locke doesn't want to feed everyone at his own expenseexpense.

* NoHonorAmongThieves: Despite helping Shannon con Boone and showing some sympathy for her [[WickedStepmother stepmother's treatment of her]], Bryan ultimately steals all of the money and leaves Shannon with nothing.

* TapOnTheHead: Locke knocks Boone unconscious by hitting him with the butt of his knife. Unusually for this trope, [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome Boone is left with a bloody wound on his head afterwards]].

* WhamLine: Boone attacks Locke, believing, as does the audience that Shannon has been killed by the Monster after Locke tied them both up in the jungle. When Boone says that Shannon died in his arms, Locke asks "then why is there no blood on you?", revealing Locke had done nothing to Shannon, who is perfectly fine; the entire thing was an hallucination, caused by a drug Locke applied to a head wound of Boone's.

* WickedStepmother: According to Bryan, Boone's mother "screwed [Shannon] over" after her father died, denying her any inheritance. Notably, although angry with Shannon for conning him, Boone doesn't say anything to contradict this.

* AgonyOfTheFeet: Hurley stepping a sea urchin; he later tells Michael that it's something to wish on your worst enemy.
* AmbiguousSituation: While Boone was definitely hallucinating Shannon and her death, it's less clear if he was also hallucinating the Monster; the Monster is only heard, not seen, and it's attack on Shannon is definitely a hallucination, but whether the Monster was legitimately anywhere near Boone is never confirmed.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: When Kate questions why Sun won't come clean to Jin about knowing English, Sun asks "have you never lied to a man you've loved?", which quickly shuts Kate up.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Mentioned by name; Kate claims that she'd been planning to head to Bali after being in Australia (and is probably telling the truth, since she's saying this to Sun before realising that she understands English), and was looking forward to exploring the island, only to wind up on this Island after [[Recap/LostS01E03TabulaRasa circumstances]] put her on a flight to Los Angeles.
After hallucinating Shannon's death, an enraged Boone nearly stabs Locke

* DidTheyOrDidntThey: It's not confirmed whether or not Boone and Shannon actually had sex.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Sayid's discussion of Locke's malfunctioning compass foreshadows the Island's unique magnetic properties, which will become very important from Season 2 onwards.

to:

* BlatantLies: Locke and Boone cover up their trips to the Hatch by claiming to be hunting boar. As they aren't coming back with any, people express their doubts about the story.
* BuffySpeak: Not knowing what the seeds are actually for, Jack calls passion fruit seeds "gross little greyish-yellow things" and guava seeds "slimy little bluish-black things".
* BullyingADragon: [[HeroicWannabe Boone]] tries to pull a MySisterIsOffLimits on [[GeniusBruiser Sayid]]. Sayid isn't the least bit intimidated by Boone's attitude, casually dismissing his "suggestion", and Locke explicitly warns Boone against making an enemy of him, both because he considers Sayid very competent and a potential ally, and because Boone is obviously seriously outmatched by Sayid.
* ContinuityNod:
** Sayid gifts Shannon with a pair of salvaged shoes for [[Recap/LostS01E12WhateverTheCaseMayBe helping him with Rousseau's notes]].
** Hurley thinks Jin has it in for him because he [[Recap/LostS01E03TabulaRasa declined Jin's offer of sea urchin]].
** Charlie admits to Jack that Locke [[Recap/LostS01E07TheMoth saved his life]].
* DidTheyOrDidntThey: It's not confirmed whether or not Boone and Shannon actually had sex.sex.
* DomesticAbuse: Subverted; Boone comes to Australia under the impression that Shannon is being abused by her boyfriend Bryan, but the reality is that the abuse is being staged so that Shannon can fleece Boone for money, having been denied her inheritance by Boone's mother after her father died.
* EntertaininglyWrong: Kate surmises that the reason that Locke isn't bringing back boar on his supposed hunting excursions is because the boar is thinning out and Locke doesn't want to feed everyone at his own expense
* EveryManHasHisPrice: Bryan initially declines Boone's offered bribe of $25,000, citing his love for Shannon... then says he'll break up with her for $50,000. Subverted, as Bryan neither loves Shannon, nor is he even her boyfriend; they're working together to con Boone, and he's just trying to get more money out of him as part of that.
* EveryoneHasStandards:
** Bryan, despite being perfectly willing to cheat Boone out of $50,000, expresses disdain for Boone's mother cheating Shannon out of her inheritance, and he tells Boone off for angrily calling Shannon a bitch. None of this stops him from taking all of the money for himself and skipping town, however.
** Despite repeatedly conning Boone out of his money, Shannon is visibly guilty about her actions when Bryan lays it all out for Boone
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** Sayid's discussion of Locke's malfunctioning compass foreshadows the Island's unique magnetic properties, which will become very important from Season 2 onwards.

