Harry is too young to apparate, but Dumbledore can perform side-on apparation with him. Harry gets his first experience of apparating, and he doesn't like it one bit. They arrive in a village and head for the house of one of Dumbledore's friends, whom he wants to bring out of retirement. Harry asks a few questions along the way. Harry notices that his scar has not been prickling lately and he has stopped having dreams about Voldemort. Dumbledore suspects that Voldemort has been using Occlumency to stop Harry from seeing into his mind. Dumbledore says he is pleased to see Scrimgeour appointed Minister for Magic. If the rumours in the ''Daily Prophet'' are true, Dumbledore is clearly not prepared to discuss it. Dumbledore also explains that inferi are dead bodies that have been animated to do a dark wizard's bidding.

They arrive at the house. The place looks as though it has been trashed. Fearful of what might have happened, Dumbledore and Harry enter furtively and explore the wrecked room inside. Dumbledore then finds an armchair that turns out to be a fat old man in disguise. Dumbledore then introduces Horace Slughorn, a retired teacher that Dumbledore wants to bring back to Hogwarts. Slughorn says that the answer is still "no".

They settle down and have some drinks. Slughorn says his age is taking its toll on his health and stamina, although Dumbledore notes that he was quick to hide when they came. Dumbledore wonders if he is living in hiding from the Death Eaters. Slughorn at first denies it, and then reveals it's true. In fact, he has been moving from house to house for a year. While Dumbledore is out of the room, Slughorn chats with Harry. He talks about his favourite students, including Harry's mother. He often helped them get jobs after they left school, while they often gave him favours and presents in return. Harry is surprised to learn that Slughorn was a Slytherin himself, although he does not believe in blood prejudice.

Slughorn is still a bit fearful of returning for Hogwarts, believing that it would be declaring public allegiance to Dumbledore and the Order. Harry replies by noting that only one teacher has died lately (Quirrell, because he was in league with Voldemort) and that Dumbledore is the only wizard that Voldemort ever fears. Dumbledore returns from a suspiciously long toilet break and as they leave, Slughorn says he has changed his mind.

After they leave, Dumbledore explains that Slughorn never aspired to be powerful but enjoyed forming connections with influential ex-students. As a teacher, he will undoubtedly try to befriend Harry for this reason. They now apparate to the Weasley's house. They discuss Sirius and the prophecy. Dumbledore tells Harry that while he has been wise to keep the prophecy secret, he would suggest telling Ron and Hermione. Dumbledore also says that he wants to give Harry private lessons during the next school year. He has two more instructions to give: keep the Invisibility Cloak at all times and to not do anything risky at the Burrow.
