MazingerZ/{{Tropes A To H}} | MazingerZ/{{Tropes I To P}} | '''Tropes Q To Z'''

----

!!!''Anime/MazingerZ'' provides examples of the following tropes:

* RadialAssKicking: Although the anime used a MonsterOfTheWeek approach most of time, in the original manga Dr. Hell was smart enough to send a lot Mechanical Beasts at once, and Kouji constantly found himself in the center of a ring of enemies. It also happened a lot in the movies (''Mazinger-Z vs Manga/{{Devilman}}'' and ''Mazinger-Z vs Great General of Darkness'').
** In the first ''Anime/{{Mazinkaiser}}'' Ova Mazinger-Z and ''Anime/GreatMazinger'' were surrounded by an army of Mechanical Beasts, and [[BashBrothers Kouji and Tetsuya]] fought them BackToBackBadasses style.
* RammingAlwaysWorks: A Kouji's favored tactic when he is battling flying fortress is ramming through them, destroying and blowing up so much as he is able before using one of Mazinger's stronger attacks to shoot the airship off the sky.
* RazorWings: Mazinger Z has the Scramble Cutter, an attack in which Kouji uses his Jet Scrambler's wings to slice into the enemy.
* RealityEnsues:
** In the first chapter/episode, Kouji did not thought that FallingIntoTheCockpit of a [[HumongousMecha huge, dangerous and powerful war machine]] that he has absolutely no idea of how handling was a bad idea. Needless to say, it was a bad idea. He trashed half city because he kept punching random buttons in order to figure out how driving the damned thing (bonus points for playing baseball with cars -with the driver inside- and smashing down a school), and when Sayaka showed up he almost cried because someone had come to save him. In the anime it was not SO bad, but he still: nearly got his head cut off by the cockpit glass shield; blew up his grandfather's manor and remodelated part of the landscape; and almost stomped Shiro -his little brother, who had warned him it was not a good idea- flat.
** It turns out that, when two HumongousMecha duel in a city, NoEndorHolocaust does not happens. Actually, buildings crumble down and cacht fire, and people dies. And the survivors tend to blame to whoever they can get their hands on. Including the heroes.
** Kouji and Sayaka were a BattleCouple whose BelligerentSexualTension made they were highly ineffectual in battle. TheDragon Baron Ashura exploited this in an episode where Kouji got badly injured because he got a ''serious'' fight with Sayaka and she refused to sortie.
** In episode 48 Boss cajoles Prof. Yumi assistants in building him a giant robot with scraps. He wanted a mecha was more powerful than Mazinger-Z itself. What he got instead was a {{Deconstruction}} of the HumongousMecha: Boss Borot is goofy-looking, slow, clumsy, heavy, breaks easily, if it falls over it takes ages to stand up again, it lacks awesome weapons (Boss asked if it would have a RocketPunch and Prof. Moremori's reply was along the lines of "Are you out of your mind? It is too fragile. The fist would shatter upon impact."), and it is largely useless to anything other than cannon fodder.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: In the Ota's manga, Count Brocken delivers an EPIC one to Dr. Hell. During the final battle Hell ordered Count Brocken go and battle Mazinger... in spite of Brocken was a normal-sized human and he had no weapons to take down a HumongousMecha! Brocken reluctantly agrees... but before leaving he tells EXACTLY what he thinks of Hell, calling him out on all his failures and flaws, blaming him for their defeats, bitterly stating he does not care his troops risk their lives everyday, and making very clear he served Hell out of gratitude -for saving his life- but he never wanted working for such an inept. Then he announces if he survives he will return to Germany before leaving to fight as Hell threw a fit. It was a CrowningMomentOfAwesome for Brocken.
* RedIsHeroic: Kouji wears a dark-red LatexSpaceSuit.
* RedShirt: In the last GoNagai manga arc, the Japanese army created the Mazinger army -a squad of mass-production Mazingers- to try and defeat BigBad Dr. Hell once and for all. Since the robots needed trained pilots, several new characters were introduced -like the blonde twins Lori and Loru. However, as Kouji was performing test flights with the [[MidSeasonUpgrade Jet Scrander]], Dr. Hell threw a ''massive'' attack involving several mobile fortresses and several dozens of [[{{Robeast}} Mechanical Beasts]]. Main character, LoveInterest and BattleCouple Sayaka Yumi and the Mazinger army flew to meet the Hell's army. Only one of them survived, and you will never guess who. [[spoiler:Sayaka.]]
** Loru and Lori also showed up in Anime/{{Mazinkaiser}}, repeating their RedShirt roles. They died in the first battle that they took active part in.
** RedShirtArmy
* ReforgedIntoAMinion: This is Dr. Hell's favorite trick. This is how he got himself his CoDragons. He found Brocken bleeding to death on the ground and turn him into a headless {{Cyborg}}. While exploring the underground mazes of Bardos he found two mummified bodies. One half of each body was crushed under rocks. So he sewed the intact halves together, relived it like a {{Cyborg}} with a mechanized brain and named it Ashura. And his {{Mook}}s? He -or his henchmen- killed people and he turned the corpses into cybernetic slaves programmed to serve him. Now you know what happened to all people died in the battles between Mazinger-Z and Hell's Mechanical Beasts.
* RefusalOfTheCall: Kouji JumpedAtTheCall in the original series. In the first timeline seen in ''ShinMazingerZero'', he refused the call and we got to see the outcome. It was not pretty (unless your definition of pretty includes the planet scorched away and the humanity wiped out [[spoiler:by Mazinger-Z]]).
* RelationshipUpgrade: The moment [[IdiotHero Kouji]] [[BattleCouple and]] [[{{Tsundere}} Sayaka]] become an item varies between adaptations, but in the GosakuOta alternate manga, it happened when [[FirstKiss they kissed]]ight before Kouji sortied to fight a hopeless battle against the Mykene Empire army.
* RestrainingBolt: It was implied in the original series and outright shown in ''ShinMazingerZero'' Mazinger Z has a RestrainingBolt: its pilot. If Mazinger lacks from a pilot controls and restrains its power, it can became a demon destroys the world. ''Anime/{{Mazinkaiser}}'' showed if the HumongousMecha is not controlled, it simply goes berserker and destroys all it meets. ''ShinMazingerZero'' elaborated further on this, showing that [[spoiler:if it is not piloted or it is piloted by someone is dominated by negative emotions (sadness, hurt, fury, hatred, helplessness...), Mazinger-Z evolves into an EldritchAbomination and destroys the world.]]
** Minerva-X restraining bolt is her circuit partner located on her midsection. Without it, she would be unable to tell friend from enemy and would go berserker.
* RevengeBeforeReason: Hell's motivation to TakeOverTheWorld is having revenge in everybody abused him or mocked him when he was young (or people he ''believes'' abused him and mocked him). Nevertheless, he was seventy-years old when the series begins, so everyone or most of them will be deceased. Yet will he let that insignificant detail stop him? [[IncrediblyLamePun Hell]], no!
* RidiculouslyHumanRobots: Minerva-X was conceived by Dr. Kabuto to fight alongside Mazinger-Z since he whole-heartedly believed a man always must fight with a strong woman by his side (he was a big defender of the BattleCouple trope). Her role was devising a battle strategy to help and support Mazinger according information Mazinger's main computer sent. Okay. However, apparently Dr. Kabuto also thought she needed being capable to think independantly, act on her own and feel emotions to carry out her mission. Not only that, but also he programmed her to love Mazinger-Z (he REALLY was a big defender of the BattleCouple trope). This is reinforced in ''ShinMazingerZero'' where she feels happiness, uncertainness, worry, jealousy, doubt, despair (to the point of telling her "heart" was breaking in one ocassion), joy, and sometimes she even blushes.
** Dr. Hell sometimes crafted human-resembling robots to infiltrate in the [[HomeBase Institute]]. Obviously he would want they behaved like humans, so it was kind of justified. However [[spoiler:Erika forgot she was a robot,]] and she constantly prayed because she felt empty and soulless.
* RidingIntoTheSunset: This kind of scenes happened plenty in the trilogy. In ''Anime/MazingerZ'' many episodes ended up with the main characters -in their robots standing against the sunset still inside their robots or driving their {{Humongous Mecha}}s back to the [[HomeBase Institute]].
** One specific episode ended up with Kouji using Mazinger's hand to -''carefully''- pick Sayaka and she calmly sitting on the behemot's hand and happily talking to Kouji as Sun set after them.
** Another episode ended up with Kouji (inside Mazinger-Z) holding Sayaka (inside Aphrodite-A) [[PietaPlagiarism bridal style]] and walking together into the sunset.
** The ''Anime/GreatMazinger vs Anime/UFORoboGrendizer'' ended up with Kouji and Duke gazing at the sunset together after the battle. Kouji even commented on it being a beautiful sunset.
* RippleEffectProofMemory: Deconstructed in ''ShinMazingerZero''. Kouji and Minerva-X are locked into a GroundhogPeggySue loop. Both of them have RippleEffectProofMemory. However Kouji's memory is faulty, and he only remembers what happened in former timelines through dreams and sudden flashbacks, and they are so vague and so random -and seldom he has them when he needs them- that they are all but useless. On the other hand, Minerva remembers with utter clarity how they failed thousands of times in averting the EndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt, and how her beloved, her friends and the whole humanity died several thousands of times because she failed.
* {{Robeast}}: Dr. Hell's Kikaiju (Mechanical Beasts), Archduke Gorgon's Youkikaijuu and Mykene's Warrior Beasts (Sentoujuu).
* RobotGirl: The Gamia sisters, [[spoiler:Erika, Lorelei...]]
* RockBeatsLaser: ''Manga/NewMazinger'' definitely subverted the trope. At the beginning Mazinger easily defeats with a sword a bunch of mechas armed with laser blades, ray guns and missile launchers... However Mazinger later faced the whole Zard army. They not even used firearms. Mazinger was loaded with clusters of missiles. He easily annihilated them.
* RocketPunch: TropeNamer and TropeMaker. "[[{{Engrish}} Roketto Paaaanchi!]]". Anytime anyone says PANCHIE instead of Punch, it's a tribute to MazingerZ...and inexplicably makes said attack more powerful.
** Depending on the iteration, the arm would come back on its own, or Kouji would have to pick it up. The standard rocket punch is eventually upgraded to the Kyoukagata Rocket Punch ("Reinforced Rocket Punch"), consisting of identical fists with stronger armor. Mazinger Z possess a technique called Daisharin Rocket Punch ("Giant Swing Rocket Punch") in which it spins its arms rapidly, building up momentum before firing off both fists in standard Rocket Punch fashion. Mazinger Z also once used a technique called "Boomerang Fist", in which the rocket punch was attached to the upper arm with a retractable chain, and the "Iron Cutter", a Rocket Punch with blades extended on the sides of the forearms.
** Being a CombatPragmatist and quick-thinker, Kouji comes up with a ton of new uses on the fly... including pulling a GiantRobotHandsSaveLives once.
** A Mechanical Beast -Dian N4- was equipped with a Rocket Punch variant. Dian used its oversized, flying hands to grab, crush and lift things, or to deflect enemy fire.
** UnbuiltTrope: The Mazinger's design also kept in mind several things later shows neglected: the mechanisms of launching AND retrieval were clearly visible, Mazinger was built to be able to use any of its weapons even though it was missing its arms (hence, Kouji was not hindered when a {{Robeast}} picked, disabled or shattered the Mazinger's fists, which happened so often like you would expect), and Prof. Yumi ensured there always was at least a pair of Mazinger's spare fists in the Institute to launch at Mazinger in case of Kouji needed them urgently.