* {{Foreshadowing}}: Sayid's discussion ** Boone mentions that Shannon has been in a cycle of Locke's malfunctioning compass foreshadows abusive relationships and tells Bryan that he would be the Island's unique magnetic properties, third man Boone has paid to break up with Shannon; it's revealed later in the episode that this is a recurring con Shannon is using to fleece Boone for money.
* FriendshipMoment:
** Kate and Sun working on the latter's garden,
which will become very important from Season 2 onwards. leads to Sun being willing to trust Kate with her secret.
** Jin giving Hurley a fish (already gutted and cleaned to boot) after Hurley steps on a sea urchin.

Added DiffLines:

* GoryDiscretionShot: The audience never sees what the Monster does to Shannon in Boone's hallucination, but when Boone finds her "body", she's a ravaged, bloody mess.
* JerkassHasAPoint: The detective Boone tries to report Bryan to is quite snarky (hearing that Boone runs a wedding clothing business, he half-seriously offers to sell his wife's wedding dress), but he's correct that without physical evidence or a complaint from Shannon, there's nothing the police can do.
* LaserGuidedKarma: After Shannon has repeatedly scammed Boone out of his money, she finds herself left high and dry when Bryan takes all the money and leaves; Boone even remarks that "the player [getting] played" sounds poetic.

Added DiffLines:

* MinorInjuryOverreaction: Hurley freaks out over a sea urchin in his foot and assumes that the injury needs to be disinfected ([[ToiletHumor by peeing on it]]); as Jin points out, all he actually needs to do is pull the spines out.

Added DiffLines:

* OhCrap: Sun, when she realises that she let her facade of not understanding English slip in front of Kate.
* PoliceAreUseless: The detective Boone speaks to about Shannon's supposedly abusive boyfriend is snarky and decidedly unhelpful, and manages to forget Shannon's name during his brief discussion with Boone. That said, he does make the [[JerkassHasAPoint legitimate point]] that the police can't simply act on Boone's word without any other evidence.
* ToiletHumor:
** Jack asks Hurley if he plans to eat some large leaves that Hurley gathered; his stomach groaning, Hurley says they're not for eating and quickly excuses himself.
** Hurley's insistence that Jin pee on his foot to help with an urchin in his foot; Jin [[BilingualBonus points out]] that he's thinking of jellyfish stings and calls him an idiot for thinking peeing on his foot will help.
* TricksterMentor: Rather than try to directly teach Boone to let go of Shannon, Locke knocks him out and drugs him with an hallucinogen, sending Boone on something of a vision quest that allows him to realise that he needs to let go of his attachment to Shannon.

Boone approaches Sayid and rather aggressively tells him to stay away from Shannon. Sayid seems unthreatened by Boone. Their tense conversation is interrupted by Locke, who calls Boone away to examine what they found in the woods -- a hatch in the ground. Locke tells Boone that he should try to make peace with Sayid. Boone informs Locke that people are starting to wonder what've they been doing together since they found it, but Locke is unconcerned.

Jack sees Kate sitting by herself, gathering some passion fruit seeds. She shows him a herb garden that Sun has been working on. Kate theorizes that Locke has decided to stop catching boar for the survivors to keep it for himself.

Boone is growing impatient with his and Locke's lack of progress in opening the hatch, and is not won over by Locke telling him a story about Michelangelo's David. Locke mushes a strange paste together in a bowl.

