Filch calls Harry over to go to Umbridge's office (she hasn't moved into Dumbledore's office because it won't let her in). He's the only teacher who seems delighted to see Umbridge made headmistress, as she seems willing to introduce corporal punishment. Harry sits down with Umbridge and she demands he has a drink. He takes a cup of tea but secretly refuses to drink it. She asks him about the whereabouts of Dumbledore and Sirius Black and Harry claims he doesn't know. Umbridge says she will take Harry at his word but warns him that she and the Ministry are watching all communications in and out of Hogwarts, including all the fireplaces apart from her own.

Filch calls Harry over to go to Umbridge's office (she hasn't moved into Dumbledore's office because it won't let her in). He's the only teacher staff member who seems delighted to see Umbridge made headmistress, actually likes Umbridge, as she seems willing to introduce corporal punishment. Harry sits down with Umbridge and she demands he has a drink. He takes a cup of tea but secretly refuses to drink it. But is it just 'mischief'? When Snape comes by, James disarms him and uses various spells to trap Snape in front of a crowd of jeering onlookers. He and Sirius taunt Snape, cast various jinxes on him such as filling his mouth with soap and hoisting him in the air upside-down so that his pants show. Harry's mother, Lily, demands that he stop harassing Snape. James, who clearly fancies her, eventually relents...until she goes away, and then he goes back to bullying Snape. At that moment, the present day Snape hoists Harry out of the Pensieve. He throws Harry out his office, tells him to never come back and throws glass jars at him in violent rage. Harry runs away, but he is less shocked by Snape's reaction than he is at seeing his father behaving like the JerkJock that Snape always said he was.

He also has a conversation with Cho. Harry is furious with Marietta for betraying the group and, unlike Cho, not sorry that she has had her face disfigured. Apparently, Madam Pomfrey has not had any luc at removing the jinx. He again accidentally convinces her he is more interested in Hermione. He goes down to his Occlumency lesson with Snape, but they are interrupted by the appearance of Malfoy. He says that Montague has reappeared, stuck in a toilet and in a state of confusion. Snape goes away to help Montague, telling Harry to wait behind. Harry notices the Pensieve, where Snape is storing a memory that he doesn't want Harry to see. He decides to dive in and watch it.

[[TyrantTakesTheHelm Umbridge is installed as headteacher]] and she recruits [[LesCollaborateurs a squad of loyal Slytherins]] to help her. Fred and George discuss their plans to quit school with a final and dramatic rebellion against Umbridge. They mention that they stopped Montague, one her Slytherin supporters, from taking points away Gryffindor by [[ChekhovsGun forcing him into a Vanishing Cabinet]]. Exactly where they've sent him, they don't know.

Umbridge says she will take Harry at his word but warns him that she and the Ministry are watching all communications in and out of Hogwarts, including all the fireplaces apart from her own.

They are interrupted by an explosion. Umbridge rushes down, and Harry secretly follows to watch. Fred and George have set off a load of enchanted fireworks. The fireworks spend the rest of the day wreaking havoc around the school, with the other teachers leaving Umbridge to clean up the mess. Harry goes to bed that night and dreams about the Department of Mysteries. This time he goes through to not just the hall, but also a further two rooms. The second room has shelves after shelves of glass spheres. He spends much of the next day dreading that Snape will find out.

It's a memory of [=OWL=] exams at Hogwarts and what happened after. Harry spots Snape, his father, Sirius, Pettigrew and Lupin among the teenage students in the exam hall. The exams conclude and the students file out, many of them relaxing on the grounds. Harry decides to watch the Marauders, who are close enough to Snape so that they continue to appear in the memory. At first, Harry is quite delighted to see his father, Sirius and Lupin when they were young. James does come off as a bit arrogant at first. Pettigrew seems to hero-worship James and Sirius, while Lupin is friendly, good-natured but keeps his distance from some of their mischief.