** DeconstructedTrope: Ironically, the Trope Maker series also deconstructed the trope. In one episode, Boss cajoles Prof. Yumi's assistants to build him his own HumongousMecha (Boss Borot)... using junk. When he ''eagerly'' asked if Boss Borot will have a RocketPunch, Prof. Morimori's answer was: "Are you out of your mind? Your robot is made of SCRAP METAL. The fist would shatter upon impact."
** PowerFist: Mazinger-Z not only sported a RocketPunch, but in one episode extendable cutters were added to the forearms (the Iron Cutter). And in another episode, its fists got reinforced to make them sturdier.
** HandBlast: In one of the first episodes, Mazinger-Z shot missiles from its fingertips. This weapon was quickly ignored [[RocketPunch for obvious reasons]].
* RousseauWasRight: The "[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVevUM4RY5c Theme of Z]]" seems to think so. Kouji and his friends meet many people behave like jerks but deep down are not bad people, and BigBad Dr. Hell's reasons for being evil are he was TheWoobie when he was young. However, this series somehow manages mixing this trope with HumansAreBastards.
* RuleOfCool: GoNagai [[WordOfGod explicitly said]] that this is the reason ''Anime/MazingerZ'' (and as a result the SuperRobotGenre) is what it is. He DID his research about science and technology, but ultimately he did what he thought seemed cooler. Thus, we got a MadeOfIndestructium eighteen-meter-tall humanoid war machine [[spoiler:and EldritchAbomination]] created by a MadScientist, piloted from within, powered with AppliedPhlebotinum, equiped with [[RocketPunch punches can be thrown at the enemy]], [[EyeBeams optical weaponry]], [[BreathWeapon corrosive gusts of wind]] and [[ChestBlaster heat blasts]] capable to melt at seconds a monster made of metal, capable to [[IfItSwimsItFlies fly, swim]] and to withstand a nuclear blast and be dunked in magma for a short while, and [[MonsterOfTheWeek constantly fights]] robotical gladiators capable to [[ShockAndAwe shot lightning bolts]] and make 3-D mirages in thin air without a screen, flying medieval knights, whales loaded with nukes, three-headed dragons, giant crabs capable to set off earthquakes, TransformingMecha capable turning into giant landmines, {{Ninja}}s, archerians, snipers and humanoids capable fly at Match 6 speed. And that is without getting into the HomeBase equipped with a BeehiveBarrier, the zombie cyborg {{Mook}}s, the [[AbusivePrecursors ancient civilizations]] capable to [[LostTechnology build superweapons]], one of the CoDragons that is a half-tiger cyborg, or the SuperVillainLair that in reality is a humongous HumongousMecha disguised like an IslandBase.
* RuleOfThree: The Mazinger series used this trope over and again, starting with the fact of the original series formed a trilogy. The titular HumongousMecha is a CombiningMecha formed by three parts: Mazinger-Z, the Hover Pilder and the Jet Scrander. The Photon Atomic Power Research Institute is protected by three HumongousMecha: Mazinger-Z, Aphrodite-A and Boss Borot. Throughout the series three {{FemBot}}s show up: Aphrodite A, Minerva-X and Diana-A. Prof. Yumi is aided by three scientists (Profs. Morimori, Sewashi and Nossori). The Boss' gang is formed by three members: Boss, Nuke and Mucha. Dr. Hell never had more than three CoDragons at once, and several times he sent three-mecha teams to take down his enemies (Aeros B1, B2 and B3; Megaron P1, P2 and P3). Baron Ashura kidnapped three workers of the Institute in one episode (Kasuya, Kata and Yokoi). A Mechanical Beast could split in three parts could act and attack independiently...
* SacrificialLamb: [[spoiler: "MORIMORI-HAKASEEEEEEEEE!!!!"]]
* SadisticChoice: It happened many times. Often Baron Ashura held someone hostage and threatened with to kill him or her if Kouji did not surrender, but there were different instances:
** In episode 17, Dr. Hell crafted a Mechanical Beast could set earthquakes off. After using it to bring down several Japanese cities, Baron Ashura threatened with obliterating Tokyo unless Dr. Hell was appointed director of Photonic Research Institute. If the heroes gave in, Dr. Hell would have full and unopposed access and control to the lodes the [[{{Unobtainium}} Japanium]] was extracted from and plans to build his own [[PhlebotinumBattery Photon Atomic engines]], and nobody would be able to stop him from [[TakeOverTheWorld taking over the world]]. If they did not agree, Tokyo would become a giant hole in the ground.
** In episode 18, a Mechanical Monster cuts a passenger ship in half. A woman reaches a lifeboat but her mother has been caught in one of the whirlpools formed by the sinking ship. If she stays away, her mother will die. If she comes closer, maybe both of them will die. At the end [[spoiler:her mother chose for her. She shoved the boat away her. She drowned, but she managed to save her daughter's life.]]
** In episode 31, Dr. Hell kidnapped three men, hypnotized them in piloting three of his Mechanical Beasts and ordered them to attack Mazinger-Z. Thus, Kouji found himself severely limited, since if he attacked full-force, the prisoners could die.
** In episode 61, Lorelei, a little girl his little brother was infatuated with, fused with a {{Robeast}} and challenged Mazinger-Z. She could not be split from the robot, and if Kouji fought, he would kill her and would break his brother's heart. [[spoiler: Finally Kouji had to fight, and Lorelei died.]]
* SadlyMythtaken: This series and ''Anime/MazingerZ'' and another series of the franchise (''Anime/GreatMazinger'', ''ZMazinger'', ''Anime/ShinMazinger'') did this with the Greek myths.
** In the original myths Hades was the God of Underworld, his default shape was humanoid (but like all Greek deities he was a shape-shifter), and even though he was not exactly a nice guy, he was not worse than his relatives. In the Mazinverse he is a GodOfEvil whose (unchangeable) shape is that of a giant being of fire and wishes conquering the surface world.
** ZMazinger is worse in that regard: the Greek gods were {{Sufficiently Advanced Alien}}s that ancient Greeks mistook for gods, Zeus was a rebel turned on their comrades to protect the humans, and Mazinger was his own HumongousMecha.
** Again in ''ShinMazinger'' Zeus shows up but he is way different of the myth -let's say his severed hand is used to build the God Scrander-, and Hades is again a flaming, humongous GodofEvil.
* SayMyName: "NO! KOUJIIIIIII!!!" "Sayaka... SAYAKA!!!!!!!!!" Kouji and Sayaka often yelled each other's name [[BattleCouple when one of them was in danger]]... or when they were pissed off at each other... [[BelligerentSexualTension which happened often]] since they were the prototype of couple formed by an IdiotHero and a {{Tsundere}}.
* ScoobyDooHoax: In one anime episode, the heroes got reports of a huge, aquatic monster living on a chain of lakes near from Mount Fuji. When Kouji went to investigate to the site, a witch appeared all of sudden and warned him the lake monster would curse him if he did not leave. That woman had been scaring away whoever came to investigate the monster sightings. It did not take long for Kouji to discover [[spoiler:that witch was Baron Ashura in disguise and the monster was a Mechanical Beast (Granada E3). Baron Ashura was using the curse hoax to hide their activities (mining the lakebed for uranium to fabricate nuclear bombs).]]
** In one manga chapter, Kouji and his friends go to a hot springs resort. However, the area is apparently being haunted by ghosts. Boss is terrified but Kouji does not believe one word of it, so he and Sayaka set to investigate what is happening. Quickly they discover [[spoiler:the ghosts in reality are androids commanded by Count Brocken, one of the CoDragons of Dr. Hell.]]
* SculptedPhysique: [[AbusivePrecursors The Mykene]] have bodies that are part organic, part mechanic.
* SeaMonster: The Dragonosaurus from a {{Crossover}} movie. It was a very bizarre monster: its body was a amorphous, red-and-black blob with a face. Several long, snake-like creasted heads sprouted from it.
* TheSeventies: Started in 1972.
* SeventiesHair: Well, obviously. Kouji and Dr. Hell are prime examples of this.
* ShipSinking:
** Sayaka / Boss: Early on Boss was ''very'' infatuated with Sayaka who was totally smitten with Kouji. However, Sayaka's reaction during one of the finalr arcs of the manga suggests ''maybe'' Boss had one chance... but he did not take it. So he cared no longer or he valued his friendship with Kouji too for trying anything with Sayaka.
** Kouji / Erika: Erika was a enigmatic, amnesiac girl showed up one day in the [[HomeBase Institute]]. There was a certain chemistry between Koui and her... but it went nowhere since [[spoiler:it was revealed she was [[RidiculouslyHumanRobot an]] [[RobotGirl android]]. And then she got murdered.]]
* ShipTease:
** The original GoNagai ''Anime/MazingerZ'' manga had way more ShipTease between Kouji and Sayaka than the anime adaptation. Thus, when Sayaka told Kouji he was being transfered to her high-school (in the early chapters), he blushed and stated he "would look forward to it".
** And when Boss got a crush on a teacher, Kouji was glad because then he "would have no competition for Sayaka's heart".
** And then you have the HotSpringsEpisode. Kouji and Sayaka accidentally see each other naked in the springs, run away and collide with each other (they were so started they did not realize the spring was circular and they were running into circles). Kouji helped Sayaka on her feet, and after a row of mutual apologies they bathed together, back-to-back and with [[LuminescentBlush huge blushes on their faces]]. That scene doubled like both a CMOF and a CMOH, and it was adapted in a ''Anime/ShinMazinger'' episode.
** In the anime had less teasing moments but they definitely were there, although often in the way of BelligerentSexualTension. In episode 7, Shiro is praising Boss for being the OnlySaneMan in that episode, and Boss is getting smug... until one of his goons suggest him noticing Kouji and Sayaka are walking away together. Boss got quickly angry.
** In episode 29, Kouji sees a [[{{Robeast}} Mechanical Beast]] -Grengus C3- walking from the place where Aphrodite A had gone to a while ago, and he... completely freaks out. He hops on the first bike he finds -not realizing it was not his- and drives towards the place the Beast came from, screaming "[[SayMyName SAYAKA!]]" the whole way. When he found her, she was lying on the ground, knocked out. He managed to wake her up and then he hugged her silently.
** And in episode 32 they are having their... third or fourth fight in that episode. Meanwhile, Shiro is fortune-telling and he tells "It is funny. The cards tell they are destined to be together forever."
** Episode 48, Sayaka and Boss are getting fun teasing a disgruntled Kouji at the end of the episode. Then Sayaka asked Boss going out to have lunch. Kouji flipped instantly, getting jealousy and shouting "What is going between them?"
** In episode 52 Kouji and Sayaka have their bigger fight. Kouji gets badly wounded after sortying alone, and [[DudeShesLikeInAComa Sayaka kisses him while he is sleeping in a hospital bed]]. Later Kouji is bleeding on the ground, unconscious and maybe dead and Sayaka makes an AnguishedDeclarationOfLove ("Please, don't die. I want getting married to you). Then he opens his eyes, smiles and replies he is not going to get married to a tomboy. Sayaka ''roars'' and she decides killing him for real.
** And then you have all times Sayaka got jealousy when a girl (even if she was non-human!) got close to Kouji: Minerva, Misato, Erika...
** Their last scene in episode 92 went they flying together to America, and smiling at each other.
** In the ''Mazinger-Z versus Great General or Darkness'' feature, Sayaka cried as she was listening to Kouji going through his DespairEventHorizon DramaticSitdown moment. Later Kouji and she got an AlmostKiss before his departure.
