Hermione reads the ''Daily Prophet''. Apparently, Sirius Black has been sighted in London by a "reliable source". It seems most likely that Lucius Malfoy (who would have learned from Wormtail that Sirius is an Animagus). In addition, Order member Sturgis Podmore has been convicted for trying to get through a high-security door in the Ministry of Magic on the day before Harry returned to Hogwarts. Harry remembers that Sturgis was supposed to be escorting Harry to the station on that day, and that Moody was annoyed when he didn't turn up, suggesting he may not have been doing business for the Order. They wonder if he was lured into a trap. Harry takes part in Quidditch practice that evening. It's a rough start for Ron, who easily loses his confidence when the Slytherins taunt him.

Harry writes a letter to Sirius, mentioning that he has felt pain in his scar again. He goes to the Owlery early next morning, where he meets Cho. She is friendly towards him, believes his story and praises him for standing up to Umbridge. They are interrupted by Filch, who tries to intercept Harry's letter, claiming he had been tipped-off that he was ordering Dungbombs. Neither Harry and Cho can work out why this would have happened. They leave together, and Harry wonders if Cho might be reciprocating his feelings for her.

The next day, Ron gets a letter from his estranged brother Percy. Percy congratulates Ron on becoming a Prefect. He tells him to avoid associating himself with Harry and Dumbledore, saying that Harry is a dangerous and unbalanced person and that Dumbledore is a has-been. He tells Ron to be loyal to the Ministry and Umbridge. He says that Umbridge is going to change Hogwarts but is currently getting little help from other members of staff, but may "find this easier from next week", hinting at some further Ministry meddling that is about to come. Ron is utterly disgusted at what he has read and burns the letter. Harry tries to joke about it but is privately disturbed that someone that was once quite friendly to him is now describing him in such insulting terms.

Sirius then appears in the fire (via Floo Powder) to talk to them. They discuss Umbridge. Sirius has heard of her, she says she is prejudiced against part-humans and has pushed through some discriminatory laws against them in recent years. He is not surprised that Umbridge won't teach them practical magic, because Fudge does not want students trained in combat. Apparently he [[ProperlyParanoid fears Dumbledore might raise an army to take on the Ministry]]. He does not know what the further intervention is that Percy mentioned and won't say how Hagrid is getting on.
