* ContrivedCoincidence: Zhao receives word of his promotion to Admiral just as he's trying to recruit the Yu-Yan Archers, allowing him to make his request an order. How lucky can a guy get? Played with though, as there's no established reason why the original commanding officer of the archers should have outranked Zhao. The writers could have given Zhao the authority from the beginning, simply by making the original CO someone lower ranked than Zhao. They created a contrived problem, and moments later presented a contrived solution.

* DangerouslyGenreSavvy:
** The guards at Aang's door hear one of their own being neutralized. They go to investigate... leaving one at the door. When they're both taken out, the last one instantly tries to sound the alarm instead of fighting the Spirit.
** Zhao doesn't want Aang killed because the Avatar would simply resurrect and the Fire Nation would have to hunt him down all over again.

* ShoutOut: Several to ''PrincessMononoke'', [[spoiler: including a masked intruder entering a fort, fighting it's inhabitants and shot down and unmasked by a projectile straight to the face (a bullet in the film, an arrow in this episode). The shots in which San and Zuko are unmasked are even similar]].