** In the GosakuOta alternate manga adapted that scene, though, they DID kiss. And it was ''[[TheBigDamnKiss glorious]]'' (they were floating in a void, and flower petals fell around them).
** In that same alternate universe, after that scene their relationship got uneasy for a while since Kouji, unsure of how dealing with it, was avoiding her, and Sayaka got saddened because he was distancing from her. However, at the final scene, [[spoiler:the group meets Kouji again and he reveals he has been turned into a cyborg due to his body becoming badly harmed during the FinalBattle. He says Sayaka he's sorry because he no longer is human...]] and her reaction was hugging him and telling she does not care, and he is still ''her'' Kouji.
** Again in that universe, Boss kissed an unconscious and bedridden Sayaka before leaving for a seemingly unwinnable battle, telling that all he could make for the girl he loved was dying like an hero.
** And in the ''Anime/GreatMazinger'' GosakuOta manga, when Kouji and Sayaka [[BackForTheFinale returned]] from America, Tetsuya teased Kouji, asking what he had done with Sayaka during their stay overseas. Kouji blushed.
** Talking about Tetsuya, there was a healthy amount of teasing between Jun and him. Jun flirting with an ObliviousToLove Tetsuya, Jun pretending a sprained ankle just so Tetsuya rubbed her foot (unfortunately it did not work like she hoped), Tetsuya returning the unwanted gifts of a StalkerWithACrush in person and warning that Jun wanted being left alone, he getting jealousy and accusing her of wanting to replace him with Kouji (and being slapped for it. Seriously, it was stupid)... And in the GoNagai manga a [[{{Robeast}} War Beast]] got Jun hostage. Cue Great Mazinger beheading the Beast with [[ArmedLegs a brutal kick]] as Tetsuya yelled she was a very special person for him.
** Teasing between Boss and both female leads (Sayaka and Jun) revolved around Boss being a StalkerWithACrush and both girls ignoring or pretending not noticing his poor attempts. However, sometimes you got them standing up to him when Kouji or Tetsuya were acting stupid.
** In ''Anime/UFORoboGrendizer'' there was a good amount of teasing between Duke and Hikaru. Many scenes featured them together, sometimes at night, invoking the ire of Hikaru's OverprotectiveDad who threatened with hanging Duke with his bare hands if he gets closer to his daughter (NotHyperbole). And in the ''UFO Robo Grendizer versus Great Mazinger'' feature, Goro teases his big sister and Duke are in love.
** There also was BelligerentSexualTension between Kouji and Maria (interesting, considering Sayaka was meant to be newest team member and Maria replaced her due to ExecutiveMeddling, filling her role). In a scene, Kouji tries to wake up an unconscious Maria using [[=CPR=]], and then Maria woke up suddenly and slapped him.
** Sayaka and Maria use to fight over Kouji in universes where they interact, like the ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWars'' games or the ''Dynamic Heroes e-manga''. In the final scene, the whole cast are giving goodbye to Duke and Maria. Then smirking Sayaka suddenly snuggles up Kouji, and Maria goes ballistic.
** In ''Anime/{{Mazinkaiser}}'' twins Loru and Lori ask Kouji if he is in love with Sayaka, and he starts stuttering.
** And in the ''Mazinkaiser'' manga, Sayaka stops the rampage of a berserk Mazinkaiser by huging the HumongousMecha with her own FemBot... Kouji felt like if a naked Sayaka was hugging him from behind -and he was naked, too-, and then he snapped out of his trance.
** The ShipTease between Kouji and Sayaka got cranked up in ''ShinMazingerZero''. At the first arc they were a couple. In the next timeline/arc, Sayaka blushes when Kouji explains he can't tell why, but he is crying because he has seen she is fine. Sayaka gets jealousy when she sees girls getting too close to Kouji, Minerva states Sayaka is irreplaceable for Kouji...
* ShipperOnDeck: Shiro ships his brother Kouji and Sayaka.
** Kouji also shipped his little brother with Lorelei... until things go FromBadToWorse.
** And Minerva-X [[http://www.onemanga.com/Shin_Mazinger_Zero/8/30/ ships Kouji/Sayaka]] in ''ShinMazingerZero''.
* ShirtlessScene: Kouji Kabuto pulled this sometimes, specially late in the series (the episode where Erika showed up comes to mind). Dr. Hell also pulled this at the end of ''Anime/{{Mazinkaiser}}'' for seemingly no reason, and despite being a very old man.
* ShootingSuperman: Whenever a human army turns on Mazinger-Z, Great Mazinger or Grendizer, they always shot round after of round of ammo in spite of they should already know conventional weaponry not even scratches them (it was kind of subverted the first time Mazinger-Z was activated in the manga. The army could not know what that HumongousMecha was made of. And in that time, the dome protected Kouji inside the cockpit was still open, so the pilot was still vulnerable. ShootingSuperman in that situation could have worked). Also, when a {{Robeast}} appears, the army insists on attacking them in spite of they should know after the first few times they are wasting ammo, men and money. It was kind of subverted in a Mazinger-Z episode, though: a squad of [[{{Mook}} Iron Masks]] surrounded Aphrodite-A and threw a hail of spears against the FemBot. They very obviously did not damage it, but they managed to slow Sayaka down (they were so many they were very distracting) what was their intention.
* ShortRangeLongRangeWeapon: Mostly it averted the trope. Usually both the Mechanical Beasts equiped with long range weapons (beams, bolts, missile launchers, machine guns) and Mazinger-Z avoided getting close each other often they had to. Some Beasts even made a point of this (Jenova M9 was a robotical snipper. Coming near the enemy would be the last thing it would do). There were exceptions: Sometimes Beasts got over-confident and got close (like Kingdam X10. When Mazinger -apparently- ran out of power and fell face-down, Kingdam dissipated its mirage trick and approached to skewer it wth its sword instead of keeping blasting the robot with lightning bolts. Bad idea). And in the original manga, Kouji prefered fighting with punches and kicks, using his robot's long-range weapons to finish their enemies off.
* ShoulderCannon: Several Mechanical Beasts were equipped with them. Examples were Winder A2 or the ninja siblings Blazas S1 and S2. Their shoulders were fitted with missile launchers.
* ShoutOut: See page for examples.
* ShowSomeLeg: The 4th ''Anime/{{Mazinkaiser}}'' OVA, as mentioned.
* SiblingRivalry: Kouji and [[spoiler:Tetsuya Tsurugi]] were a pretty tragic example. [[spoiler:Tetsuya]] was [[spoiler:adoptive son of Kenzo Kabuto's, Kouji biological father.]] When [[spoiler:Kenzo]] got reunited with Kouji in ''Anime/GreatMazinger'', [[spoiler:Tetsuya]] -who had a TON of abandonment and self-confidence issues- thought his father would forget about him now his son by blood was back. He got ''very'' jealous and argued and fought with Kouji about anything and everything, determined to prove to their father that he was the better than Kouji. Unfortunately, his jealousy and his bickering caused [[spoiler:Kenzo's death.]] He suffered a FreakOut cause it.
* SiblingTeam: Kouji and [[spoiler:his adoptive brother, Tetsuya]]. When they are actually fighting their enemy instead of each other, they are virtually unstoppable.
* SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids: In a story arc of the GosakuOta manga alternate continuity Baron Ashura manages kidnapping Kouji and tries to talking Kouji in joining him (or her. It. Whatever). When Kouji refuses, Ashura goes in a WhatIsEvil rant, stating "justice" and "peace" are only meaningless, empty words invented by people because they are too coward and weak to accept the truth (MightMakesRight according him) and protect themselves, and then he taunts Kouji telling the only thing his idealism has got him are troubles and humilliations.
* ASimplePlan: In episode 46 Dr. Hell's had a pretty simple plan: send two MechaMooks to infiltrate into the Institute and planting several nukes in Mazinger-Z's pool. Everything explodes, he wins. However that simple plan met due to his Kikaijuu and his troops running into abandoned babies, suicidal mothers, and at a point they got involved in a manhunt through a woodland.
* SinisterScythe: Several Mechanical Beasts were armed with scythes: Garada K7 (two scythe blades were mounted on its skull and they could be used like boomerangs or like weapons in hand-to-hand combat), Brutus M3 (one sctyhe replaced its right arm), Karma K5 (it was armed with a more normal-looking)...
* {{Sizeshifter}}: Several Mechanical Beasts had the ability to changing size. The first of them -Bicong O9- showed up as soon as episode 12. Subverted with Double Faizer [[spoiler:Dr. Hell's strategy was deceiving the enemy in believing Faizer was a size-shifter, but in reality they were two Beasts: a large and a tiny one.]]
* SlapSlapKiss: Koji and Sayaka. Sometimes ''literally''.
* SlasherSmile: Dr. Hell did not often smile, but when he did... His enormous Glasgow smile was deeply disturbing.
* SlidingScaleOfAnimeObscurity
* SlidingScaleOfIdealismVersusCynicism: Even though they have plenty instances of dark, cynical moments, Mazinger Z and its sequels fall firmly into the idealistic side. When push came to shove, it was through courage, guts, faith and The Power of Friendship the heroes and heroines managed to prevail.
* SmallNameBigEgo: Boss thinks he is the smartest and biggest {{Badass}} ever, the best biker around and a real ladies man, and people would ''pay'' for the chance to attend his birthday party (not joke. In episode 20 He ''tried'' to have his classmates paying for tickets. And he was shocked when all girls ran away from him screaming). Everyone else knows he is the ButtMonkey. Hence, when Kouji showed up, showing he was a real {{Badass}}, and [[BadassBiker a better biker]] and [[TroubledButCute getting all girls -especially Sayaka- crazy over him right away]], Boss understandably was not happy, and he constantly tried to showing Kouji up with very little success. He went so far to build his own -goofy-looking- HumongousMecha using metal scraps and junk from a rubbish dump, and claimed it would replace Mazinger-Z itself. Tip: It did not.
* SmallReferencePools: This is one of the few HumongousMecha shows general anime fans have heard about, at least. And depending on the country, you can make references to it expecting people will quickly catch on (in Spain it is still the most popular Super Robot show. Mention MazingerZ and nearly everyone will know what you are talking about).
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: Sayaka Yumi was the only female main character (albeit, unlike other Smurfettes, she demanded being taken seriously like her own individual) and the only recurring female character until Misato appeared in the last season. Between the bad guys, Baron Ashura may or may not count like female character. Dr. Hell mostly "hired" males (let's think of it, [[FridgeBrilliance it can be infered from his backstory he had actually come to loathe women]]), but every so often he made {{Robot Girl}}s or female androids [[spoiler:Minerva, Erika, the Gamia triplets, the robots impersonated Hitomi and Kouji and Shiro's mother...)]]
* SniperRifle: Mechanical Beast Jenova M9 was equiped with a -obviously gigantic- sniper rifle. Its ImprobableAimingSkills allowed Jenova taking full advantage of its weapon, using it to try and shoot Kouji off from an AirborneAirCraftCarrier -fortress Ghoul-, one hundred kilometres above ground.
* SnipingTheCockpit: In the Mazinger trilogy aiming for the cockpit (clearly visible in Mazinger-Z and Great Mazinger) is a common tactic constantly employed by GenreSavvy villains... and the army when the Government turns on the heroes (which also is an alarmingly common occurrence). In fact, it happened in the first Mazinger-Z manga chapter (Mazinger went on a rampage due to Kouji thinking FallingIntoTheCockpit was a good idea. Several tanks attacked Mazinger, deliberately aiming for the cockpit). And in a GreatMazinger manga episode, a Warbeast is holding Great Mazinger still as Marquis Janus orders to snipe the cockpit. However, the likewise GenreSavvy HumongousMecha builders had the cockpits specially reinforced to protect the pilot.
