* Late in the game, you finally gain access to the storage where Itsuki is being held. [[spoiler:Upon entering, you see his lifeless body hanging from a noose. Inspecting the window from the inside of his cell, you'll see that it's been rusted shut and not been used in ages.]]

* The game ramped up the BodyHorror and {{Gorn}} of the series. Most of the Mikos you meet have had their [[EyeScream eyes slashed out]], one ghost has glass shards stuck in his back after he hung himself and crashed into the window below and he jumps through the window, when you first encounter him. And [[spoiler:Fuyuhi Himino]] was forced to [[PsyschicAssistedSuicide cut her own throat]].

* During the first flashback of the Looming Man killing the Mikos, there's a [[SarcasmMode lovely]] close-up of one of the Mikos, whose mouth was sliced open on one side and a large wound around her eye.

* Lord Himuro. He's a sadistic samurai donning the Hannya Mask, who was driven insane by the Calamity and proceeded to slaughter and behead everyone, finally committing suicide. And fighting him is just as horrifying, with his soulless eyes; the eery Hannya mask on his face; the four monks he sends after you and his way of attacking: unlike most ghosts, he doesn't try to grab the you. He'll just cut you into ribbons with his katana.

* Tall Woman. A gigantic, freakishly thin women with creepily elongated arms and a perpetual SlasherSmile. And there is ''no'' information on how or why she came to the mountain. She is based off of the Japanese legend of [[http://japuttoglobal.blogspot.de/2012/01/hachishakusama.html the Eight-Feet-Tall Lady]].
** The Tall Woman also says "You'd better get used to me". Meaning that she is ''actively stalking you'', compared to the other ghosts who simply react to you. She is legitimately malevolent, unlike the other ghosts.

