One afternoon a few weeks later, Harry comes in from Quidditch practice drenched and covered in mud. He meets Nearly Headless Nick, who is looking equally dejected. Then Mrs Norris appears. Nick tells him to flee, warning him that Filch is in a bad mood and he does not want to be caught spreading mud around the castle. Too late, Filch appears. Harry is forced to go into Filch's office. As Filch contemplates how to punish Harry, there is a gigantic crash from upstairs. Filch runs out upstairs to investigate what has happened.

While Filch is gone, Harry discovers Filch has been sent an advert for a "Kwikspell Course", a training course for incompetent adult wizards. Filch returns, having discovered that the crash was caused by Peeves [[ChekhovsGun wrecking a "vanishing cabinet"]]. When he realises Harry has read his Kwikspell letter, he lets Harry off in return for not telling the school about it. Harry meets Nick again, who reveals that he persuaded Peeves to destroy the cabinet to get Harry out. In return, he persuades Harry to come to his "Deathday Party" (the anniversary of his death) in place of the Halloween feast.

Harry regrets his promise to attend the Deathday Party, but he goes with Ron and Hermione into the cold dungeon where it takes place. They are introduced to several ghosts present, including Moaning Myrtle, a mopey ghost of a student who haunts a disused girl's toilet. The ghosts have produced with a cake that reveals the timescale of the books, an orchestra who produces an ear-splitting high-pitched wail and taste food (which has to be rotten to have a taste they can vaguely sense). It is all rather too much for the trio, and they turn to leave.

Suddenly, Harry hears the same sinister voice he heard [[Recap/HarryPotterAndTheChamberOfSecretsC7MudbloodsAndMurmurs in the previous chapters]]. He follows it, racing up several floors in the castle. Ron and Hermione follow, having no idea what Harry was talking about. It takes them to a corridor that is flooded with water. A message has been daubed on the walls:

[[TitleDrop THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS]] HAS BEEN OPENED
ENEMIES OF THE HEIR BEWARE

Next to it is Mrs Norris, who has been frozen like a board. They try to back away but a crowd of students arrive. Malfoy laughs at the writing, saying "You'll be next, Mudbloods!"