* TheSocialDarwinist: Baron Ashura is a type four who uses the "survival of the fitest" like an excuse/justification to make whatever he wants. In a story arc of the GosakuOta manga alternate continuity Baron Ashura manages kidnapping Kouji and tries to talking Kouji in joining him (or her. It. Whatever). When Kouji retorts he has no interest in becoming a criminal, Ashura goes in a WhatIsEvil MightMakesRight angry rant, uttering that in the nature the weak succumbs to the will of the strong and the strong survives. That is how the world always did, does and will work, and "good", "bad", "peace", "justice"... are meaningless, empty words.
* SpeechImpairedAnimal: Bakarasu was a raven ("Bakarasu" roughly means "Dumb crow") Boss and his gang used as a lookout or a messenger. In return, Bakarasu mocked Boss, annoyed him and drove him mad. Bakarasu strangely could talk -and laugh, usually at Boss-, and theoretically it worked alongside Boss, Nuke and Mucha, but in reality it did whatever it pleased. It only had one appearance in ''MazingerZ'' (episode 69), but he showed up in several ''GreatMazinger'' episodes.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS (Notable for managing to largely ''avoid'' this, outside the twin blonde research assistants. Rori, Loli, Lori, Roli? Roru, Lolu, Rolu, Loru, or possibly Roll? ''Nobody'' knows for sure.)
* SpinAttack: A variant. Mazinger Z possess a technique called Daisharin Rocket Punch ("Giant Swing Rocket Punch"). Rather spinning its whole body, the HumongousMecha spins its arms rapidly, building up momentum before firing off both fists in standard RocketPunch fashion.
** Several Mechanical Beasts had spin attacks: Goronko S2 spun around and then rammed the enemy; Spartan K5 whirled its trident very, very rapidly to create a twister capable pick even a HumongousMecha; Balkan P5 expelled air out of ducts all over its legs and spun around to wrap itself into a tornado; Grengus C3 wrapped its enemy in chains and then it spun around, dragging its enemy with it before slamming it in the ground...
* SpotTheImposter: In a episode Dr. Hell fabricated a robot seemed just like Prof. Yumi. However it was quickly identified by Sayaka when she noticed the imposter's nails were black. Dr. Hell used that strategy more times, creating a robot looked right like a secondary character and even going as far as [[spoiler:building a robot resembled TheHero Kouji.]] They also were spotted sooner or later.
** That plot was partially reused in a ''Anime/{{Mazinkaiser}}'' episode. TheDragon Baron Ashura kidnapped Prof. Yumi and disguised like him. Sayaka suspected from him nearly right away, though, because he tossed into a trash bin a birthday gift, and she told her father would never do that.
* StacysMom: Misato, Boss' cousin. She is a professional copter pilot in her early twenties and all male teens (including TheHero Kouji) other than her cousin are infatuated with her. She also showed up in one of the manga versions of ''Anime/GreatMazinger'', and Tetsuya also felt attracted to her.
* StarcrossedLovers: Shiro and Lorelei. Lorelei was [[spoiler:a RobotGirl built by a scientist wanted to prove he was better than Dr. Kabuto, builder of Mazinger-Z. He built an HumongousMecha -Rhine X1-, and a RobotGirl -Lorelei- was meant to fuse with it to make it work. When her father got a fatal wound, he confessed the truth to her and pleaded her to defeat Mazinger. Determined to fullfil her father's last will, she merged with Rhine and challenged Mazinger to a death match. Kouji was forced to fight and kill her.]] Shiro was devastated after that.
** Minerva-X and Mazinger-Z itself also are an example. Minerva-X was a FemBot designed by Dr. Kabuto especifically to be Mazinger-Z's BattleCouple. Unlike Mazinger, though, she was a robot capable to think and feel emotions like an human being, and she was in love with Mazinger-Z. However, Dr. Kabuto never got around to build it. Unfortunately, Dr. Hell got his hands on the plans and built her to destroy Mazinger-Z. However, Minerva-X got rid from his control and refused fighting Mazinger-Z, so he decided to destroy her. Their condition of StarCrossedLovers not only comes from this but also it comes from Mazinger-Z IS a machine and it can not reciprocate her feelings.
* TheStarscream: Two Dr. Hell's servants fit the trope: Viscount Pygman and Archduke Gorgon. The former disobeyed orders the whole time and finally betrayed his creator, [[AllYourBaseAreBelongToUs taking over the Institute]] on his own and refusing handed over the control of it to Hell (He earns brownie points, though, for being the only Dr. Hell's henchmen showed some spine in front of Gorgon). The later allied himself with Hell but spend the whole time insulting and scorning Hell and his henchmen, undermining his authority and scheming to overthrow Hell at the first chance. [[spoiler:He was sucessful]]. Gorgon subverted the trope slightly since he was not planning replacing Hell with himself but with [[spoiler:[[Anime/GreatMazinger the Emperor of Darkness]].]]
* StartOfDarkness: Hell's mind was already unstable and unsound cause his upbringing. However, when he found out the woman he loved was in love with another man [[spoiler:Juzo Kabuto, future builder of Mazinger-Z and [[TheHero Kouji's]] grandfather]], he... [[LoveMakesYouCrazy flipped out]] and [[LoveMakesYouEvil attempted to murder his perceived rival]]. It then went FromBadToWorse. Shortly after he tried helping someone... and he got the crap beaten out of him for it. Later he was crawling back towards his home, bruised and blood-stained, muttering "Mediocre imbeciles! You don't deserve being alive! One day I'll purge the world off all of you! And then everybody will have kneel before me". When you heard his words and saw his utterly mad stare you realized he had snapped out completely and Dr. Hell had been born.
* TheStationsOfTheCanon: Dr. Hell's surfacing, Dr. Kabuto's death, Kouji finding Mazinger and trying piloting for first time with disastrous results, Sayaka showing up to save him from himself, Baron Ashura attacking the institute, first meeting with Boss... To spice things up, some Fanfic writers try blending or playing out of order several minor events and battles.
* StayInTheKitchen: A good part of the SlapSlapKiss comes from Koji saying this and Sayaka flipping the middle finger at him. Or better said, giving him an ArmorPiercingSlap.
** A classic instance is episode 8, when Kouji voted against a proposal to turn Aphrodite-A into a combat-capable mecha, telling he needed no help. And when Sayaka argued with him he told she was an idiot did not get that girls must not fight.
* StockNinjaWeaponry: Blazas S1 and S2 -two Mechanical Beast showed up in episode 46- used shuriken and kunai like weapons.
* StockShoutOuts: This series gave us the Super Alloy Z and the RocketPunch. They pop up frequently, especially the second, which has quickly became THE most famous and most ubiquitous SuperRobot weapon, showing up in all kind of works. Whenever a character [[CallingYourAttacks screams]] "Roketto Panchi!" it is directly referencing the TropeNamer.
** Since [[GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff Spaniards Love Mazinger-Z]], the Spanish DubNameChange variant ("¡Puños Fuera!", meaning "Fists Out!") has become so omnipresent that it has been used in movie titles. And when a foreign work features a RocketPunch, whatever attack name that the character screams is automatically replaced by "¡Puños Fuera!" more often than not.
* StopHelpingMe: Several times Kouji complained Sayaka she was getting in the way, hindering him and making more harm than good. And even though he can have a point, he could telling it in a more tactful way... It was hilariously GenderFlipped with Jun and Boss later. Jun would be fighting, and Boss got in the way constantly in order to "help".
* StormingTheCastle: Kouji, Sayaka and Boss stormed the Island of Hell, supported by the Japanese army, in the FinalBattle.
* StupidJetpackHitler: Dr. Hell started out as a weapons researcher for the Nazis.
* SufficientlyAdvancedAlien: The enemies of a ''[[ZMazinger spin-off]]'' were aliens so powerful and so technologically advanced they were mistaken by gods in the past.
* SuperSpit: Many Beasts could spit gallons of acid, poison and other corrosive fluids. Sometimes it was a kind of gluey substance to paralyze or hinder the enemy. Examples abound: Mechanical Beasts Baras-K9, Gusios-β3...
* SuperPrototype: averted. Mazinger Z was lacking a lot of its special features at first and regularly had to be upgraded and re-outfitted with new equipment. As it turns out, the ''real'' SuperPrototype is [=MazinKaiser=]...
** Averted throughout the OVA, though. [[spoiler: Shin Great Mazinger]] and Mazinkaiser are explicitly stated to be the finished models, their predecessors are the prototypes.
* SuperRobot: May not have started, but certainly defined and named the genre.
* VideoGame/SuperRobotWars: '''All''' of them. The only ones that may ''technically'' not count are the ones that do or will use the reimaginings: ''{{Mazinkaiser}}'', ''ShinMazinger'', or ''MazinkaiserSKL''. However, ''[[VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsUX UX]]'', in which the latter debuts, marks the first time Kouji himself has not appeared in a ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWars'' game.
** In a number of ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWars'' games you can convince Minerva X to join your team. At least [[VideoGame/SuperRobotWars2 2, 2G]], [[VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsCompact Compact 1]], and [[VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsAdvance Advance]], although in 2 she only joins temporarily and in Advance she 'dies' and you have to assign an actual pilot to the robot.
* SuperVillainLair: Dr. Hell had TWO: the island of Bardos, where he found the Mykene HumongousMecha, and the -properly named- island of Hell, an islet near from Japan where he moved to at the second half of the series. His first base looked like a deserted island, covered with ancient, half-crumbled ruins, but his second fortress seemed less ordinary, featuring a mountain with four gigantic faces carved on the slopes. Nonetheless, both of them included:
** an ElaborateUndergroundBase
** a throne room for Hell
** a war room to argue strategies
** quarters for his {{CoDragons}}
** barracks for his {{Mook}}s
** several hangars for his {{Cool Ship}}s, {{Cool Airship}}s and HumongousMecha
** InsecuritySystem for HumongousMecha was absolutely useless against Mazinger-Z
** transmision equipment to broadcast to every TV set in the world
** Hell's MadScientistLaboratory where he fabricated his weapons, mechas and cyborgs
** several training camps for his {{Robeast}}s and {{Mook}}s
** And in the original manga, his second fortress could transform into a humongous HumongousMecha. And in the GosakuOta episodes, he could launch it off to the space and blow it up (in case his enemies invaded his island and he could not win).
* SurroundedByIdiots: Dr. Hell often feels like this -and rightfully so-. When he was young it was because he thought he was smarter than anybody, but now it is because his minions are, well, stupids. In an episode he invokes the trope almost word by word. His CoDragons have been fighting for the whole episode, even when they were supposed to engage the enemy. At the beginning he had tried to stop them and force them to cooperate, but it did not work. So during their latest fight he is -unsuccesfully- trying to ignore them as he has dinner, and he grumbles he is surrounded by idiots.
** '''Dr. Hell''': Why, oh, why such a genius as myself is surrounded by idiots?
* SympathyForTheDevil: Played with in the GosakuOta manga version. The main characters go over Dr. Kabuto's notes to try to ascertain what are the ''[[Anime/GreatMazinger Mykene Warrior Monsters]]'' and where they come from. After learning [[BeneathTheEarth they were a civilization was forced to live underground during milennia]], Misato feels genuinely sorry about them. Kouji has nothing of it, thought, and he rebukes their sufferings don't give them right to kill innocent people.
* TagalongKid: Shirou.