* The entire series, but especially the first game. The ghosts are more than enough to provide endless nightmares, but then there's the audio tapes, and the very concept of the Rope Maiden...[[spoiler:who is tied down to a stone altar by her wrists, ankles, and neck, and then savagely torn apart in order to maintain the seal on the Hellmouth under the mansion.]]
** Just read the game cover of the first game: "BASED ON A TRUE STORY". The mansion in the game is based off of an actual mansion in Japan that is supposed to be haunted.
** The audio tapes are more unsettling than anything else, mostly because of the robotic-sounding voices.
** Broken Neck Woman, who haunts the mansion by floating ''backwards'', but her head flops over and she stares at you upside-down.
*** Crawling Girl, who was [[spoiler:pulled under the tatami and beneath the house by the Long-Armed Man, where he strangled her to death]]. Her ghost now crawls around on the floor of the Doll Room.
*** Girl in the Well, [[spoiler:another one of the Long-Armed Man's victims, was pulled into a large stone well and drowned.]] One half of her body is horribly disfigured by being dragged against the stones.
*** Boy Hiding, [[spoiler:the third victim of the Long-Armed Man, was pulled into the grandfather clock and strangled]].
*** The Long-Armed Man is freakishly mutated, shambling around in a crouched position and then suddenly rearing up just as he attacks.
*** Blinded Demon was [[spoiler:a sacrificial maiden who had a demon mask placed upon her. The mask was fitted with [[EyeScream large iron spikes through the eyes]], which were driven into the maiden's eyes by force.]] Now she roams the mansion screaming "[[EyeScream My eyes! My eyes!]]" while bleeding from the sockets.
*** Additionally, scores of visitors and inhabitants of Himuro Mansion, ''all'' of which suffered horrible, gruesome deaths at the hands of the master of the manor, even the children.
*** '''Lord Himuro'''. Arguably TheDragon to Kirie, he is a sadistic samurai who donns a Hannya mask and [[spoiler:is forced to sacrifice people in order to keep a nearby portal to the underworld firmly closed off to demons. After the breaking of the seal, he slaughtered and beheaded everyone.]] The fight is just as horrifying, with his soulless eyes, the eerily-grinning Hannya mask, the four monk heads he sends at you occasionally, and instead of trying to grab at you like the other ghosts, he tries slashing you to ribbons with his katana.
* There's one scene at the beginning of Fatal Frame II where Mio is standing in front of Mayu, and you can only see Mio in the shot. Someone puts their hand on Mio's shoulder, and while innocuous enough, you just see Mayu walk past her. [[spoiler:The hand is still there.]]
** You can find a figure wrapped up in blankets sitting ''upright''. Mio will wonder if it's a doll, but after you inspect it and walk away, you'll hear a distorted voice say "Stay with me..."
** Sae's laughter is pure ParanoiaFuel, especially when you hear her behind doors but she's nowhere to be found.
** After entering the Great Hall in Chapter 4 and witnessing the minor cutscene, take a picture of Mayu. The picture stays, like it does with hazy presences that indicate it's about to show you a different picture. [[spoiler:The picture goes darker and there are dozens of bloody hands circling around her!]] Completely optional, yet terrifying.
** When you go to Itsuki, the only person in the village who doesn't want to kill/maim you, for help, [[spoiler:and his window is closed. So then you finally go into the locked building...and see his lifeless body hanging from a noose in a vision! What's worse, if you then check the window from the inside, it says that it is rusted shut and hasn't been used in a very long time.]]
** Peeking Child and No Escape. The first because [[spoiler:he jumps out at you when you're already fearing Sadako look-alikes]] and the second because [[spoiler:she ALSO jumps out of nowhere and her face is all cut up and bloody]].
** ''The Kiryu twins''. Particularly when you're looking for [[spoiler:the crests to escape the village, and you have to go into a small closet to retrieve said crest. ''One of them is in there. You can hear her neck snapping and popping'']].
** WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL WHY KILL
** Fallen/Falling Woman. She died [[spoiler:running away from the Darkness that seeps from the Abyss and ended up killing herself by jumping from the top of the stairs in the Kiryu house's Clock Hallway]]. She has a tendency of appearing by ''screaming and falling through the ceiling'' whenever you go through the room. She can also show up in random hallways, so don't be surprised she happens to plummet right in front of you.
*** The game also plays a mean prank on you after your first encounter with her. The first time you go into the room with the stairwell after fighting the ghost, a small piece of wood comes loose and falls to the floor with a small clatter. It's harmless and really would be an extremely minor scare if not for the Fallen Woman still being fresh in your mind.
** The "Frozen Butterfly" ending for the ''Deep Crimson Butterfly'' remake. [[spoiler:We finally see ''just'' how crazy Mayu is over her sister... and it isn't pretty.]]
** At one point on the second floor of the Tachibana house, there is a secret room/storeroom Mio can go into. Entering will trigger the sound of a girl saying "Help me" over and over again. When you peer through the camera, the otherwise blank walls have the same characters in Japanese written everywhere. Attempting to leave results in the door being locked. About two minutes inside leads to the voice fading and the door opening again. Nothing attacks you, and there is ''nothing in there''. It's simply a room to freak you out.
** After beating the first house and heading into the save room, you find that the lantern that acts as a save point has dimmed and cannot be used. This only happens when a ghost is nearby. After a moment, the ghost of a woman slowly crawls out of a box in the adjacent closet and begins crawling towards you, and the room cannot be left until she's defeated. She later shows up crawling out of a well located in the basement of a different house. All on her own she's pretty scary, but when this game came out ''TheRing'' was still fresh in many a gamer's mind, making her a particularly potent source of Nightmare Fuel.
** On the connecting bridge between the Tachibana and Kiryu houses, you can witness a pair of disembodied legs walking down the road.
*** In the room connected to this bridge, there is a sequence where Mio must find a doll for a puzzle while Sae pursues you close behind. If that weren't bad enough, Mio has to search for the doll in a tiny claustrophobic closet. But when you go into the closet to find the doll, Sae knocks on the door...
** Chitose's death doubles as this and a TearJerker. It's implied that, due to her vision problems, she accidentally trapped herself in a crawlspace in the Tachibana household and died there (either due to natural causes or, possibly, the arrival of the Darkness). Friendly reminder that Chitose is probably somewhere between the ages of five and ten years-old, and she was trapped in there long enough to scrawl "HELP ME" all over the walls before she died.
** The Kusabi. His appearance is utterly terrifying with the fog and his haunting background music consisting of him in agony. Observe here:https://youtu.be/slCwXuRAk2w.
* In Fatal Frame III, some of the things that happen inside the house can make you afraid to sleep ([[spoiler:there is an arm under the bed]]) or to even go to the bathroom ([[spoiler:there are Needle Women hiding in the mirror to come out and attack while Rei is showering]]).
