*** Not to mention their visuals are taken to more emphasized levels in the second ''Country'' game, where they are arguably more realistic looking in both sprite and artwork....have fun with nightmares of them; arguably they are less intimidating in later 3D games however since they're more cartoonish and less fuzzy.

* "Speak No Evil, Dude" was probably the darkest episode of the series. The extremely deadly Kongo Bongo Gone Wrongo disease is going around, and Diddy catches it. The only cure is a single purple banana, of which there is only one. If he isn't cured, he'll ''die''. It goes FromBadToWorse when K. Rool gets the disease due to a misunderstanding, and his minions plan to blow up Kongo Bongo. DK is left with a SadisticChoice: Save his best friend and let Kongo Bongo be destroyed, or cure K. Rool so he can call off teh attack. Fortunately, in the end, things turned out all right as both Diddy and K. Rool are both cured and the attack is called off, but it's still an extremely dark episode for a kid's show.

* "Speak No Evil, Dude" was probably the darkest episode of the series. There's the disease going around called "Kongo Bongo Gone Wrongo" disease and whoever has it will die! Diddy actually catches the disease by the bird and only cure is a purple banana but there's only one left and if Diddy isn't cured he will die that scary enough alone but it gets worse once King Rool catches the disease due to the misunderstanding Klump and Krusha were going to blow up Kongo Bongo Island and everyone else on the island will die as well! Now DK has to choose to either cure Diddy or King Rool! Fortunely, in the end things turned out all right Diddy gets cured in time and King Rool gets cured as well and stops his minions from blowing up the island and punishes them! But still that was a pretty dark episode for a light-hearted series.
** Also, K Rool for some reason has a stockpile of explosives large enough to blow up the island. In another episode "Buried Treasure" Rool seeks out a possible doomsday device. Basically, the king is deranged and corrupt enough to consider carpetbombing.

* ''[=DKC=] 2'' featured the truly terrifying haunted hall level - a mine cart race. Except this time, you're running FROM Kackle, the ghostly crocodile from Hell, who laughs when he catches you. Not to mention the panicking music and the TIME LIMIT!! For the latter case, there are two kinds of barrels along the path that let you handle this limit: the green plus barrel (which increase your time) and the red minus barrel (which decrease). The thing about these are two segments: in one halfway past the stage, the time limit is rather generous (over 30 seconds), but there are only minus barrels, which means too many wrong jumps... and it's over. And in the last segment, often the plus and minus barrels are nestled together, which makes it very easy for the average player to mistime and hit minus barrels by mistake, cleaving your time limit and allowing Kackle to edge... ever closer... to you.

* "Scorch 'n Torch" has you running through a brush fire as it ravages the African savannah
* "Frozen Frenzy" has you exploring the factory area from "Returns", but frozen over. The Factory, despite being an industrial area, was actually a very bright and cheery area in the last game. It's now much darker, rusted (the more realistic rust visuals of the Wii U make it worse), frozen, taken over by the snowmads. But what really seals it is the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0o_B_qGoZ8A music]], which begins with a menacing drumbeat and eventually segues into an offkey DarkReprise of "Fear Factory", one of the most beloved music tracks in the previous game and the series.

The DS version of this game is more like a [[Nightmare Retardant]], Retardant to most people, since in this the DS version, Wizpig simply yawns and the camera has a lack of zooming in for menacing effect.

They're covered in spikes, and have to be killed with either an animal helper or some kind of object ... as long as they're yellow zingers. The red zingers are ''completely invincible!'' This can spell doom for you in a lot of situations.

[[folder:Examples for Donkey Kong 64]]
[[quoteright:350:[[VideoGame/DonkeyKong64 http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Madjack.jpg]]]]
[[caption-width-right:350: Hi, I'm [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Mad Jack]], [[Film/ChildsPlay and I'm your friend to the end. Hidey-ho ha ha ha...]]]]