* TailSlap: Several Mechanical Beasts (such like Danchel or Deltan V8) were endowed with powerful tails, capable to hit or coil around the enemy and strangle it. Often they had some weapon attached or shot missiles, acid or poison.
* TakeOverTheWorld: According his Backstory revealed in one of the manga versions, Dr. Hell was abused and belittled by everyone when he was a child until his mind snapped and he decided he wanted to make all pay: he would purge the world off idiots and force everybody to bow down to him. During the rise of Hitler, he realized if he took over the world he COULD do just that. Over ten years after the World War II he finally found the means [[LostTechnology as he researched several ancient ruins]].
* TapOnTheHead: Boss used the "low blow to the solar plexus" variant with [[spoiler:Kouji]] to try to avoid he [[spoiler:fought against the Mykene Warrior Monsters in the last episode.]] Maybe it was used in a more realistic way than usual, though, since when [[spoiler:Kouji]] regained consciousness shortly after, he seemed being in pain.
* ATasteOfPower: In the first dozen of episodes, the [[{{Robeast}} Mechanical Beasts]] barely can even scratch Mazinger-Z, let alone threatening it. They were too weak, their weapons not powerful enough, and the battle was over as soon as TheHero Kouji managed connecting several consecutive attacks. The only reason for Kouji struggled during that time was [[FallingIntoTheCockpit he was still trying to learn how piloting his HumongousMecha]]. When Spartan K5 -a {{Gladiator}}-alike Beast single-handily beat the crap out of Mazinger as easily shrugging all its weapons off- showed up in episode 14, it was a wake-up call of playtime was over and BigBad Dr. Hell was at last stepping up his challenge.
* TheTeamNormal: Boss and his gang. They had no special abilites and they were not the offspring of some scientist, and as the heroes had cool {{Humongous Mecha}}s MadeOfIndestructium and loaded with dozens of awesome weapons (RocketPunch, ChestBlaster, EyeBeam, TorpedoTits, BFS, ArmedLegs...) [[MidSeasonUpgrade got periodical upgrades]], they controlled a HumongousMecha made with garbage, had no weapons, was quite fragile and was easily riped apart in every fight.
* TechnicianVersusPerformer: Koji and Tetsuya have distinct ways to pilot their respective HumongousMecha. Kouji is the Technician, who uses his weapons in a normal way -such as Mazinger's Photon-powered EyeBeam as a long range weapon-, combining them with pure brute force and CombatPragmatism. Tetsuya is the performer who combines his own CombatPragmatism by using Great's wide arsenal of weapons in an unorthodox way -such as shooting Thunder Break with both weapons or using it to turning his swords into Lightning rods, his surprisingly weird way of handling swords, or covering Great with [[ChestBlaster Breast Burn]] heat energy (a movement which later would be adapted in ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsAlpha'' and turned into ''{{Mazinkaiser}}s'' Kaiser Nova).
* TechnicolorNinjas: [[http://garada.net/mediashare/o5-6e3kjgy0boqeow3l7uukwa5i2kl1s0-pre.jpg Blazas S1 and S2]] were garishly-colored; still they were able to infiltrating into the Institute and planting bombs without being seen or heard.
* TelescopingRobot: Mazinger-Z has two extendable, razor-sharp cutters (properly named Iron Cutter) embedded into its forearms, several drilling missiles stuck into its upper arms, and its belly has a hatch to launch MORE missiles from. And then you have his MidSeasonUpgrade JetPack, Scrander Jet, which can shoot shurikens. ''Manga/NewMazinger'' (an one-shot story set on an alternative universe) went deeper in this trope, and in one scene, many hatches opened up all over its body, revealing dozens of missiles underneath.
* TechnoBabble: Plenty instances of it, how you would expect from a HumongousMecha Mechashow:
** Early on in the series it is explained that [[AppliedPhlebotinum Photon Atomic (Koushiryoku) power]] is obtained in the process to transform [[{{Unobtainium}} Japanium]] in Alloy Z.
** In the manga version of the battle versus Jinray S1, [[TheProfessor Professor Yumi]] explains Jinray's electrical discharges generate an electro-magnetic field around Mazinger that disrupts the power feeding Mazinger and breaks down the Pilder's controls. He also warns that, should the electrical tension increase too much, Mazinger's mechanisms would melt.
** In the episode in which Minerva-X appeared, Professor Yumi theorized that she was made of super-steel.
** ''ShinMazingerZero'':
*** ''Mazinger'' is acronym for Multidimensional Automaton Zillion Infinity Neural Generative Exterminate Reverter
*** And in chapter 6:
-->'''Sayaka:''' Aphrodite A Immediate activation! number 1. Number 2. Number 3. Check! All Green! Retention bolt, begin release!
* ThatsNoMoon: A nearly literal example. Salude, Baron Ashura's submarine fortress was simultaneously a CoolShip and an IslandBase camouflaged itself like a real island (it had two parts: the lower part was a submarine HomeBase and the upper part was an artificial island. Both parts were interconected via a tube. When Salude surfaced, only the upper part was visible). The first time Kouji saw it, he exclaimed: "That is not a island!"
* ThematicRoguesGallery: Dr. Hell's Mechanical Beasts.
* TheoryOfNarrativeCausality: Lampshaded sometimes. In one story Boss reassures his friends -Nuke and Mucha-, as facing a dire situation, telling that they will not die because they are the PluckyComicRelief characters, and joke characters never die.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Dr. Hell occasionally refers to himself in third person when he is ranting, angry or uttering {{BadassBoast}}s. GoNagai's ''GreatMazinger'' manga offers a good example:
-->'''Dr.Hell''': "Destroy me? How arrogant. A tiny island country intends to destroy Dr. Hell, the future ruler of the world? Alright! I swear I shall crush Japan in merely ten days! And the whole world shall witness the true power of Dr. Hell!"
* ThisIsADrill: Several robotical foes (such like Danchel and Stronger T4) were endowed with weaponized drills. As well, one of the weapons of Mazinger Z are drilling missiles located in its upper arms.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: Whenever Kouji said this sentence you knew he was REAL angry, and someone was going to be summarily trashed in the near future. A good example was in the manga, after he learnt Dr. Hell had created a weapon was able to nullify gravity... and had used one whole city like subject test. Another two memorable instances happened in the ''{{Mazinkaiser}}'' movie (Mazinkaiser vs Great General of Darkness: at the beginning, after Lori and Loru's [[spoiler:HeroicSacrifice]], and at the end, right before he [[spoiler:absolutely destroys the Mykene empire army]]:
--> '''Kouji:''' Because you... Many people has died... THAT IS UNFORGIVABLE! [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiZwGqhTP5I]]
** This sentence was also used fairly often by Baron Ashura (to Kouji and his friends after being defeated) and Dr. Hell (to Ashura after his servant botched still another operation).
* ThoseTwoGuys: Nuke and Mucha, best friends and tag-alongs of Boss long before the start of the series. Before meeting and befriending Kouji they were two average, ordinary high-school students, but after meeting him their daily life includes battles between {{Humongous Mecha}}s, fighting or fleeing from armies of {{Mook}}s, sneaking into enemy secret bases and basically surviving. Often they get -unwillingly- dragged -by Boss- in Kouji's adventures, and they provide with the rational counterpoint -and lampshading- to any stupid stunt Boss has come up with. Later in the series Boss got himself a Made Of Junk HumongousMecha and required that they helped him to pilot it -much to their chagrin-. In ''Anime/GreatMazinger'' their situation did not get more normal, that with the monsters from BeneathTheEarth invading the surface world bit and Boss demanding they help him to fight them like part of an absolutely helpless plan to woo {{Tsundere}} Jun Hono -LoveInterest of TheHero Tetsuya, whom Boss can not stand-. In other series (''Anime/{{Mazinkaiser}}'', ''Anime/ShinMazinger'', ''ShinMazingerZero'') of the ''{{Mazinger}}'' franchise they are given the same role.
* TheThreeFacesOfAdam: Shiro (a kid who whises growing up like his brother and is constantly trying learning and experimenting with new stuff) is the hunter, TheHero Kouji is naturally the lord and Prof. Yumi (who is TheProfessor and the mentor of and ParentalSubstitute of Kouji)is the prophet.
** And if you look to the three male leads of the trilogy, Duke (the older, more mature and more world-worn) is the prophet, Tetsuya (the most skilful and grimmest of them) is the lord and Kouji is the hunter.
* TheThreeFacesOfEve:
** Jealous, temperamental, nagging, tantrum-prone Sayaka Yumi is the child
** Mature, calm, collected, professional Misato is the wife
** And beautiful, sensual and alluring Erika is the seductress (who, actually, tempted TheHero)
* TheUnfought: The Emperor of Darkness was BiggerBad from ''Anime/MazingerZ'' and BigBad from ''Anime/GreatMazinger''. The second series ended up with the heroes [[spoiler:killing his CoDragons and annihilating a large part of his army,]] but they never fought him. Outside of an episode of one of the manga versions of ''Anime/UFORoboGrendizer'' and the ''Videogame/SuperRobotWarsAlpha'' he has never been fought (and in ''Anime/{{Mazinkaiser}}'' he is not even mentioned).
* ThouShallNotKill: Played with. Kouji gets forced to kill an [[{{Mook}} Iron]] [[{{Cyborg}} Mask]] in one of the first chapters of the original manga and he freaks out about it. Later he is wondering, worried, if he is a murderer now. A secondary character reminds him he just was defending himself.
* ThoseWackyNazis: Count Brocken and his {{Mooks}}.
* ToTheBatpole: Mazinger-Z emerges from a hangar beneath a nearby swimming pool
* ToeiAnimation: It made the 1972 anime and its sequels.
* TokyoIsTheCenterOfTheUniverse: Subverted. For start with, the Headquarters of the good guys are not in Tokyo but in the vicinity of Mount Fuji. Therefore, the enemy feels not compelled to exclusively target and attack Tokyo. A lot of Japanese cities are destroyed, ships are sunk in ocean, and often Mazinger-Z needed fighting in open sea (and in one chapter of one of the manga alternate continuities, it got deployed in another country). And in the Mazinger Z versus Great General of Darkness movie, the Mykene army struck New York, Paris, Londres and Moscow before striking Tokyo.
* TomatoInTheMirror: Erika was an amnesiac girl barely remembered her name. She felt an odd, devastating inner emptiness, but in spite of it she thought she was a normal girl. And then [[spoiler:Baron Ashura appeared and revealed that in reality she was a human-looking robot built to murder Kouji Kabuto.]] She freaked out considerably -and understandably-, and she refused believing it.
** Lorelei thought she was an average, little girl with a slightly eccentric and weird father. And then she found out that [[spoiler:she was in reality a RobotGirl, and the key component to start a HumongousMecha.]]
* TonightSomeoneDies: Famously subverted in the episode titled ''Kouji Kabuto Dies In Lava!''. Kouji [[spoiler:did not die.]]
* TooDumbToLive: Several characters of the series (including the main characters) get at least one occasion where they seem determined to off themselves. The civilians thought it was a good idea remaining near from the place where a HumongousMecha and a {{Robeast}} were fighting, or blamed the heroes for the destruction and deaths Hell and his lackeys were responsible of, or pressed the Government to yield EVERY TIME Dr. Hell was blackmailing it are good examples. A good, specific example is Yuri, BrattyHalfPint Sayaka's cousin: Let's go over the facts, Yuri. You are a disabled, little IllGirl can't run or move quickly because you need a wheelchair. You know there is a giant robot in the city, rolling over buildings AND people. Kouji has gone out to stop it after telling you very clearly you must stay in home because you are safer. Still do you insist on leaving the home and go to where the giant robots are fighting because you have a crush on Kouji and you want to see him? Okay, you can leave. After all, what can possibly go wrong?