** Think of the fate of the Tattooed Priestess [[spoiler:and then look at just how many of them there are in the Chamber of Thorns and realize that all of them are fated to sleep for eternity and none of them actually get happy dreams because of the tattoos that they bear]]. It gets worse with the fate of those that failed: [[spoiler:they're skinned alive and their body is sent to cross over, while their skin is enshrined and prayed over to keep the sorrow from spilling out]].
** Only the dream world contains any ghosts. [[FromBadToWorse At first.]] They do numerous creepy-to-terrifying things when they start invading Rei's house, but the one that sticks with this troper is one of the low-key, quiet ones: at some point, if you pay attention, you'll go into Rei's bedroom and see [[spoiler:a pale, slender arm sticking out from under her bed]]. When you approach, [[spoiler:instead of simply vanishing like many of the ghosts do, the arm ''slowly and silently pulls itself under the bed'']].
** Needle Woman: They love to sneak up on you while you're in Camera Mode so that, when they attack, all you see are their hands that (of course) have needles sticking in them wrap around you.
** Woman Brushing: This ghost is creepy on her own, but she has one choice moment: at one point, when you enter the Kimono Room (her usual haunt), you find her crying behind a screen. She won't attack you, so obviously the smart choice is to take her picture, right? She fades away and reappears RIGHT IN YOUR FACE! The fact that she's constantly smiling at you makes it all the more unsettling.
** These games love their doll scares. In one room of the Manor of Sleep is a regenerating Type-14 film. Right next to the film is a toy doll that you expect to do something but never really does. Try looking at it through the camera, and proceed to have your heart stopped when [[spoiler:its head moves to look back]].
*** The fourth game repeats that trick in chapter five. When you're in the room with a mannequin and coffin, try looking through the view finder with the mannequin centered in the frame. [[spoiler:Its head promptly turns to [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdx_pCBM1H4#t=45s look at you]].]]
** Especially just after the [[spoiler:second or third night when Rei wakes up after having subdued Yoshino, only to look to the side and realize ''she's right there'']]. Also, [[spoiler:the bit where Kei is in the Thorn Room and the stakes holding Reika to the ground suddenly begin to pull out, followed by the end where Rei is there, and Reika gets to her feet in the most unnatural and creepy way]].
** You can walk into a specific closet in the Manor of Sleep to collect an item, but when you turn around to exit, the door slams shut. Faces and hand prints appear on the walls and ceiling accompanied by horrible moans... After a few moments the sounds are abruptly cut off and the door opens again while a terrifying woman's voice asks [[http://youtu.be/OLLa2jcgguc?t=1m5s "Why are you running away...?"]]
** The fact that most of the third game takes place inside of dreams. Imagine going through the death of a loved one and feeling horrible about it, go to bed one night, and then start having dreams about a snow-covered haunted manor that traps you if you follow your beloved loved ones further into it!
** Not only that, the descriptions of some of the house ghosts serve only as ParanoiaFuel for the player, in particular the Woman Under Desk description:
-->Have you looked under your desk recently? Maybe you should check more often.
** Crawling Woman attacks in a passage so small that only Miku can crawl into it and Rei later encounters her in attic of Yuu's room. This is pretty unpleasant for anyone with claustophobia.
** As if the [[UndeadChild very concept]] of the four Handmaidens (See the Tattooed Priestess? They're the ones who are supposed to [[spoiler:impale]] her--and they're all ''prepubescent'') wasn't creepy enough, we discover a journal entry from one of them where she reflects on her future job--[[TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior and is]] ''[[EnfanteTerrible relishing]]'' [[CreepyChild it.]]
* Fatal Frame 4 has Ayako's room, with its eerie yellow glow, doll parts hanging from the ceiling, and the whispering and laughing that can be heard in the background. And then Ayako herself, who, at the beginning of your first battle with her, appears by [[spoiler:jumping down to grab you by the shoulders]]. Never mind the things she's done to the other patients and even the nurses in the sanatorium...
** Getsuyuu Syndrome. Symptoms include memory loss, sleepwalking, no longer recognizing your own face or seeing it as blurred and distorted in a reflective surface. And just seeing the face of a patient in a more advanced condition can cause ''your own condition'' to degenerate further...
* [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2slBx0MfzHs Even when simply invoking an Easter Egg]], [[TheFourthWallWillNotProtectYou you're not safe from the horror]]. Leaving any of the first three Fatal Frame games idle for at least five minutes will cause various "screensavers" to appear, all with the intention of creepily PaintingTheMedium.
* In the fourth game, Kirishima is [[BlatantLies quite]] [[SarcasmMode happy]] to be [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZ24X6IaU-s&t=6m36s greeted by Dr. Katagiri]]!
** When he enters the painter Yukou Magaki's room for the first time, he seemingly trips over something in the messy room. Turns out it's actually Magaki, crawling on the floor and grabbing his leg. He's just as happy to see him, not.
* And some of the music in the fourth game is just [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxKzJu1WdVc plain]] [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rw1-eBFm5fI creepy]].
* Fatal Frame IV has a note telling you what needed to be done, in order to stop the post-mortem Blooming process: cut the person's face off! Thank goodness it was done to corpses, so it's not as bad as one might think. They're already dead. But then Choushiro goes into the morgue and a picture can be taken off a body under a sheet. You get to see what it looks like, when the face is cut off...
* Fatal Frame V ramped up the BodyHorror and {{Gorn}} on the ghosts. Most of the Mikos have had their [[EyeScream eyes slashed out]], one has glass shards stuck in his back after he hung himself and crashed into the window below (and the first time you fight him, he comes bursting through that same window) then there's [[spoiler:Fuyuhi Himino]], who is [[PsychicAssistedSuicide forced to cut her own throat]]. It's just as attractive as it sounds.
** Even better, after defeating her, you see what happened in a flashback: she tried to resist the spirit's influence, but was distracted by what looked like her friend and slipped. All we see is [[HighPressureBlood blood pouring onto her shoes]], but somehow it's enough.
** To say nothing of BigBad Oose, who looks like a drowned woman, or the many victims for the Yomi, who have the black water streaming from their eyes like tears.
** And then there is the inexplicable ghost known only as 'Tall Woman'. A gigantic, freakishly thin woman with creepily elongated limbs and a perpetual SlasherSmile. And there is absolutely zero information or backstory for how she came to be this way or why she is on the mountain. A likely theory is that she might be a reference to the SlendermanMythos... Sleep tight!
*** Turns out she's actually based upon a Japanese creepypasta of her own. The legend of [[http://japuttoglobal.blogspot.se/2012/01/hachishakusama.html Hasshaku-sama, the Eight-Feet-Tall Lady.]]
*** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2A0VXVnnf0&list=UUtnx9B6P98srTwNdHwDXx8w#t=1154 She even has the honor]] of providing one of the few true [[JumpScare jumpscares]] of the game.
*** Another creepy attribute is she'll say "You'd better get used to me." Meaning she's ACTIVELY STALKING YOU unlike a lot of ghosts that are just reacting to you. She's legitimately malevolent unlike the other ghosts who are victims.
** If you aren't careful the ghosts in the mountain will force you reenact their suicide on yourself thus you could end up dying the same way as they do like poor Fuyuhi Himino who end up slitting her own throat because a ghost compelled her to who also died by slitting her own throat.