* Mad Jack from VideoGame/DonkeyKong64: a giant Jack-in-the-Box resembling a demented cyborg crocodile with DonaldDuck's voice and part of its paint job chipped off, revealing a glowing red eye. If it isn't all that scary, [[ItMakesSenseInContext it ought to be.]] What'll really get to you is his introduction: he drops out of the reject chute ([[EvenEvilHasStandards in a factory already creating "evil toys", no less]]) pops out, does the standard boo scare, then laughs snidely at you. Not only, this WakeUpCallBoss has everything: a dark room, small platforms raised to great heights, a MonsterClown CreepyDoll, and EvilLaughter every minute. In other words, every single childhood phobia in the book in one single boss.
** The DA Nintober event put Mad Jack on their list, and part of his description was: "In a toy factory [[NoOSHACompliance where health and safety are not a concern]], it takes a very special toy to end up in the reject bin...".
* K. Rool himself from [=DK64=]. The ominous music is a bonus, but the voice acting in the intro is a bit of NightmareRetardant given its similarities to Dr. Claw from InspectorGadget.
* Dogadon in Fungi Forest: after dealing a certain amount of damage to him, he starts making the platform sink, as the music gets faster and faster as the platform gets lower.
* The wind-up Kremlings from Frantic Factory are Nightmare Fuel incarnate. Everything about them is unsetting: glowing red eyes, circular walking pattern when not seeing you, squeaky noises when seeing you.
* "Creepy Castle" in Donkey Kong 64 had ''rotting hands'' as platforms. Inside the actual castle, there's a torture chamber after a dark maze and a very realistic skull-shaped portal leading to a red maze made completely out of bones.
* Creepy Castle had [[NothingIsScarier an unseen individual]] [[HellIsThatNoise moaning constantly.]]
* Angry Aztec is an eerie temple with ominous music that just makes you feel uncomfortable, and once you grab the banana at the end, a voice suddenly shouts "[[GetOut GET OUT!]]" and aims at you with some sort of gun. You then have 25 seconds to get out of there before being shot down. Said "GET OUT!" comes from an assassin who tries to kill you once you get the bananas. In certain Crystal Caves challenges and in the greenhouse in Creepy Castle, he returns if you fail a challenge and gives you only 10 seconds to escape this time.
** One Chunky Kong challenge in Crystal Caves has you avoiding lights. Hit a light, and you get killed instantly after one second!
* [[SlippySlideyIceWorld The Crystal Caves]] seem like a relatively calm place at first, it's very ambient and you're just walking around gazing at the serenity of the area until [[HellIsThatNoise a scary noise]] accompanies stalactites falling everywhere.
** [[spoiler: Good news: it's possible for Tiny Kong to locate the source of the falling stalactites. The bad news: it's a gigantic Kosha, which is about ten times her size! He still goes down normally, but YEESH!]]
* The fact that the entire Hideout Helm level was timed, considering that if time runs out, all of DK Isles gets destroyed.
* The Game Over screen (thankfully skippable, though) has the evil laughter K. Rool showing the Blast-O-Matic about to blow DK Isles up, which was pretty intense for some back when they were children, joining the ranks of BanjoKazooie in the "save and quit is not an option" territory.
* The Golden Banana where you have to swim into the giant mechanical fish. Not helped by the fact that a late-game glitch renders the banana almost impossible to obtain after getting the Sniper Scope if you don't know how to circumvent it.
* Anytime you asked Wrinkly - Cranky's dead wife - for hints, she would always enter with her wailing.
** Wrinkly is heavily implied to have died between Donkey Kong Country 3 and [=DK64=].
** The constant crying of the Banana Fairy is unnerving as well.
* The EvilLaughter that occurs throughout the game is nerve-wracking, especially when you least expect it, like when using a barrel ability or an animal pal ability where it's not allowed.
* The Green Klap Traps in Angry Aztec don't die right away. If you defeat them, their teeth survive and come after you.
* Fungi Forest at night is pretty scary to those unfamiliar with the level layout.
* Creepy Castle's mine cart section. It's bad enough with the loud chase music and random sirens going off constantly, but how about the tombstones that fly out the ground as you approach or the giant skeleton demon thing shooting explosive fireballs at poor DK?
* The tunnels in Jungle Japes and Gloomy Galleon have whispers echo throughout.
* The secret cavern reached in Jungle Japes by pounding a large X as Chunky has a narrow path above a BottomlessPit lined with massive torches and a giant creepy face at the end. The music certainly doesn't help matters.
** Said creepy music is reused in a beehive within the same level, and the ghost ship in Gloomy Galleon.
* As Donkey Kong, you have to complete a few Barrel Cannon challenges that are set in the sky, while a windy and lonely rendition of the aforementioned cave music plays. These challenges tend to invoke feelings of acrophobia.