* TorpedoTits: Aphrodite A's "Oppai Missiles".
* TransformationNameAnnouncement: Kouji always yelled "Majin Go!" when he docked the Pilder in and started Mazinger.
* TransformingMecha: In ''ShinMazinger'', Mazinger Z is able to transform into a ''giant fist''.
* TrickedOutShoes: In episode 18, Mazinger-Z's feet got modified to include rockets allowed the HumongousMecha move underwater.
* TropeCodifier / GenrePopularizer: When people talk about any SuperRobot, this is what they inevitably measure it against.
** TropeMaker: [[{{Gigantor}} Tetsujin #28]] may have been the UrExample, but there were very few imitators after ''Mazinger'' rolls around. All the SuperRobot standbys are from this show: a HotBlooded IdiotHero, the [[RocketPunch ROCKETTO PAUNCH]], CallingYourAttacks in {{Engrish}}, EyeBeams, a ChestBlaster, and many more.
* {{Tsundere}}: Sayaka, one of the first anime ''lead'' girls to have these qualities. Her type varies: she's a Type A in the original TV series, but switches to Type B in the manga and in ''Mazinkaiser''.
** She seems to have gone back to Type A in the Shin Mazinger Zero manga, but when she sees Minerva X and Kouji together...
* {{TwoFaced}}: Baron Ashura.
* UglyGuyHotWife: In episode 89 we meet [[spoiler:an impersonator of]] Kouji and Shiro's mother. In episode 92 we meet Kouji and Shiro's [[spoiler:supposedly]] late father. His wife was definitely beautiful. He... not so much. Although maybe he was more handsome when he was younger [[spoiler:and he was not a cyborg.]]
* UnbrokenVigil: Sayaka to Kouji in episode 52, as he was hospitalized after being badly wounded in a battle (she was also feeling guilty, since they had got a fight before -they bicker constantly, but this time it was ''serious''- and she had refused backing in battle). And Kouji to his little brother Shiro in ''Mazinger-Z versus Great General of Darkness'' when he fell into coma after a ceiling crumbled onto him.
* UnbuiltTrope: ''MazingerZ'', while not quite the UrExample, is definitely the TropeCodifier for the SuperRobot genre. However, to a modern reader, it seems to constantly slip between an over-the-top parody, and a brutal deconstruction. The BigBad is smart enough to send the [[{{Robeast}} "Mechanical Beasts"]] in groups to attack Mazinger; the mecha, though nearly indestructible, doesn't provide much safety for the pilot inside; and the main character nearly destroys the town while he's trying to figure out how to pilot the mecha. And that's before [[WhamEpisode the villains take over a Japanese village in a very Nazi-like manner, including a systematic slaughter of the civilians that they considered "useless" and usage of the women of the village as human shields for their latest Mechanical Beast]].
* UncannyValley: The Gamia sisters were three identical [[RobotGirl robot girls]]. Outwardly they seemed three ordinary human blonde girls... until you noticed their skin was unusually pale, their motions were eerily mechanical, their expressions were completely aloof and unchanging, they were nearly always silent and they never blinked. Anybody saw them could inmediately tell there was something seriously wrong with them... before they began punching holes in walls and shredding things with her razor-sharp hairs.
** Most of the human-looking androids Dr. Hell built were sufficiently well done to reasonably pass for humans. An exception was [[spoiler:a Kouji-alike android. That robot looked right like Kouji, but it behaved in a different way and it could not speak.]] It was pretty unsettling because he LOOKED like [[spoiler:Kouji]] but you could say something did not fit.
** [[spoiler:Lorelei]] kind of averted it. Nobody thought something was amiss with her.
* UncannyValleyGirl: In ''ShinMazingerZero'' three beautiful, tall, ponytailed, blonde triplet girls called Gamia Q1, Q2 and Q3 transferred to Kouji's high school. Given that they were gorgeous and friendly, even if they behaved in a strange fashion and looked a tad weird, all boys in class started to quickly slobber at them. In reality they were three androids (appeared for first time in the ''Anime/MazingerZ'' original manga and ''Anime/{{Mazinkaiser}}'') sent to assassin Kouji Kabuto. Seemingly Kouji bought their masquerade, but shortly after he suggested them dropping their act, and he revealed that he had suspected it all along.
* UnexplainedRecovery: At the second-to-last episode, [[spoiler:the CoolAirship where Dr. Hell was escaping got blown up.]] Whatever got left from him after that explosion surely sank in the ocean. Nonetheless he showed up again in the last season of ''Anime/GreatMazinger'', his body grafted into a HumongousMecha. One eyepatch covering his left eye was the only mark of the ordeal he had endured. Little explanation was given other than an statement of BigBad and PhysicalGod Emperor of Darkness had relived him and turned into one of his Warrior Monsters (and high commander of his army). It can may be worth mentioning many Mazinger-Z characters returned in the last episodes from the sequel, so maybe ExecutiveMeddling was involved.
* TheUnfavorite: [[spoiler:Kenzo Kabuto]] had two biological sons [[spoiler:Kouji and Shiro]] and two adoptive children (''[[Anime/GreatMazinger Tetsuya and Jun]]''). Although Tetsuya was clearly his favorite, he still showed he cared for his two blood sons. However, he got Jun completely neglected, treating her like a soldier, not making anything about her feelings of abandoment and her inner tensions, and he seldom shown he cared for her. It went so far that, before [[spoiler:[[KilledOffForReal dying]]]] after his [[spoiler:HeroicSacrifice]] he pleaded [[spoiler:Kouji]] that he treated Tetsuya like his brother and took care of [[spoiler:Shiro]]... but he did not mention Jun at all. Nonetheless, his attitude drove Jun to think she could not be dependant on someone else and to develop a very strong-willed and self-reliant personality.
* UnfinishedUntestedUsedAnyway: During a battle Kouji decided using the Jet Scrander in spite of it had not been tested yet. To be fair, it was a "If I do not use it I'll die anyways" kind of situation, and he could not wait.
* UngratefulBastard: People constantly blames Mazinger and the Photon Intitute for the destruction the battles between the Mechanical Beasts and Mazinger cause, [[TooDumbToLive apparently forgetting]] if Mazinger Z didn't exist, all of them would be dead.
* {{Unobtainium}}: Japanium. It is a rare mineral can only be found on a lode on Mount Fuji and was discovered by Proffesor Kabuto. Mazinger Z, Aphrodite A [[spoiler:and Great Mazinger]] are built with it [[spoiler: and the [[{{Robeast}}s Kikaiju]] after Dr. Hell stole a sample]]
* UnresolvedSexualTension: Kouji and Sayaka were the couple defined BelligerentSexualTension. In spite of being attracted to each other, fierce competitiveness and pride issues on both sides prevent them from reaching an understanding and being together. It was not so bad in the original manga, though. And in another manga version, they kissed when they thought Kouji was going to die. He survived, but Kouji avoided Sayaka for a while because he was still too afraid and unsecure.
* UnscientificScience: During the FinalBattle in the GosakuOta manga chapters, Mazinger-Z was thrown in a LavaPit... and it emerged unscathed. When Dr. Hell blurted out it was impossible (not even MadeOfIndestructium Mazinger-Z can endure a lava bath, let alone Made Of Flesh Kouji Kabuto), Kouji replied he had used the rockets located on Mazinger's feet to stir the lava and create an air bubble around his robot... which actually is harder to buy than the "It's NighInvulnerable and it emerged out very quickly" excuse.
* UnusualWeaponMounting: Mazinger-Z. [[EyeBeams Its optical sensors shot laser beams]], its grid-covered mouth launched gusts of corrosive wind, its horns shot a double FreezeRay, [[ChestBlaster its chest shot heat waves]], its fingers and belly shot missiles...
** And then you have Aphrodite-A introduced the TorpedoTits trope into HumongousMecha shows...
** Dr. Hell was infamous by fitting any sort of weapons on any place of the body of his [[{{Robeast}} Mechanical Beasts]]. Examples include Zaila (whose fingers fired missiles and whose horns were really drills), Brighton-J2 (those horns on its head? They are missiles), the ninja siblings Blazas S1 and S2 (missile launchers located on their shoulders and stomache), Solaris-S1 (its belt shoots a solar beam), Kajimofu-T7 (its palms shot beams and it had a missile launcher above its head), Gumbina-M5 (CombatTentacles instead of eyes)...
* UnwillingRoboticisation: All CoDragons -but Gorgon- and {{Mook}}s are {{Cyborg}}s created by Dr. Hell. He never gave someone choice in the matter or asked them if they want being turned into half-mechanical beings (and since [[spoiler:Baron Ashura and his {{Mook}}s]] were corpses he revived by using cybernetic implants they could not refuse either). And in the case of Count Brocken, in one of the manga versions he states bitterly he was grateful to Hell because he saved his life... but he never wished serving him.
* UseYourHead: Kouji -who is a full-blown CombatPragmatist- has no qualms uisng that tactic when he is fighting with Mazinger-Z. It should be justified, since he is using his {{Humongous Mecha}}'s head to ram the enemy instead of his own, but it is not, because Mazinger-Z's cockpit sits on the head of the giant robot.
* VillainTeamUp: In the ''Mazinger-Z versus Devilman'' feature, Dr. Hell and the demons collaborate to take down Kouji Kabuto and ''Manga/{{Devilman}}''. It may be subverted, since Hell used a mind-control device to enslave the demons, and he was mainly interested on taking down Mazinger-Z (he only sent some demons and Mechanical Beasts against Devilman because the demons warned him he would interfere).
** Dr. Hell also hires [[LightNovel/FullMetalPanic Gauron]] in ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsJudgment'', works with the [[MobileSuitGundam Zeon]] in ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsAlpha'' and works with the [[GoLion Galra]] [[{{Voltron}} Empire]] in ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsW''.
* VillainousBreakdown: It happened to Dr. Hell several times. The first of them happened in the THIRD episode, when he realized [[TheProfessor Juzo Kabuto]] still could surpass him and thwart his lifelong plans even after death. He destroyed all Mykene HumongousMecha he had found, declaring them being uselesss, and he very nearly gave up right then. Another memorable one happened in episode 68, when finally he saw himself unable to triumph over Kouji Kabuto. He destroyed all of his newest Beasts, and swallowing his pride, asked help to Archduke Gorgon.
* VillainsOutShopping: Several times, when the heroes infiltrated into one of the submarine fortress of Baron Ashura, he/she was taking a relaxing shower (and he/she did not appreciate being interrupted. Nobody -including the heroes, Ashura's minions and the audience- did, in fact). And often he/she was shown playing organ or drinking a glass of fine wine in his/her private chambers. Ashura could be quite laid-back when he/she wanted.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: In episode 26 secondary character Saijyo found out the hard way that ''really'' it is not a good idea hurting Kouji in front of Sayaka. Shortly after beating up Kouji he found himself in the grip of a ''HumongousMecha'' while Sayaka gave him a furious TheReasonYouSuckSpeech.
** In ''ShinMazingerZero'' Sayaka tears apart ''three'' [[{{Robeast}} Mechanical Beasts]] that were threatening Kouji in a matter of seconds, roaring the whole time. Even Kouji was frightened.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Kouji and Boss. Their first meeting consisted of Boss picking one fight with Kouji. They often bicker with each other, but they do get along rather well.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Subverted. ''Dr. Hell'' had one of these in ''ShinMazingerZero''. Can you tell FanDisservice?