* Read the cover of the American release: Based On A True Story! ([[BasedOnABigFatLie Not Really]]) The mansion in the game is based off of an actual mansion in Japan that is supposed to be haunted.
* The very concept of the Rope Shrine Maiden and her duty. [[spoiler:She is tied down to a stone altar by her wrist, ankles and neck; then the priests begin to savagely tear her apart, to ensure a continued seal on the Hell Gate in the mansion's basement.
]]
** Especially just after * The audio tapes found are unsettling, despite the [[spoiler:second or third night when Rei wakes up after having subdued Yoshino, only to look [[DullSurprise lacking voiceacting]], simply because the robotic-sounding voices are so off.
* What happened
to the side and realize ''she's right there'']]. Also, [[spoiler:the bit where Kei is in people who headed to Himuro Mansion; all ended up suffering horrible, gruesome deaths. And this includes the Thorn Room and the stakes holding Reika people who were in Himuro Mansion prior to the ground suddenly begin to pull out, followed by Calamity.
* Broken Neck Woman, who haunts
the end where Rei is there, mansion by floating backwards. But her head flops over and Reika gets to her feet in is constantly staring at you upside-down.
* Long Arms because of his freakishly [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin long arms]] and he inhabits
the most unnatural and creepy way]].
** You can walk into a specific closet in the Manor of Sleep to collect an item, but when you turn
mansion by shambling around to exit, the door slams shut. Faces in a crouched position and hand prints appear on the walls and ceiling accompanied by horrible moans...
** Not
only that, the descriptions of some of the house ghosts serve only as ParanoiaFuel lifts himself up for the player, in particular the Woman Under Desk description:
-->Have you looked under your desk recently? Maybe you should check more often.
an attack. Then there are his victims...
** Crawling Woman attacks Girl. [[spoiler:She was pulled under the tatami in a passage so small that only Miku can crawl the Doll Room by Long Arms, who strangled her beneath the house.]] She now haunts the Doll Room, crawling on the floor and paralyzing the player with her scream.
** Girl In The Well. [[spoiler:Long Arms' second victim was pulled
into it the large stone well in the garden and Rei later encounters drowned.]] Half of her in attic of Yuu's room. This body is pretty unpleasant for anyone with claustophobia.
** As if the [[UndeadChild very concept]] of the four Handmaidens (See the Tattooed Priestess? They're the ones who are supposed to [[spoiler:impale]] her--and they're all ''prepubescent'') wasn't creepy enough, we discover a journal entry
horribly disfiguired and bloody from one of them where she reflects on her future job--[[TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior being dragged across stone.
** Boy Hiding. [[spoiler:Long Arms pulled him into the grandfather clock
and is]] ''[[EnfanteTerrible relishing]]'' [[CreepyChild it.strangled him.]]
* Blind Demon. [[spoiler:A sacrificial maiden that had the Blinding Mask put upon her. Said mask has ''spikes'' in the eyes that were forced through hers.]] She now roams the mansion screaming "[[EyeScream My eyes! My eyes!]]" and bleeding from the sockets.