->'''Locke:''' Ludovico Buonarrati,
Michelangelo's David. father. He was a wealthy man. He had no understanding of the divinity in his son, so he beat him. No child of his was going to use his hands for a living. So, Michelangelo learned not to use his hands. Years later a visiting prince came into Michelangelo's studio and found the master staring at a single 18 foot block of marble. Then he knew that the rumors were true -- that Michelangelo had come in everyday for the last four months, stared at the marble, and gone home for his supper. So the prince asked the obvious -- what are you doing? And Michelangelo turned around and looked at him, and whispered, sto lavorando, I'm working. Three years later that block of marble was the statue of David.

At the beach, Hurley asks Jin to point him to where he should fish, but Jin laughs him off. In the jungle, Boone and Locke argue over whether or not they should tell the other survivors about the hatch, with Locke stating that they're "not ready". Boone insists on at least telling Shannon. Locke knocks Boone out and ties him up. Locke wipes the paste he made on Boone's head wound, then gives him his knife and leaves him where he is. He tells him that he'll be able to grab the knife once he has "the proper motivation". Boone struggles with his restraints, but can't reach the knife to cut himself free.

Kate talks to Sun while they work on the garden together, and is shocked to discover Sun speaks English when she notices her smiling at one of her jokes. Sun asks Kate not to tell anyone.
At the beach, Hurley is having little success fishing. He steps on an urchin, and yells at an uncomprehending Jin that he needs to pee on his foot. In the jungle, Sayid uses a magnet to fashion a makeshift compass while looking over Rousseau's map. Locke comes across him and gives him a real compass, saying he doesn't need it anymore. Boone, still tied up, hears Shannon yelling for help and the sounds of The Monster. He finally reaches the knife and cuts himself free. He finds Shannon tied to a tree and cuts her loose. They hide in a bamboo thicket as The Monster hovers outside. At the caves, Sayid tells Jack that Locke's compass is broken. In the jungle, Boone and Shannon start to head back to camp, with Shannon asking Boone why Locke tied them both up.

----

At the beach, Jack probes Locke about his boar hunting. Locke says that he thinks the boars have started to move away from the survivors' camp. In the jungle, Kate promises to keep Sun's secret. Sun tells her that Michael is the only other person who knows, and that she can't tell Jin now because she loves him. At the beach, Jin offers Hurley another urchin. Hurley tries to eat it, but throws up. Jack asks Charlie how he's doing after Claire's disapperance. The subject turns to Locke.
->'''Charlie:''' The guy's a freak of nature. Highly disturbed. Chances are he probably killed all his mates at the post office the day his mum forgot to put a cookie in his lunch tin. That was my first impression, anyway. And then he saved my life.
->'''Jack:''' So you trust him?
->'''Charlie:''' Trust him? No offense, mate, but if there's one person on this Island I would put my absolute faith in to save us all, it would be John Locke.

At the caves, Jin brings Hurley a fish he caught for him. Michael and Kate watch on, as Jin and Sun have a noticeably happier conversation than usual. Jack gives Kate some guava seeds for the garden. In the jungle, Shannon demands answers from Boone about why Locke tied them up. Boone tells her about the hatch, and that Locke tied them up because he wanted to tell her about it. Suddenly, The Monster starts uprooting trees right behind them. They run, but Shannon is snatched up just out of frame.

----

Boone finds Shannon's body by the creek. At night, he finds Locke and attacks him with his knife. Locke fends Boone off, and is impressed that he made it back.
->'''Boone:''' That thing killed my sister. It's your fault. You drug her out there.
->'''Locke:''' Your sister?
->'''Boone:''' Don't play dumb with me.
->'''Locke:''' Calm down.
->'''Boone:''' She died in my arms.
->'''Locke:''' [[WhamLine Why is there no blood on you?]]

Locke shows Boone that Shannon is alive and well, happily talking with Sayid. Boone realizes that the paste Locke put on his head was a hallucinogen.
->'''LOCKE:''' How did you feel? When she died?
->'''Boone:''' I felt -- I felt -- I felt relieved. I felt relieved.
->'''Locke:''' Yes. Time to let go. (he gets up and grabs his pack) Follow me.