* WalkingSpoiler: Everything about Kenzo [[spoiler:Kabuto]] and Archduke Gorgon.
* WarIsHell: From the opening narration from ''Manga/NewMazinger'' (an one-volume-long alternate manga version published in 1988): "A. D. 220X... Hostilities between north and south grow in fury as savage combat with new and ever more destructive weapons lays waste the once pastoral Earth. The remnants of mankind burrow deep beneath the surface. Their citadels, screened against the deadly bath of radiation, poke through the polluted soil like foul, mutant flowers. Their warriors, encased in giant combat armor against the air that once gave man life, live only to fight, and with luck, to fight again. Today, as every day, the flames of war rage in every corner of the globe. War without quarter. War without end. War for a race that has forgotten all other ways of life."
* WellDoneSonGuy: One of the reasons Sayaka from could be so prideful, impulsive and hard-headed and was so obsessed with showing off was to get some measure of praise and acknowledgement from her MarriedToTheJob, caring-but-emotionally-distant father. Unfortunately it did not work very well. For all times she risked her life, Gennosuke Yumi rarely gave praise.
* WhamEpisode: The final episode was an endless succession of shocking moments altered the status quo irremissibly: it was revealed that [[spoiler:Gorgon was actually working for someone was infinitely more powerful and most dangerous than Dr. Hell,]] Mazinger-Z was [[spoiler:utterly and easily defeated by a new enemy,]] a new and more powerful [[spoiler:Mazinger showed up, named ''Anime/GreatMazinger'']] and it was revealed [[spoiler:Kouji's father was alive.]] The Wham factor was even bigger in the movie version of that episode, when the Mykene army razed to ruins New York, London, Paris and Moscow in one single stroke before leading towards Tokyo and destroying it as well, and at the end of the movie, the prophet [[spoiler:removed his mask and revealed his real identity: Kenzo Kabuto, Kouji's father.]]
* WhamLine:
-->'''Kenzo:''' "He’s crying. My son is… My son…! [[spoiler:Kouji Kabuto…!"]]
* WhatDoesThisButtonDo: This series mixed this trope with with FallingIntoTheCockpit, and deconstructed both of them (funny and ironic, keeping in mind ''MazingerZ'' [[UnbuiltTrope was the first mecha show where the pilot fell into the cockpit]]). When Kouji sat on the Hover Pilder (the flying device controls the Super Robot) for first time, he knew absolutely nothing about piloting. His little brother suggested him maybe it was a real bad idea, and he angrily replied he only needed figuring out what each button did. So what he began pressing random buttons to ascertain that... and he nearly got himself and his brother killed. Mazinger-Z went on a rampage, destroying everything on its path, and it only stopped when Sayaka showed up and carefully explained Kouji what he had to do (after getting baffled at the thought of someone doing something SO stupid). And it was way worse in the original manga version, since Kouji activated Mazinger-Z in the middle of a big city. To be fair, though, the person had built Mazinger-Z was dead, so it was not like if Kouji could consult someone about it at the time.
* WhatISEvil?: In the manga version penned by GosakuOta, Baron Ashura [[BadassInDistress kidnaps Kouji]] and suggests him joining him/her. When Kouji states he has no interest in serving a criminal, Ashura gets indignant, and angrily utters "good" and "evil" are nothing but concepts made up by humans, and the only true rules exhist in the world are the law of the jungle and the survival of the fittest.
* WhatMeasureIsAMook: The Iron Masks and the Iron Crosses are [[spoiler: reanimated corpses turned into cyborgs]], mindless and faithfully serve Dr. Hell and his henchmen. Kouji wonders in the manga if it is right kill them.
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: Discussed. In the original manga, three [[{{Mook}} Iron Masks]] broke in the house of Kouji. During the scuffle, he learns they are [[spoiler:corpses turned into cyborg by BigBad Dr. Hell]] and they are just {{Empty Shell}}s programmed to obey. when one of them tries to convince him to die and become like them, Kouji angrily yells such a thing not even would be human. Still, Kouji doubts about killing them, even if it is in self-defense, and when finally he gets forced to, he gets shell-shocked and later he wonders if he is not a murderer now.
** Usually Kouji and his friends think nothing of obliterating a Mechanical Beast in horrific ways (ramming a fist through its chest or punching its head or limbs out, dismembering it, blowing it up to bits, melting it, turning it into a heap of corroded scrap metal...), usually treating them like unliving, unfeeling machines. However, if a Beast exhibits more traces of independant thought, they may be more reluctant to fight and even can feel sorry about destroy it (such like Spartan K5 or Jenova M9).
** Minerva-X is a complicated case. She was a HumongousMecha Dr. Kabuto designed. He programmed her to think independantly, acting on her own and even feeling emotions (including love). Everybody treated her like if she was alive and was a person, and [[spoiler:mourned her death]]. And in ''ShinMazingerZero'' she has been traveling through time and dimensions, and we learn she ''is'' the original Minerva, so she MUST own an soul! Can it be said she is non-human, then? the implications are... unfortunate or mind-boggling.
** Human-looking robots were treated like simple machines or human beings depending on the instance. [[spoiler:The robots posed like Prof. Yumi or Kouji Kabuto]] were destroyed without a second thought. {{Robot Girl}}s [[spoiler: Erika or Lorelei]] were mourned when they died, and Shiro blamed Mazinger-Z for the latter's death and even temporarily hated him. However, the Gamia sisters were also {{Robot Girl}}s and Kouji did not hesitate on destroying them (although he was very unsettled and even sickened after seeing their remains since they were REALLY human-looking). In ''ShinMazingerZero'' Shiro freaked out when he ''accidentally'' sliced one of them in half, thinking he had killed one girl, but his brother's friends told him she was only a robot to reassure him. The difference on treatment seems depending on how many human traits the robot exhibits rather what side it is on.
** ''Anime/GreatMazinger'': The Mykene are a civilization whose island was destroyed for an earthquake and were forced to seek shelter underground. To survive they grafted their brains into mechanical bodies. Therefore, the [[{{Robeast}} War Beasts]] are giant cyborgs once were humans, and they were more alive than any Dr. Hell's Mechanical Beast. However, Tetsuya and Jun never seem caring at all about destroying them. Then again, Tetsuya is a BloodKnight sees himself like a soldier fighting a war, and he accepts he can die at any time. So he treats the War Beasts how he expects being treated.
** ''Anime/UFORoboGrendizer'': Duke did not particularly care about destroying [[{{Robeast}} Saucer Beasts]]... until a Vegan spy revealed to him that the Saucer Beasts he had been fighting [[spoiler:are powered by the minds of his home planet's slain people (including his own little brother)]]. Duke [[HeroicBSOD flipped out completely]].
*** Before the outbreak of the war, Kouji was convinced Earth people could communicate with folks of other planets and become friends. After the AlienInvasion began, he did not seem feeling conflicted or remorseful about shooting faceless {{Mook}}s or Vegan ships. It was different if instead of an anonymous minion they had to confront an enemy they had got to meet and know about his/her personality or motivations, though. Then they could mourn him or her, regretting his/her death and wishing things could have been different.
* WhipItGood: Several Mechanical Beasts used weaponized whips like weapons. Some examples are Gorias W3 and one of the Kikaiju from the Mazinger vs Devilman feature.
* WindIsGreen: When Mazinger-Z used Rust Hurricane it blew a powerful gale of wind from its mouth grill that disintegrated the enemy. At the first chapters that [[color:green:wind]] was [[color:green:green]] (although later it got changed to [[color:gray:gray]]). It can be justified, since the wind was charged with corrosive particles could give him that color.
* WithFriendsLikeThese: Kouji and Boss are real good friends. You would not guess it from watching how they treat each other, though. Kouji is a JerkWithAHeartOfGold constantly picks on Boss, and Boss is a SmallNameBigEgo with [[TheBully bullish]] tendencies gets angry at Kouji when he taunts him or just shows him off.
* WolverinePublicity: In the ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWars'' series, Kabuto Kouji is the worst offender/most notable example of this category (even more than [[MobileSuitGundam Amuro Rei]] and [[GetterRobo the Getter Team]]). He appears in EVERY single ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWars'' games to date. Of course it makes sense due to the fact that Kouji is the FIRST mech pilot. Removing him would be like removing your ancestor out of the family tree.
** And in most of GoNagai series, Mazinger Z characters or mechas show up, even if it is only a brief cameo.
* TheWoobie: This series had plenty Woobies:
** Shiro. His parents died when he was barely a toddler. His grandfather Juuzo took them in, but he hired a maid to raise them because he was barely in home. Several years later, in one single day, Rumi -the maid; he treated her like a a kind of older sister- was murdered, his grandfather was murdered (and Juuzo died right in front of his grandsons), and his older brother Kouji nearly stomps him under the foot of an HumongousMecha. We see during the series he is sad because he don't have parents to hang with, and Koji, Boss, and Sayaka are most likely busy fighting a [[{{Robeast}} Mechanical Beast]]. He had a crush on a cute kid called Lorelei, but she [[spoiler:died]]. And in one of the last episodes, [[spoiler:Dr. Hell created a robot looked right like Kouji and Shiro's mother. She managed to convince him she was his real mother and tried to manipulate him to blow up the Jet Scrander. Later he had to shoot her, in spite of he was not sure of she was not his real mother.]] Have I mentioned he was only ten-years-old when the series began? Later, in ''Anime/GreatMazinger'' Kouji and Sayaka travel to America and he stays in Japan. Several times he complains he finds himself alone, his older brother does not write letters, and he even wishes upon a star Kouji returns soon. Jun tried to act like his CoolBigSis because she was real sorry for him. And later in the series, he found out [[spoiler:his father was not dead. And he had let his sons believed during years he was dead.]] And then, shortly after [[spoiler:Shiro forgave him and they made up, his father Kenzo died. [[KilledOffForReal For real, this time]].]] Also, in ''Anime/UFORoboGrendizer'' Kouji Kabuto shows up, but Shiro does not, so it is fair wondering who was taking care of him. I guess the most obvious answer is Tetsuya and Jun [[spoiler:-since they were his adoptive siblings and they were not underage-]] or Prof. Yumi -since he had been a ParentalSubstitute for Kouji and Shiro in the original series. It definitely suckes to be him. Although, on the other hand, [[IronWoobie he does not constantly whine about it]].
** Dr. Hell. His parents were poor and his mother was abusing him constantly when he was a little kid, calling him ugly, telling she had never wanted to having him and her life would be easier without him, beating the crap out of him for anything... Meanwhile his father just watched and shrugged off. No child wanted to befriend him either, telling he was ugly and weird. He found a getaway in reading books and started getting exceptionally good grades in school, but the only thing it accomplished was his teachers accused him from cheating and punished him, and his schoolmates had an excuse to berate him and beat him. It went FromBadToWorse when he grew up. He fell in love with a woman but then he found out she was in love with one of the only persons had shown him respect (neither of them had wanted to make harm, but his sanity was already so frayed he genuinely believed they had pretended to be his friends to backstab him). When you look over the facts, he wants TakeOverTheWorld because he is a WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds thinks making the whole humanity suffering is a proper therapy. So if he would have not got such a crappy childhood and teenhood, he would never have gone FromNobodyToNightmare.
** Yuri, Sayaka's cousin, was an annnoying, cranky, demanding BrattyHalfPint. She acted like that because her parents were too MarriedToTheJob to take care properly of her and they never were in home. Also, she is a disabled IllGirl needs to use a wheelchair, and she refuses to undergo therapy to walk again because she is afraid of everyone will leave her alone again.
