Harry decides to have a first stab at obtaining the memory at the end of a Potions lesson. They're doing the subject of antidotes. To Hermione's delight, this causes a problem for Harry, because the Half-Blood Prince's annotations won't be much use if they're having to create custom potions. Indeed, the Prince hasn't even written any helpful advice on the antidotes. Apart from at the end, when he writes "Just shove a bezoar down their throats." [[Recap/HarryPotterAndThePhilsophersStoneC8ThePotionsMaster As Snape told Harry in his very first Potions lesson]], a bezoar is a stone that can hold off most poisons. So Harry produces nothing but a bezoar to the end of class. Slughorn's reaction is to be rather amused by Harry's "sheer cheek". As the class clears, Harry attempts to ask Slughorn to give the missing memory. Slughorn rebuffs him.

The sixth years begin having regular Apparition lessons in the Great Hall (the magic prohibiting Apparition into Hogwarts has been relaxed). Harry ovehears an argument between Malfoy and Crabbe, as Crabbe is annoyed with having to do "lookout" work for a job that Malfoy won't explain. It's extremely difficult, and not a single student manages it in that lesson. Apparation lessons continue over the next few weeks, with few students making progress. Meanwhile, Harry starts looking for Malfoy on the Marauder's Map. He notices Malfoy keeps disappearing, but he's pretty sure Malfoy can't be heading out of the school grounds. Crabbe and Goyle are occasionally seen prowling the corridors.

Ron's birthday arrives and he spends a morning unwrapping his presents. After eating a lot of chocolates, he suddenly becomes infatuated with Romilda Vane, even though he doesn't actually know her. Harry realises that Ron ate [[Recap/HarryPotterAndTheHalfBloodPrinceC15TheUnbreakableVow the Chocolate Cauldrons that Romilda gave him]], and they're spiked with love potion. Harry decides to act quickly and take Ron to Slughorn. Slughorn gives Ron an antidote. He then shares round some of Madam Rosmerta's oak-matured mead to serve as a pick-me-up, which he had meant to give to Dumbledore for Christmas. Harry starts to wonder if he has another opportunity to coax the memory out of Slughorn. Ron drinks before the others can and suddenly starts choking and wretching. Realising Ron has been poisoned, Harry hurriedly reaches for a bezoar and shoves it down Ron's throat.
