When he comes back, they revive Winky. Winky denies conjuring the Dark Mark. The Trio say it couldn't have been Winky, as they heard a human voice casting it. Amos uses a spell called [[ChekhovsGun "''Priori Incantato''" to show that it was Harry's wand that was used to cast it. But it doesn't seem likely that Mr Crouch would have let his house elf learn Dark Magic, especially as he seems to have a reputation for being staunchly opposed to it. Arthur asks her where she found the wand and she says she found it in the trees, but won't admit to seeing the person who did it. Mr Crouch tells Amos that while in ordinary circumstances, she would be taken into Amos's department for questioning, he would rather deal with her alone. He tells Winky that he disobeyed his orders for her to stay in the tent and that she will be dismissed. Winky sobs in protest, Hermione tries to stand up from her. As they leave, she continues to note how unreasonably Winky has been treated.

A crowd of hooded wizards are barging through the campsite, destroying tents and levitating Mr Roberts and his family. Ministry wizards are venturing out to stop them, but are hesitating out of fear the Muggles will be sent crashing to the ground. Bystanders are fleeing into the woods. Harry, Ron and Hermione follow. They pass quite a few people: Draco Malfoy, who is smirking at the scene, and a group of teenagers that Hermione says probably comes from the [[ChekhovsGun Beauxbatons]] magic school in France. There's Winky, who is trying to flee the scene but [[ChekhovsGun seems to be fighting against some sort of force]]. Harry, who has just realised that he's lost his wand, suspects that this is because she is doing something that goings against her master's permission. They also pass some goblins who are clutching some bags of gold, and Mr Bagman, who seems to be in a panicky state.

They hear someone move in the words, then shout what sounds like an incantation. Magic stars rise into the air, taking the form of a skull with a serpent coming out of its mouth. Hermione explains it's the Dark Mark, Voldemort's logo. Ministry wizards appear, and the Trio duck as Stunning spells are sent flying through the woods. The group of wizards include Arthur, Mr Crouch and Amos Diggory. Mr Crouch first suspects that it was they who cast the Dark Mark, but the other Ministry wizards don't believe it and they search the forest further. To Mr Crouch's shock, they bring back Winky, who turns out to be his own house elf. She's carrying a wand and it's Harry's. As Bagman arrives, Mr Crouch searches the forest further.

They return to the campsite and reunite with everyone back in a tent. Several tents are ruined and people are still shaken. Arthur explains that the Dark Mark has not been seen for 13 years. During Voldemort's earlier reign of terror, it was often cast into the sky above any house or place where they had committed murder. The crowd of hooded wizards were Death Eaters (supporters of Voldemort). Paradoxically, the Dark Mark caused them to Disapparate and escape (so none were caught). Arthur suspects this is because the Death Eaters who avoided Azkaban would be fearful if Voldemort returned and found out that they had deserted him. No-one is sure whether the Dark Mark was cast to show support for the Death Eaters or to scare them away. As Arthur notes though, only Death Eaters were ever taught to cast it.