* Anybody who's played the ''Donkey Kong Country'' games probably remembers the shockingly depressing Game Over screens. The first one shows DK and Diddy horribly beaten down in a dark void with depressing music playing (as you can see from the page image), the second one shows Diddy and Dixie locked up while depressing music plays and the words GAME OVER!! hover down to taunt you (with the whole screen slowly turning blood red), and finally, the most depressing and creepy of all, the third one, shows Kiddy and Dixie in a baby crib, while a [[IronicNurseryTune creepy Music Box plays really depressing music]] (on which you, too, can play by [[ButtonMashing pressing buttons randomly]]); when you exit (or the song ends), [[LastNoteNightmare you hear someone slam a door]].
** The Game Over screen from the first game ruined [[RaineSageRocks my]] childhood. It made it to where I couldn't play the game for ''years''. The depressing, down-right frightening music and the jagged, wood-like font didn't help. There's just something really ''morbid'' about that font...
** This troper started to have nigh-insomnia after the Game Over screen came up while he was playing recently. The fact that I was in a barely-lit room and it was pitch-black outside only made it worse. * Krow, the first boss of ''[=DKC2=]'', is sacrificing his own young in the fight, as he uses his eggs to attack you and you must ''break his eggs'' against him to attack him. Made worse with the later fight with Kreepy Krow, and the Mini-Necky ghosts he sends out which are implied to be his dead children...
* ''[=DKC3=]'''s [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2IXKsYHGJ0 underwater music]].
** It becomes more jarring in the level Floodlit Fish. When you hit Gleamin' Bream, a creepy gothic moaning accompanies the music.
* In ''[=DKC=] 2'', there's a set of Kremling enemies called Klobbers that dash at you in barrels bumping into you. The green ones bump you around, not even damaging you, and can even be jumped on to be thrown as weapons. Yellow ones cause you to drop bananas when they bump into you, more annoying and a bit startling at first, but if you don't pick them back up it isn't a huge loss. Red ones in TNT barrels (called Kabooms) are a bit annoying, blowing up on contact. It's the rare black Klobbers that are real Nightmare Fuel, however. They do the same thing as the yellow ones do... oh, except instead of making you drop bananas, you drop LIVES. Not even K. Rool can do more than make you lose one life at a time (after at least one back-up hit), meanwhile this black freak of nature dashes at you casually spilling them all over the place. Bump you into a pit? You just lost two lives right there. Oh, did I mention that it has BLOOD RED EYES? It doesn't help that they all make a rather creepy sound already, either.
** It's even possible to ''go below zero lives'' with the black Klobbers.
** [[HellIsThatNoise AHHRRNNG!!! *skreeech*]]
*** Another thing considering those barrel enemies from [=DKC2=] and [=DKC3=]: when you smack them, they just revert back to the barrel. When you break the barrel against a wall or enemy, the Kremling inside doesn't fall out from inside it; ''he WAS the barrel!!'' And add to the fact that when you broke a barrel enemy in [=DKC3=], they'd also make a death cry, AFTER THEY WERE SHATTERED.
* Have you ever seen the [[http://www.mariowiki.com/images/e/e6/Bananabird.jpg official artwork]] of Banana Birds? Those ''eyes'' . . .

*** Those things resemble veins, and considering the body of the thing is a partially peeled banana, [[FreudWasRight the design is eerily reminiscent of a circumc--]]'''[[WesternAnimation/{{Animaniacs}} GOODNIGHT, EVERYBODY!]]'''
* In Donkey Kong Country 2, they give you Lockjaw and Snapjaw. If you get too close to Lockjaw, it swims really fast towards you and tries to bite you. However, Snapjaw is even worse. In its levels, it follows you on the surface of the water, and if you so much as put one toe in it's jaw grows three times in size and it bites you. Terrified me when I was young.
* [=DKC2=]'s [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1D95R9h7Jqw infamous Castle Crush glitch]]. * While DummiedOut, the [=DKC2=] sprites for [[http://www.unseen64.net/wp-content/gallery/donkey-kong-country-2/dkc2_unused_diddy.png Diddy]] [[http://www.unseen64.net/wp-content/gallery/donkey-kong-country-2/dkc2_unused_dixie.png and Dixie]] mourning is pretty disturbing.
* [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhZVYuLUc7A Screech's Sprint.]] Not only is he a horrifying crow-thing and not only do you die if you lose his race, but the accompanying music has that spooky moaning noise.
* Really, pretty much all of ''[=DKC2=]'' was much DarkerAndEdgier than the original. ''DKC'' was colorful and upbeat with (mostly) pleasant ambient music; whereas in the sequel you're all alone in a completely hostile environment where everything is against you, and the music is (with one or two exceptions) wistful at best, flat-out depressing at worst.

Thankfully the glitch no longer destroys the game in the VirtualConsole rerelease.

