Ichigo is looking forward to at least a ''bit'' of a break after the whole business with Aizen betraying Soul Society, but his hopes are dashed as three mysterious individuals kidnap his friends and play strange games with them. The three turn out to be Mod Souls created by Urahara, and their games are a very obtuse method of training Ichigo for his next threat. Not Aizen, but a group called the Bount.
Bount are an artificially-created race that look like humans, but have the ability to consume souls like hollows to get power and stay eternally youthful (which gives them zanpakuto-like weapons called 'dolls'). They also have a massive grudge against the Shinigami because the Shinigami tried to wipe them all out in the past for the whole "eating souls" thing. And to gain enough power to get their revenge, they've decided to invade Karakura Town to use a unique doll to sap the souls of the inhabitants (who just can't get a break), and kidnapping Uryu Ishida to provide them a way into Soul Society. Ichigo and his other friends? Target practice, much to Ichigo's chagrin.
This part of the plan succeeds, but once they're actually in Soul Society, things go pear-shaped. The Bount have underestimated their opponents, which puts a bit of a damper on the whole 'counter-genocide' plan. The Bount are all killed in a series of fights with the named Shinigami, with their leader, Jin Kariya, falling in a final battle against Ichigo. The SoleSurvivor is Kariya's right-hand man, Go Koga, who has been saved by the Bounts' creator, Ran Tao. He accepts the extinction of the Bount race and tells her his story.
