Harry and his friends arrive at Hogwarts, dodging water bombs from Peeves and wondering who the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher will be. The Sorting Hat introduces itself with a song, although it's different to [[Recap/HarryPotterAndThePhilosophersStoneC7TheSortingHat one Harry last heard]] (apparently, it makes up a new one each year). The new students are then sorted, with Colin Creevey's younger brother Dennis joining him in Gryffindor.

As the feast begins, Nearly Headless Nick mentions that Peeves earlier caused a disturbance at the kitchens and scared the house-elves. That shocks Hermione, who didn't realise that there were house-elves in Hogwarts. As Nick explains, there are hundreds in servitude to the school, and students almost never see them because they only time they come out of the kitchens is to do cleaning at night. Although Nick and Ron insist that the house-elves have HappinessInSlavery, Hermione is so angry to learn that they have unpaid work that she refuses to eat another bite.

Meanwhile, Dumbledore gives his welcome speech. The Quidditch games will be cancelled in favour of another event. Before he can explain what this is, they are interrupted by the arrival of Mad-Eye Moody. He is a battle-scared ex-Auror who has a giant magical eye alongside a normal one. Dumbledore introduces him as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. He then explains that the Triwizard Tournament will be revived this year.

The Triwizard Tournament took place over many previous centuries. Three champions, one each from the wizarding schools of Hogwarts, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang, took part in some dangerous magical challenges. The tournament was discontinued after the "death toll" grew too high, but is how about to be reinstated. Only students aged 17 years and above will be allowed to compete, to the annoyance of Fred and George. Delegations from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang will arrive the following month. As they return to Gryffindor Tower, Hermione is still angry that the school employs slave labour, while Harry and Ron dream of being able to take part in the tournament.