** Dogadon and Mad Jack are fine (In fact he thinks they're cool because they are intimidating and a bit epic) with this troper, but what really terrifies him are the toy enemies from Frantic Factory and the killer tomatoes from Fungi Forest. He wouldn't finish the game 100% (or more) because they were so flipping creepy, amongst other things. When he saw the gigantic toy enemy the first time, he refused to fight it because he did not know how to react when he first saw it. As for the tomatoes, they pop out like a surprise and bite at you if you get near them.
*** The wind-up Kremlings from Frantic Factory are Nightmare Fuel incarnate. Everything, ''everything'' about them is unsetting. The glowing red eyes, the way they just walk around in circles when they don't see you, the squeaky ''wik-wik-wik-wik-wik'' sound they make when they DO see you... worst part is, the first time I saw them I didn't know that you had to kill them with the orange grenades. Naturally, I tried punching them, and no matter how many times I hit them, they simply ''would not die''. Brrrr.
* Creepy Castle in Donkey Kong 64 was just disturbing in a handful of ways-- the rotting hands you have to use as platforms with Tiny come to mind, but this troper just has to ask: is he the only one that was inexplicably but deeply terrified of the ominous, useless pillar in that level...?
** Inside the actual castle is what freaked me out years ago. I recall there being a torture chamber after a dark maze. Also the very realistic skull which you must enter through to reach the red maze made completely out of bones. The ballroom was always rather scary as well, because of the hollow, psychotic sounding laughs that play in the background.
* Also from [=DK64=], '''whatever''' is making ''that sound'' in the catacombs of Creepy Castle. Donkey Kong's Minecart level got to some too.
* [[ThatOneLevel That temple]] in Angry Aztec. It's an eerie temple with ominous music that just makes you feel uncomfortable, and once you grab the banana at the end, a voice suddenly shouts "GET OUT!!!" and aims at you with some sort of gun. You then have 25 seconds to get the hell out of there before being shot down. Also, you have to do it 5 times.
** Yeah, that "GET OUT!" from DK 64. That sound comes from an assassin who tries to kill you once you get bananas in a certain Angry Aztec temple. In certain Crystal Caves challenges and in the greenhouse in Creepy Castle, he returns if you fail a challenge. And gives you only 10 seconds to escape. Finally, one Chunky Kong challenge in Crystal Caves has you avoiding lights. Hit a light, and you get killed instantly after one second!!!
*** There's also a few areas in Crystal Caves where the "GET OUT" recurs. One of them is immediately followed by a countdown set at zero and instant death.
*** I thought it said "CHARGE!"
* The Krack-Shot Kroc, who wasn't nearly this scary in ''Donkey Kong Country 3''. He yells, "GET OUT!!!", and then [[WhyDontYouJustShootHim shoots you]] after a specified time. In one section of Crystal Caves, he actually does kill you (he only hurts you in other areas). The player never sees the Krack-Shot Kroc, just a [[CrosshairAware crosshair.]] Then, a timer starts ticking with anywhere between a minute and three seconds on it. In the latter's case, the player, especially if it's the first time they encounter him, will probably be dead before they realize what's happening.
** [[SlippySlideyIceWorld The Crystal Caves]] seem like a relatively calm place at first, it's very ambient and you're just walking around gazing at the serenity of the area... wait, the HellIsThatNoise? Why are stalactites falling everywhere!? ''AAAAAAAUUUUUUUGH''
* The fact that the entire Hideout Helm level was timed. What was the problem, specifically? If time runs out, ''all of DK Isles gets destroyed''.
** Some people may never see that Game Over screen. I believe that if you got all of the blueprints, the time limit became something ridiculous like 30 minutes or an entire hour.
*** 50 minutes, actually.
*** How about the Game Over screen? The evil laughter K. Rool does with the screen closing in on his face while doing it does look like it would be bad enough, and then there is the part where it shows the Blast-O-Matic about to blow DK Isles up; all of it does seem like it would be pretty intense for some back when they were children, and it gives yet ''another'' reason to not use the "quit the game" option to return to the menu in yet another one of Rare's games.
**** You can always just skip over it.
* The Golden Banana where you have to swim into the giant mechanical fish. Not helped by the fact that a late-game glitch renders the banana almost impossible to obtain after getting the Sniper Scope if you don't know how to circumvent it, meaning you have to keep swimming into it again, and again, and again...
* Anytime you asked Cranky's dead wife for hints, she would always enter with that creepy freakin' wailing!
** Also, the constant crying of the Banana Fairy is really unnerving.
* FridgeHorror example, Diddy Kong sociopathically stamps the shit out of a dragonfly, and he willingly eats explosives. These may have been intended to be silly, but it comes off more as him having a love for killing and being willing to suicide bomb enemies if need be.
* The EvilLaughter that occurs throughout the game is nerve-wracking, especially when you least except it. If you use a barrel ability or an animal pal ability where it's not allowed, the sudden, "NUOOOOOHAHAHAHA!" (or "Rrrrrreeeoohahaha!") is enough to make you never want to do it again. It gets worse in Hideout Helm the time limit is already enough pressure, but the laughter occurs at every 10 minute interval and every minute during the last 10 minutes, as if someone's mocking you.
* The Green Klap Traps in Angry Aztec don't die right away. If you defeat them, their ''teeth'' survive and come after you. Imagine how frightening that is, if you don't suspect it!
* Fungi Forest at night is pretty scary, especially if you're unfamiliar with the level layout. This troper stumbled across the evil tomatoes at night, as well as the passage outside of the mill that had the ground coated with thorns. In the dark, this troper could not make out that it was thorns, causing her to think that Donkey Kong was being attacked by an invisible enemy. Cue every attack available, with no sign of beating the thing.
