The students, including the visitors, file into the Great Hall for a welcome feast. Two of the visiting students seemed to be drawing attention. There's Viktor Krum, for one. Then there's a girl from Beauxbatons who seems to have an ability to charm boys, especially Ron. He suspects the girl is a Veela. After the feast is over, Dumbledore gives a welcoming speech. He introduces [[Recap/HarryPotterAndTheGobletOfFireC7BagmanAndCrouch Bagman and Crouch]] to the school -- they have been helping the Ministry organise the tournament. Filch brings a "casket" which apparently contains an object of importance.

Dumbledore explains that the Triwizard Tournament has three rounds, each one a dangerous test of magical ability, courage and problem-solving. The three champions will be chosen by an "impartial selector". The casket is opened to reveal it: the Goblet of Fire. Students who are over the age of 17 can enter, but he warns them that they will be magically bound to participate if they are selected. The Goblet of Fire will be placed in the Entrance Hall, surrounded by an Age Line to keep underage entrants from getting to it. Those who do enter must write their name on a slip of paper and place it in the Goblet of Fire before the evening of the next day. As they had out, Fred and George discuss using an Aging Potion to get past the Age Line, while Karkaroff is rather angered to discover Moody is working at the school.

The next day, the Weasley twins attempt their plan. At first, it seems to work, as they get across the Age Line. Only that they're promptly sent flying out of it, landing on the floor and finding that they've grown white beards. After they head off to the hospital wing, Harry and his friends discuss who might be Hogwarts' champion. He then goes with Ron and Hermione to visit Hagrid. Hagrid has done something strange -- he's ''tried'' to dress up formally and clean up nicely, including slicking his hair with axle grease. It hasn't really worked. As he goes out to walk up to the castle with Madame Maxime, they realise he must fancy her.

They come into the Great Hall for the ceremony in which the Champions are chosen. The Goblet of Fire begins spitting out the names of the Three Champions. Unsurprisingly, Viktor Krum is chosen to represent Durmstrang. The girl chosen to represent Beauxbatons is Fleur Delacour, the same girl that Ron suspected earlier to be a Veela. Finally, the Hogwarts Champion is chosen. It's Cedric Diggory of Hufflepuff, who was one of the favourites. Except it's not finally. As the Champions disappear into a side room, the Goblet of Fire comes back to life and spits out a fourth name: "''Harry Potter''".
