In the 1960s there really was no other band like Music/VelvetUnderground. They scared a lot of people away with their music, but also with their haunting stage image: CoolShades, everybody dressed in black and lighting that made them perform mostly in shadows while weird images from Creator/AndyWarhol's films were projected on the screen behind them. But, of course, it all started with their music:

!! Examples:

* "Venus In Furs", the first ObligatoryBondageSong in rock history.
--> ''Now blééééééééééééééééd for me!''

* "The Murder Mystery": a creepy song where the band members all talk together at the same time.

* "The Murder Mystery": a creepy song where the band members all talk together at the same time. \n The refrain is sang by Moe Tucker, whose childlike high voice provides an eerie atmosphere to an already unnerving song. What makes the song particularly stand out is the fact that it's the only AvantGardeMusic on this otherwise quite conventional record.

** If you need to be scared of Music/LouReed, look no further than ''White Light/White Heat''. "The Gift" wherein likeable hero Waldo mails himself to his long-distance girlfriend out of loneliness and fear that she might be cheating on him (fears which are proven right), when he gets there his girlfriend and her friend can't open the box he is in, so they get the cutter... Also Lady Godiva getting a lobotomy, yeah.
** Music/{{Beck}} did a cover, complete with trippin' video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLWVvBegDDI AND, left to their own devices, his backup band turned the nightmare UpToEleven! [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUnFShaG47E]]
* "Black Angel's Death Song", "Lady Godiva's Operation", "The Murder Mystery", and so forth.
