Harry races to Dumbledore's office. He walks in on a meeting between Dumbledore, Fudge and Moody. Dumbledore is suggesting that the disappearances of Bertha Jorkins and Crouch are linked, but Fudge denies this is possible. They go off to investigate the place where Crouch disappeared, with Dumbledore telling Harry to wait in his office. While there, Harry notices Dumbledore's Pensieve, a shiny bowl of magical liquid. He investigates it and accidentally touches the liquid. He is then sucked into a PensieveFlashback of several trials that Dumbledore witnessed after Voldemort's downfall, which are presided over by Mr Crouch.

The third trial is for a group of four Death Eaters: Bellatrix Lestrange, her husband Rodolphus, his brother Rabastan and Bartemius Crouch Jr. They are on trial for torturing the Aurors Frank and Alice Longbottom. Bellatrix is defiant in her support for Voldemort, while Crouch Jr. is terrified and protests his innocence to his father. Crouch Sr. angrily tells him that “I have no son!” A furious Wizengamot sends them to Azkaban. At this point, the present-day Dumbledore hoists Harry out of the Pensieve.

Harry now tells Dumbledore about his dream. He wonders why his scar is prickling. Dumbledore suspects that the failed curse created a connection between Harry and Voldemort, that causes his scar to prickle when Voldemort is close by or feeling strong emotion. Harry asks if the dream was real and whether Voldemort is coming back to power. Dumbledore is not sure. Neither are sure why Voldemort could have used a wand if he apparently does not have a body. Dumbledore notes that there have been some odd disappearances lately (Bertha Jorkins, Mr Crouch and a Muggle, Frank Bryce) just as there were during Voldemort's original rise to power. Jorkins and Bryce vanished in locations that were connected to Voldemort.

He investigates it and accidentally touches the liquid. He is then sucked into a PensieveFlashback of several trials that Dumbledore witnessed after Voldemort's downfall, which are presided over by Mr Crouch.

The first trial is for Karkaroff, a captured Death Eater. He is offered to be released from Azkaban in return for giving the names of other Death Eaters. Most of those he names have already been captured. But he does strike gold when he reveals that Augustus Rookwood, an employee of the Ministry, was actually a spy for Voldemort. He also names Severus Snape. Dumbledore stands up and vouches for Snape, saying that he was a Death Eater who had a HeelFaceTurn shortly before Voldemort's downfall.

The second trial is for Ludo Bagman, then a prime Quidditch player. He is accused of passing information to Rookwood. Bagman says he didn't know that Rookwood was a spy. The Wizengamot quickly acquit him.

Finally, he answers some questions about the Pensieve memories. The tortured Aurors were indeed Neville's parents. They were tortured into madness and now live permanently in St Mungo's Hospital, which is why Neville lives with his grandmother. He asks Harry to keep this private for now. He is not truly sure if Crouch Jr. was guilty. Bagman and Snape have not been accused of Death Eater activity since. Harry asks why Dumbledore believed that Snape changed his ways and Dumbledore says this is a private matter.