[[AC:
Fatal Frame 4 has Ayako's room, II]]

* In the beginning, Mio is seen in profile and a hand places itself onto her shoulder. Thinking it's Mayu, she puts her own on it to comfort her. And then Mayu walks past her. [[spoiler:But the hand is still there.]]
* Sae in her entirety! Her laughter is pure ParanoiaFuel, especially when you can hear her behind doors but can't ''see'' her. And it gets worse in the seventh chapter, where she is following Mio and tries to kill her.
* There's a small cutscene when Mio enters the Great Hall
with its Mayu partway through the game. [[SchmuckBait Go ahead, take a picture of Mayu after the scene]]. Unlike most pictures that mean nothing, hers remains for a bit. [[spoiler:Then it gets darker and you can see dozens of bloody, cut-up arms circling the edge of the picture and all of them are grabbing towards Mayu.]] Completely optional. Completely terrifying.
* Peeking Child and Armless Woman. The first is in the Kiryu place and [[spoiler:simply ''pops up'' in the small window in front of you]], when you were probably looking at that item beneath the window. The second because she comes after an almost inconspicuous Dangling Arm. [[spoiler:Approaching the Dangling Arm will have her flop down from above, her cut-up face in your full view.]]
* After beating the Osaka house and heading into the dressing room for the save point, the save point stops working right after you use it. That only happens when a ghost is nearby... then a woman's ghost slowly crawls out of the box in the room and you cannot leave, until she is defeated. On her own, already pretty creepy, but when this game came out ''Film/TheRing'' was still fresh in one's mind.
* Late in the game, you finally gain access to the storage where Itsuki is being held. [[spoiler:Upon entering, you see his lifeless body hanging from a noose. Inspecting the window from the inside of his cell, you'll see that it's been rusted shut and not been used in ages.]]
* In the Tachibana house, you can find what appears to be a figure wrapped in up in blankets and sitting upright. Mio wonders if it's the doll, but when you leave, you hear a distorted "Stay with me..."
** The Wii Edition added something extra to it. There's an item to obtain at the thing's feet. Grab it [[spoiler:and the whole thing collapses]].
* The [[CreepyTwins Kiryu Twins]]. Particularly when [[spoiler:you're looking for the family crests to escape the village]] and enter a hidden closet. One of them is in there. Just sitting there. ''Then'' she moves and you can hear her neck and limbs snapping and popping.
* [=WhydoIhavetokillWhydoIhavetokillWhydoIhavetokill=][[MadnessMantra WhydoIhavetokillWhydoIhavetokillWhydoIhavetokillWhydoIhavetokill]].
* Falling Woman. [[spoiler:She was running from the Darkness seeping from the Abyss and ended up dying when jumping off the top of the stairs in the Kiryu's Clock Hallway.]] She tends to appear by screaming and falling through the ceiling.
** Right after encountering the Falling Woman the first time, the game plays up your paranoia. Entering the next hallway, a piece of wood will fall to the ground. Sounds like nothing, but after having just encountered the woman, your nerves are on edge.
* The Tachibana house has a small storage on the second floor, with an item inside. Going in and grabbing the item, you can hear a girl's voice saying "Help me" and looking through the camera, you find it written all over the walls. And the door locks if you try to leave. Eventually, the voice fades and the door opens and you can leave. It serves [[BigLippedAlligatorMoment no purpose]]. It's just a room to freak you out.
* You can find pairs of disembodied legs walking through the village at certain points. [[UnusuallyUninterestingSight Just strolling]].
* Chitose's death, which also doubles as a TearJerker. [[spoiler:Due to her vision problems, she accidentally trapped herself in a crawlspace of the Tachibana home and died there; either naturally or when the Darkness arrived.]] And she's maybe ten years old. And multiple of the locations she can be hiding in have her scrapped "Help" or "Big Brother" into the walls. Multiple times.
* The Kusabi. His appearance is utterly terrifying, then he's surrounded by fog in which you can make out distorted skulls at times and the haunting background music consists of him in his agony. And he has a OneHitKill. ''Then'' you find out how he's created. [[spoiler:An outsider is sacrificed through the means of the Cutting Ritual, which consists of slicing the person over and over and over, giving them a slow and agonizing death. Most people don't even survive ''that'' part. If they do, they are bound and thrown into the Abyss while still alive.]] Near the Abyss, you can find a crack to look into and see failed Kusabi.

