* LoveAtFirstSight: Beth towards "Mr. Vernet". It's implied that her subconscious recognized him as Sherlock Holmes, which subverts this trope with LoveBeforeFirstSight, and ''Fanfic/ChildrenOfTime''!Holmes's voice and appearance is based on JeremyBrett, anyway.

* StrangeGirl: Most of the teens consider Beth to be this, largely because she's an AcademicAthlete and one to two years ahead everyone else her age.

!!This Episode Provides Examples of:

* AcademicAthlete: Beth describes herself as smart in her opening narration, and a couple of paragraphs later, the narrative calls her and the bully she's fighting with "athletes". She does turn out to be good at sports and equally good in the classroom, impressing Watson and human!Doctor. BadassBookworm in the making.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Unlike the original two-parter, this episode looks at the PowerTrio through the eyes of a fifteen-year-old girl.
* AdultFear: So... two kids are murdered by possession, just as in the original... and then you have those same two kids with guns on a high school campus. (Note that "Human Nature"/"Family of Blood" had nothing to do with American school issues, and that ''this'' story was based on the original two-parter.)
* AllUpToYou: It all boils down to one teenage girl with a soul in a fob watch.
* AndNowForSomethingCompletelyDifferent
* AscendedFangirl: Beth, oh so much--and it's [[ChekhovsGunman very important later on]].
* BadassBoast: "I've seen the Doctor. I've seen you with him, you and Dr. Watson. The three of you... You're like... fire... and ice... and everything terrible and wonderful about light and darkness. And the Doctor... He's ancient -- I've seen that. Burning at the centre of time. Able to see the turn of the universe."
* BavarianFireDrill: Messrs. Vernet, Walker, and Smith are just three teachers from the UK, nothing to worry about...
* BreakTheCutie: You thought that [[spoiler:removing the romance from the story would make it less heartrending?]] You would be wrong. Oh, so wrong...
* CanonImmigrant: Beth.
* CassandraTruth: Beth and John Smith trying to explain things to the police. It... [[{{Understatment}} doesn't go over well.]]
* ChangedMyJumper: Played with. Holmes and Watson are undercover, and Holmes is the consummate professional at undercover work. They're just two British gents who happen to be high school teachers... except that [[BrainyBrunette Beth]] doesn't buy Holmes's unchanged ''accent''.
* CoolTeacher: So... John H. Watson, M.D. is an English teacher, and Sherlock Holmes is a fencing instructor. Oh ''yes''.
* CreepyChild: Daughter of Mine, who possesses the body of ''Beth's best friend''.
* DreamingTheTruth: And it gives Watson a moment of alarm.
* ExtyYearsFromNow: The TARDIS lands in Midwestern America, 2093.
* FirstLove: If you don't quickly cotton on to the fact that Holmes is this for Beth, you're not paying attention. (To be fair, it's not certain ''he'' is, either.)
* FirstNameBasis: Beth convinces Holmes to do this with her.
* GangOfBullies: Rob and his friends are implied to be Beth's continual adversaries.
* HiddenDepths: Although part of the story from Beth's [=POV=] is uncovering the HiddenDepths in her new teachers, the story from ''Holmes's'' [=POV=] is partly about seeing the HiddenDepths in ''Beth''.
** Fifteen-year-old [[spoiler:stuns a police officer]] and takes control of the car. ''Oh'' yeah.
* HighSchool: Just your average American high school, right?
* HotForTeacher: See FirstLove, above.
* HowWeGotHere
* IJustWantToBeNormal
* InfantImmortality: Averted.
* JumpedAtTheCall[=/=]TheCallPutMeOnHold: Beth is all set for adventure (it's in her blood), and the Doctor tells her "not yet". [[spoiler:She'll have to wait two more years in her own timeline, which is a couple of months for the Doctor and Holmes and over a year for Watson.]]
* KarmicDeath: Son of Mine is the one member of the family who shoots someone ''on''screen. [[spoiler:Watson ends up having to shoot him to keep him from taking the watch from Beth.]]
* KidHero: Need we really say?
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Of a sort, and consensual:
-->'''Beth:''' I'm the only one who can't see her. The Doctor pushed at little places in my mind so that I would never see [[SealedEvilInACan the girl in the mirror]], [[TearJerker the girl who was once my best friend]].
* LetsGetDangerous: Beth and Holmes.
* MidSeasonTwist: This isn't the first time we've had a heroine in the season, but it is the first time that an episode happens largely from said heroine's [=POV=]. That being said, this episode is the one that's the game-changer, [[spoiler:because it introduces Beth who, two episodes later, becomes one of the main characters.]]
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Watson, oh so very much, as settled within the first ten paragraphs of the story.
* SealedGoodInACan
* SecretKeeper: Beth for the Doctor, in a sort of [[Literature/TheLordOfTheRings Frodo Baggins]] way.
* StrangeGirl: Most of the teens consider Beth to be this, largely because she's an AcademicAthlete and one to two years ahead everyone else her age.
* TeensAreMonsters
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Beth and Chloe, mildly.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: The Doctor for the school.
* YouAreNotReady: The reason the Doctor tells Beth "not yet", calling her "too young".
* YouHaveToBelieveMe: Beth when trying to convince Sherlock to trust her.
