* He has claimed that if not for Kratos, ''he'' would be the God of War. After a sound defeat at Kratos's blades, Guan Yu went into hiding, allowing his 'incarnations' Kan'u and Aisha to look for a good substitute position. Well, one could do worse than being the God of Beards.
** Also regarding his titles, in [[VideoGame/DynastyWarriors one famous portrayal of him]], he's mainly associated with [[InstantAwesomeJustAddDragons divine dragons]] for the naming of his weapons; ranging from the Qinglong/Seiryuu (Azure Dragon), his brother [[Pantheon/MannersOfAuthority Liu Bei]]'s motif for the Huanglong/Kouryuu (Yellow Dragon), and even the Shenlong/Shinryuu (God/Divine Dragon). It is said that Chinese rulers in the past are often associated with Eastern dragons, so this may be a nod to his other sure-fire title as "Guandi/Kantei" (Emperor Guan).
*** Some people also name him "Guangong/Kankou" (Duke Guan), but to some it sounds like they're calling him [[CoolOldGuy "Ol' Guan"]] instead. Needless to say, Guan Yu himself is awkward about this.
*** However in regards to the yanyuedao/engetsutou (weir moon blade) itself, Guan Yu himself states that historically, he never even touched the kind of weapon he was associated with (it was developed around the very late Song Dynasty). That was just a myth formed from his more popular novel-portrayal, and he states he clearly remembered using an actual halberd instead.
*** It would also seem regarding his motif with the aforementioned Shenlong, it seems another [[Franchise/DragonBall Shenlong himself]] ([[ItIsPronouncedTroPay albeit with his name often mispronounced as "Sheh-n-rah-n"]]) seems to have taken a liking to him, which pretty much has given Guan Yu slight interest in the Dragon Balls.

** However, Guan Yu states that he did remember famously beheading Hua Xiong in the novel once...even if Sun Jian was the one who historically took him down. As he says: "Blame the novel's events on Lord Yuan Shu, if you will. Even IF he did it just to make sure Lord Sun Wentai was loyal to their cause."
* Why ''did'' he grow a beard? Also to mention, how is his skin so damn red like a matured da'te as they say?
** For the former, it's just a regulation thing, so he doesn't mind; at least it was consistent to every one of his other selves that he often mysteriously sees on altars in Chinese shops to this day. Guan Yu tries his best to hide his face because of this whenever he goes out somewhere to eat.

*** Sadly, some gods have commented on his children's blind visions on continually spouting on about how great their father is. Guan Yu himself is disturbed by this matter and is thinking hard about how to make them pursue their own visions.

* He's surprisingly more...civil when people mentioned about his blunders in Fan Castle and perhaps how in some sources he was in fact a mediocre general. He admitted that he could have handled the situation better like treating his subordinates better and not underestimating both Lu Meng and Lu Xun ([[KnightTemplarParent getting Yinping to marry another person he doesn't approve is still a big no-no, though]]) and above all, getting his pride over the head so much was considered [[MyGreatestFailure his greatest failure]], that he thinks he deserved such karmic payback (he also mentions his historical-self was even more of an asshat and was a massive sucker for flattery); now he's not very vocal about himself and feels most of his current deeds are a bit empty.
** Apparently after [[WhatTheHellHero he was called out about the heads he cut off]], [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone he had an epiphany]] and decided to atone for that sin by protecting villages from the cruel and selfish on demand, even as just a spirit. Continued services as such and people actually putting their faith on him allowed him to get redeemed and eventually ascended as the Saint of War.
*** He's been apologizing to Huang Zhong and Ma Chao as of lately, since he was easily offended by them via his historical-self as they had possible blows dealt to his bloated ego. However, he doubts he can make amends with his prior subordinates Shi Ren (AKA Fu Shiren) and Mi Fang, especially their historical-counterparts due to his poor leadership of them (but at the same time historical Mi Fang DID screw up one job of his). At least Huang Zhong was civil about it and reminds him that no one is perfect, not even when there's some hyperbolizing, while he got a letter from Ma Chao who hasn't ascended, basically telling him that for all of Guan's historical self's fault, he would still come off a little better than Ma Chao's, who was in fact a ruthless monster or sorts... Even Houyi also assured him that he had a similar life about ending up like an asshole.[[note]]Ma Chao also mentioned in that letter, "Remember that time your historical self said my historical self needed to prove himself before joining the Five Tigers that Zhuge Liang's historical self compared him to yours? Well, [[JerkassHasAPoint even he's got a point]] when you realize mine's own records..."[[/note]]
*** He's also been apologizing to both Sun Quan and Lu Meng as well, especially the former since historically at Fan Castle, Guan Yu had to plunder his supplies at a nearby area in order to feed his new recruits. Historical Sun Quan was understandably pissed off, which built up to Guan Yu's defeat and death, though the current Sun Quan is shrugging along with both him and Sun Ce saying "things just went very wrong during those times. It happens."
*** After a bit of research on that, Naoki theorized that this whole historical version of Guan Yu [[VideoGame/{{Persona 4}} might be spotted at the Midnight Channel... as Guan Yu's Shadow.]] After confirming this, there's one thing that ran to his mind:

After a bit of research on that, Naoki theorized that this whole historical version of Guan Yu [[VideoGame/{{Persona 4}} might be spotted at the Midnight Channel... as Guan Yu's Shadow.]] After confirming this, there's one thing that ran to his mind:

* One of his mortal friends is none other than Wei's Zhang Liao. However, Guan Yu prefers that no one mentions about [[WebComic/SanThreeKingdomsComic how he's gay for him and calls him "Prince Wenyuan" lovingly.]] They are not like that, even if they have high respects to each other. Both of them in their most [[VideoGame/DynastyWarriors popular portrayals]] even have the same naming motif for their weapons in the Asian scripts, only Zhang Liao wields the more practical gouliandao/kourentou (hook sickle blade), since Guan Yu's iconic yanyuedao/engetsutou (weir moon blade) is said to be too heavy to wield.
** Sadly, while Zhang Liao himself has switched to dual hand-axes, Guan Yu hopes for the day he'll take up his gouliandao again.
*** He also shows the same towards Xu Huang, even though Guan Yu and him point out that the historical Xu Huang was a workaholic introvert (OddFriendship much?). One could say that Guan Yunchang could start his own PowerTrio with both Zhang Wenyuan and Xu Gongming one day apart from his brothers. Only time will tell when the two of them will ascend next to Guan Yu.
*** He's also recently learned that a playable portrayal of Zhou Cang shall soon join him, even if that one guy who carried around his weir moon blade all the time was entirely fictional.
* Guan Yu apparently keeps a copy of the famous Chunqiu Zuoshi AKA Zuo Chuan (Zuo Propagate), and they say it's his favorite book to read and study. However, the same can't really be said for his historical-self however, due to his massive jerkass nature and the fact that him reading the book in the first place may be a myth.
** Lu Meng/Lu Ziming however, has stated that in this new age "where historical-selves don't have to plague the land", he would be glad to be Guan Yunchang's study partner. Meanwhile, Xiahou Dun is telling him to brush up on both his skills and spirit to make sure nothing weighs him down in their upcoming honest fight. Ironically, Guan Yu also laments that his historical self, unlike historical Zhang Fei, didn't like to be around scholars.
*** "And yes, my ghost haunting Lu Meng to his death was also a myth.....I mean, a great man like him didn't deserve to die like that, except for Pan Zhang of course."
* Also points out to some style name-enthusiasts that he has had two style names; his first one was "Changsheng", while the second one that's been milked by all of his media portrayals so far is "Yunchang". To this day, Guan Yu himself doesn't know whether he actually did change his style name, or the confusion being the result of some messed up texts (via writing the characters for his style name wrong).
** Also in some circles, especially in [[VideoGame/DynastyWarriors Japanese]] his title of "God of War" may or may not be read as the "Junshen/Gunshin", literally translated as the "Army God".

to:

** As it turned out, he received reports that there was a misinformed realm that believed the reverse of that novel and almost changed the face of perception (that his historical self is horrible without any redeeming qualities). Guan Yu wanted to make sure that the misinformation end as quick as possible.

* Another notable aspect of Guan Yu? The Chinese people like giving him [[RedBaron very big and intimidating titles]]. In 1614, the Wanli Emperor bestowed on Guan Yu the title "Holy Emperor Guan, the Great God Who Subdues Demons in the Three Worlds and Whose Awe Spreads Far and Moves Heaven". During the Qing dynasty, the Shunzhi Emperor gave Guan Yu the title of "Guan, the Loyal and Righteous God of War, the Holy Great Deity" in 1644. This title was expanded to [[TryToFitThatOnABusinessCard "Guan the Holy Great Deity; God of War Manifesting Benevolence, Bravery and Prestige; Protector of the Country and Defender of the People; Prow and Honest Supporter of Peace and Reconciliation; Promoter of Morality, Loyalty and Righteousness"]], a total of 24 Chinese characters, by the mid-19th century. Guan Yu himself wishes he could just stick to one or just a few small titles.....
* Guan Yu himself, after realizing how much both the historical and novel version of his sworn brother-in-law Sun Quan is as crazy of a drunkard like the novel version of Zhang Fei, is starting to fear the day they get together.
** Also, [[VideoGame/{{Kessen}} via one other version of himself]], he's not fond of [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes frogs]]. A drunken Zhang Fei tossed one in his face once.
