Katie is being treated in St Mungo's Hospital. As Dumbledore explains when Harry arrives for his private lesson, Snape arrived and used his knowledge of Dark Magic to hold back the curse. Dumbledore also mentions that they will take steps to prevent Mundungus from stealing from Grimmauld Place again. He doesn't want to discuss Harry's suspicions about Malfoy, and instead they turn to their lesson.

Dumbledore explains that after becoming pregnant and being abandoned by her husband, Merope Gaunt was left alone in London, struggling to survive. She sold Slytherin's locket to Borgin and Burkes for a fraction of a percentage of what it was worth. Harry wonders why Merope didn't use magic to help herself. Dumbledore reckons that being abandoned by Riddle damaged her so much that she was unable to do magic again. Dumbledore now invites Harry to enter the Pensieve to visit one of his own memories.

A younger Dumbledore arrives at an orphanage and meets with the matron, Mrs Cole. He has come to see the young Tom Riddle and enrol him at Hogwarts. She explains that she was there when Merope arrived, gave birth to a son and then died in childbirth. She says that the young Tom is "odd". She wonders if he has been bullying the other orphans. Though she has never been able to catch him in wrongdoing, suspicious accidents have happened around orphans that he doesn't like. She mentions for instance that [[ChekhovsGun he took two other orphans]] into a cave with him during a trip to the seaside, and [[NoodleIncident something happened there]] that left them traumatised.

The younger Dumbledore then goes to visit Tom. He is a rather CreepyChild who at first is hostile, thinking he's about to be taken to an asylum. He is then delighted to find out that he is a wizard and boasts of what he can do. He relishes being able to hurt those who get on the wrong side of him and looks forward to learning to do magic. The young Dumbledore realises that Tom is hiding something in his wardrobe. It turns out to be a mix of small toys he stole from other orphans. He tells Tom to give them back to their rightful owners, and the boy impassively agrees. Tom seems to dislike his name and he insists on going to Diagon Alley to buy school stuff on his own.

Harry and the present-day Dumbledore now leave the Pensieve. Dumbledore notes that like the adult Voldemort, the young Tom was a secretive loner with obvious instincts for cruelty and domination, as well as a desire to be considered special. He had powers which were unusually well-developed and was using them to bully the other orphans. He also tells Harry to note how the young Tom collected the toys as souvenirs for his acts of bullying. On the way out, Harry notices that [[Recap/HarryPotterAndTheHalfBloodPrinceC10TheHouseOfGaunt Marvolo Gaunt's ring]] has gone.
