Goldsmith went on to collaborate with many great filmmakers throughout his career, including Creator/RobertWise (''TheSandPebbles'', ''Film/StarTrekTheMotionPicture''), Creator/HowardHawks (''Rio Lobo''), Creator/OttoPreminger (''Film/InHarmsWay''), Creator/RomanPolanski (''Film/{{Chinatown}}''), Creator/StevenSpielberg / Creator/TobeHooper (''Film/{{Poltergeist}}''), and Creator/RidleyScott (''Film/{{Alien}}''). But his most fruitful collaboration was arguably that with Franklin Schaffner (for whom Goldsmith scored ''Film/PlanetOfTheApes1968'', ''Film/{{Patton}}'' and ''{{Film/Papillon}}'').