[[AC: Fatal Frame III]]

* The ghosts are only in the dreams. [[FromBadToWorse At first]]. Then they invade the home. [[spoiler:There's an arm under the bed that ''drags itself away slowly'', instead of disappearing like most ghosts, and Needle Women in the mirror, waiting to attack Rei when she's showering.]]
* The fate of the Tattooed Priestess. [[spoiler:She is covered in tatoos to bear the pain of other people and is doomed to sleep, without any happy dreams, because their tatoos bear the pain.]] And then the priestesses that failed. [[spoiler:They are skinned alive, their body sent to cross over and the tatooed skin is enshrined and prayed over, to prevent the sorrow from spilling out.]]
* Reika's is worse. [[spoiler:Her last memory is seeing her lover being killed in front of her and that's the only thing she has seen for however long it took for Rei to finally appease her.]]
* Needle Women. They love to sneak up on you in Camera Mode and all you can see, before the attack you, are their needle-filled arms about to wrap themselves around you.
* Woman Brushing. Creepy on her own, but at one point, she's in the Kimono Room behind a screen. She's not attacking you, so you should [[SchmuckBait take a picture]], right? She'll fade away and reappear ''right in front of you''!
* Crawling Woman. She attacks in a passage so small that only Miku can fit into it. And Rei encounters her later in the attic of Yuu's room. Very unpleasant for anyone with claustrophobia.
* After finally subduing Yoshino, Rei wakes up and [[spoiler:Yoshino's ghost is ''right there'' and grabbing her arm]]! And much later, when Kei enters the Chamber of Thorns [[spoiler:and the stakes begin to pull themselves out of Reika's body]]. Not to mention the creepy and unnatural way Reika gets up when Rei confronts her.
* The fact that majority of the third game takes place in a dream. Imagine going through the death of a loved on and feeling guilty, then having dreams of a snow-covered, haunted mansion that traps you within it, if you follow your loved ones further in.
* The fact that Yoshino was surrounded by the corpses of her loved ones for several days, unable to move, before she was found and rescued.
* The descriptions of the house ghosts...
--> ''Have you looked under your desk recently? Maybe you should check more often.''
* There's a closet you can walk into for an item, but when you turn around, the exit locks and faces and handprints appear on the walls. Disturbing, horrible moaning starts up... then suddenly stops and you can leave again. Just like the small storage in the previous game, it's simply there to freak you out.
* The concept of the Handmaidens. [[spoiler:They are the ones who are supposed to impale her with stakes.]] And all of them are prepubescent. And if that isn't creepy enough, one of the maiden's diary has her talk about her duty and [[CreepyChild looking foward]] [[EnfantTerrible to it]].

[[AC: Fatal Frame IV]]

* Ayako is this incarnate. And her room has an
eerie yellow glow, glow to it, doll parts hanging from the ceiling, ceiling and getting in your way and the whispering and laughing that can be heard you hear in the background. And then Ayako herself, who, at the beginning of your first battle with her, appears by for the first time [[spoiler:jumping down to grab and grabbing you by the shoulders]]. Leaving any of the first three Fatal Frame games idle for at least five minutes will cause various "screensavers" to appear, all with the intention of creepily PaintingTheMedium.
* In the fourth game,
Kirishima is [[BlatantLies quite]] [[SarcasmMode quite happy]] to be [[http://www.[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZ24X6IaU-s&t=6m36s greeted by Dr. Katagiri]]!

[[AC:
Fatal Frame IV has a note telling you what needed to be done, in order to stop the post-mortem Blooming process: cut the person's face off! Thank goodness it was done to corpses, so it's not as bad as one might think. They're already dead. But then Choushiro goes into the morgue and a picture can be taken off a body under a sheet. You get to see what it looks like, when the face is cut off...
V]]

* Fatal Frame V The game ramped up the BodyHorror and {{Gorn}} on of the ghosts. series. Most of the Mikos you meet have had their [[EyeScream eyes slashed out]], one ghost has glass shards stuck in his back after he hung himself and crashed into the window below (and the first time you fight him, and he comes bursting jumps through that same window) then there's the window, when you first encounter him. And [[spoiler:Fuyuhi Himino]] was forced to [[PsyschicAssistedSuicide cut her own throat]].
* Just the fact that, if you aren't careful on the mountain, the ghosts will force you to reenact their suicide.
* After defeating
[[spoiler:Fuyuhi Himino]], who the player is [[PsychicAssistedSuicide forced treated to cut a flashback of her own throat]]. It's just as attractive as it sounds.
** Even better, after defeating her, you see what happened in a flashback: she
death. She tried to resist the spirit's influence, but was distracted for a second by what looked like her friend and slipped. All we you see is [[HighPressureBlood blood pouring onto her shoes]], but somehow it's enough.
** To say nothing of * BigBad Oose, Ouse Kurosawa, who looks like a drowned woman, or and the other many victims for of the Yomi, who have the black water streaming from their eyes like tears.
** And then there is the inexplicable ghost known only as 'Tall Woman'. * Tall Woman. A gigantic, freakishly thin woman women with creepily elongated limbs arms and a perpetual SlasherSmile. And there is absolutely zero ''no'' information or backstory for on how or why she came to be this way or why she is on the mountain. A likely theory She is that she might be a reference to the SlendermanMythos... Sleep tight!
*** Turns out she's actually
based upon a off of the Japanese creepypasta of her own. The legend of [[http://japuttoglobal.blogspot.se/2012/01/hachishakusama.de/2012/01/hachishakusama.html Hasshaku-sama, the Eight-Feet-Tall Lady.]]

*** Another creepy attribute is she'll say
Lady]].
** The Tall Woman also says
"You'd better get used to me." me". Meaning she's ACTIVELY STALKING YOU unlike a lot of ghosts that are just reacting she is ''actively stalking you'', compared to you. She's legitimately malevolent unlike the other ghosts who are victims.
** If you aren't careful
simply react to you. She is legitimately malevolent, unlike the ghosts in the mountain will force you reenact their suicide on yourself thus you could end up dying the same way as they do like poor Fuyuhi Himino who end up slitting her own throat because a ghost compelled her to who also died by slitting her own throat. other ghosts.

The picture stays, like it does with hazy presences that indicate it's about to show you a different picture.