** Mitsuo, a child attended Shiro's school was a fat, shy kid wore glasses. Needless to say, bullies targeted him, and he hardly had friends. Shiro scared the bullies away once, but he told Mitsuo he could not help him and be his friend if he did not learn to stand up for himself. All that piled-up abuse was the reason of he pulled a TooDumbToLive stunt.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Dr. Hell yearns for being this!
* TheWorfEffect: In the original manga, eighteen-meters-tall HumongousMecha MadeOfIndestructium Aphrodite-A was sortied to stop a mysteryous HumongousMecha was rampaging throught a city and razing the half of it. [[spoiler:That mecha was Mazinger-Z, controled by a Kouji Kabuto was learning the hard way FallingIntoTheCockpit is not a goo idea]]. When Aphrodite's fist failed in even denting the armor of the unknown robot, and she was easily tossed asside with a simple motion, Prof. Yumi knew that robot was extremely strong and dangerous.
** Throughout the whole anime series, the Mechanical Beasts used FemBot Aphrodite-A or Diana-A to show how powerful they were.
** And in an episode a secondary character called Saijyo showed he was a {{Badass}} by beating Boss (who in spite of being the ButtMonkey was a very competent and Acrofactic fighter).
** And how they showed the Mykene War Monsters they were way more powerful and more dangerous than the Hell's Mechanical Beasts? [[spoiler:They easily trashed Mazinger-Z.]]
** Kouji himself was a victim of TheWorfEffect throughout the whole ''Anime/UFORoboGrendizer''. Already in the first episode he got shot down easily by Vegan mini-ufos, forcing Duke to reveal his true identity to rescue him.
* WorthLivingFor: In one episode, secondary character [[BrokenBird Erika]] asks Kouji why he goes so far to fight Dr. Hell, not matter how much he suffers or how many times he gets hurt. Kouji tells her it hurt a lot when his grandfather got murdered by Dr. Hell, and he does not want nobody else goes through that. And if Dr. Hell conquers the world, that is exactly what will happen to millions of people will lost their families and will be enslaved. It is because them he is fighting, not only for revenge.
* WouldHitAGirl: Kouji would definitely do -and the girl usually hit back-. Baron Ashura also did, [[{{MindScrew}} although it can or can not count when he hit himself/herself/itself]]. If it counts, then Dr. Hell also did.
* WreckedWeapon: Whenever Mazinger-Z [[RocketPunch fists]] -its most popular and most iconic weapon- were destroyed or shattered in one fight you knew Kouji was going to be in trouble. Maybe the first time happened when Kouji was fighting Spartan K5 and the [[{{Robeast}} Mechanical Beast]] easily ran its trident through its fist before beating the crap out of Mazinger-Z. A very memorable also happened in the ''Mazinger-Z versus Great General of Darkness'', when General Juuma caught his flying fist before ''eating'' it.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Baron Ashura and Count Brocken hated each other. Dr. Hell thought it would be a good thing, since they would surely try to destroy Mazinger-Z harder to upstage each other. Or course, what happened was many operations and schemes went by the wayside because they constantly fought and got in the each other's way, and they were were unable to work together, ruining many joined missions, too. Hell's mistake was born of him believing he and his troops were a FiveManBand instead of a FiveBadBand.
* In another episode, [[ThoseWackyNazis Count Brocken]] have one in which he used hostages, and cheap tricks to defeat Koji, expecting Koji to be a straight, heroic and honorable hero like pretty much most tv shows protagonist. This could have(and at times actualy) work well if not for the fact that this is [[CombatPragmatist Koji]] were talking about. In fact, Brocken does [[LampshadeHanging mention it]] by [[WhatTheHellHero complained]] about Koji's fans will cry because of that. Koji's retort? Take it like a man.
* WhyDontYouJustShootHim: In episode 39 Baron Ashura captured Kouji and Mazihger-Z and give him the "join-us-or-die" choice. After the Kouji's predictable answer, Ashura sentenced him to death. Count Brocken was watching the scene through a monitor and he stated Ashura beat around the bush too much, and he would just shoot Kouji.
** ComplexityAddiction: Later trying shooting him, Ashura started a bunch of power saws and drills to cut Mazinger-Z to pieces. To be fair, Kouji was inside Mazinger-Z, so one gun would do nothing, and they could not get him out.
** StatingTheSimpleSolution: Brocken stated shooting him would be easier and quick.
* XMeetsY: ''[[Anime/{{Gigantor}} Tetsujin 28-go]]'' meets ''Anime/AstroBoy'' meets ''Anime/ScienceNinjaTeamGatchaman''.
* XanatosGambit: Archduke Gorgon's master plan. He agreed helping Dr. Hell to destroy Mazinger-Z with his visibly more powerful Mechanical Beasts. However his true intentions were watching Hell closely and [[spoiler:making both sides weakened each other battle after battle until one side won. Then, he would annihilate the weakened victor, and the Great General of Darkness -his real boss- would conquer the surface world without any real opposition.]] Consequently, he could not lose, not matter how the war between Dr. Hell and Kouji Kabuto ended. And, indeed, he was successful: [[spoiler:he betrayed Dr. Hell in the worst possible moment, leaving him to die or personally murdering him -depending on the version-. Straight after he sent several Mykene Warrior Monsters after Mazinger-Z, and they destroyed the HumongousMecha.]] In one single day and from one single stroke he had looked after all his enemies. However, his plan did not cause the expected outcome due to a SpannerInTheWorks.
* YearInsideHourOutside: In ''Manga/NewMazinger'' Major Kabuto was accidentally thrown in another dimension. He spend roughly one day in that place before returning to his own world. His partners told him he had been missing for one entire month.
* YearX: The action in ''Manga/NewMazinger'' begins in 220X.
* YouHaveFailedMe: Amazingly averted with Dr. Hell, who admittedly can grow frustrated at the failings of his subordinates and punish them, but ''never'' kills anyone for trying their hardest and failing. Worst he did in the Mazinkaiser [=OVAs=] when Baron Ashura failed one too many times was throw him in a jail, and that was partly because Ashura had gone over his head. And even ''then'', when he saw how determined Ashura was to make it up to him, Dr. Hell let him go anyways.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: In episode 31, three workers of the Photon Atomic Research Institute were kidnapped by Ashura and hypnotized in piloting the latest batch of Kikaiju Dr. Hell had built (Megaron P1, P2 and P3). However one of the weapons of Megaron generated such a heat blast would surely kill whoever was sitting in the cockpit. Hell and Ashura knew the three men surely would die during the battle, but as long as they died ''after'' they would have fulfilled their purpose, they did not care.
* [[YouKilledMyFather You Killed My Grandfather]]: It happens in the first episode, when Dr. Hell gets Dr. Kabuto assassinated, and Kouji vows to avenge him. And it again happened to Kouji [[spoiler:and his own father, Kenzo,]] in the sequel.
* YouShallNotPass: It happened fairly often:
** An example taken from the original manga. Kouji has been cornered by several [[{{Robeast}} Mechanical Beasts]], but Sayaka shows up with Aphrodite-A to give him time to reach Mazinger-Z: [[http://www.mangareader.net/735-34820-64/mazinger-z/chapter-2.html]]
** Episode 6: A Mechanical Beast is trashing one city to keep Mazinger-Z and Aphrodite-A busy as a second Beast and a squad of [[{{Mook}} Iron Masks]] take over the [[HomeBase Photon Atomic Research Institute]]. Kouji tells he will deal with the first Beast to let Sayaka go to protect the Institute.
** Another example taken from episode 74: A Mechanical Beast was completely trashing Mazinger-Z around. Sayaka -as piloting Aphrodite-A- stepped between both and stood in the way of the Beast to protect Kouji, receiving all its attacks to prevent it from killing Kouji and destroying Mazinger-Z even though it meant [[spoiler:Aphrodite-A was destroyed for good.]]
** Episode 92: Kouji is hurt and can not fight, so [[spoiler:Boss knocks him out,]] and he and Sayaka deploy their HumongousMecha to try to hold back the Mykene Warrior Beasts marching towards the Institute. [[spoiler:They fail badly.]]
** Chapter 6 from ''ShinMazingerZero'': Three assassins [[RobotGirl Robot Girls]] -Gamia Q1, Q2 and Q3- are attempting to get Kouji murdered, but Sayaka and Boss to step in the way to protect him: [[http://www.mangareader.net/930-37872-3/shin-mazinger-zero/chapter-6.html]]
* YouWatchTooMuchX: In the first chapter of the manga, Mazinger ends up going on a destructive rampage during Kouji's first attempt to pilot it. When some concerned citizens try to tell the police about it, their claims of a "giant monster" destroying the city are dismissed with "You watch too much TV."
* YourPrincessIsInAnotherCastle: Dr. Hell is defeated before the final episode... and, needless to say, the final episode wasn't just a peaceful day.
* YourSizeMayVary: The applied scale was not consistent at all, and it could vary from one chapter to another or even in different scenes of the same chapter. Sometimes the HumongousMecha were too big or too tiny, and the human beings and other objects too tiny.
* {{Zeerust}}: This trope was abundant in the series, evident in many of the vehicles and {{SuperRobot}}s in the series. A case that stands out is an episode in which Baron Ashura captures and analyzes Aphrodite A, only for the disc with the data to be destroyed. It's a good thing the villains didn't have e-mail.
** Ironically, in another episode Ashura stored data in a sort of card had to be inserted into a computer to display the information stored in it.
* ZergRush: Baron Ashura often sent large numbers or Iron Masks to attempt to murder Kouji Kabuto -and his friends- when he was out of Mazinger-Z or to try to overwhelm or get Mazinger-Z and Aphrodite-A confused (and it worked with Aphrodite once. They were so many, so fast and so annoying they got her distracted and slowed her down). Curiously, it was inverted in the original manga once: in one of the first chapters three Iron Masks crawled in Kouji and Shiro's home and they almost got Kouji killed.
** In the original manga Dr. Hell also used that tactic in the FinalBattle, mobilizing two of his armies, a CoolShip, a CoolAirship and forty Mechanical Beasts against Japan and the Mazinger army. In ''Anime/{{Mazinkaiser}}'' Dr. Hell also used twice that tactic (and it worked in one of them!) and ''[[Anime/GreatMazinger The Mykene Empire]]'' sent huge numbers of Warbeasts all over the world to conquer the surface. Similarly, the Vegans from ''Anime/UFORoboGrendizer'' attacked Earth cities with vast fleets of mini-ufos, often backed by at least one mothership and several Saucer Beasts.
* ZettaiRyouiki: Sayaka Yumi tended to wear short skirts whether she was wearing her school uniform or casual clothes. And later in the series she wore a ''very'' short white-red skirt and knee-length, white boots. In the manga versions more female characters wore attires or uniforms that showed their tights, such like the Gamia or [[spoiler:Minerva-X in ''ShinMazingerZero''.]]

* RealityEnsues:
* RedIsHeroic: Kouji wears a dark-red LatexSpaceSuit.
* SacrificialLamb: [[spoiler: "MORIMORI-HAKASEEEEEEEEE!!!!"]]
* TheSeventies: Started in 1972.
* SeventiesHair: Well, obviously. Kouji and Dr. Hell are prime examples of this.
* ShipSinking:
* ShipTease:
* SlidingScaleOfAnimeObscurity
** quarters for his {{CoDragons}}
* TagalongKid: Shirou.
* TheThreeFacesOfEve:
* {{TwoFaced}}: Baron Ashura.
* WhamLine:
-->'''Kenzo:''' "He’s crying. My son is… My son…! [[spoiler:Kouji Kabuto…!"]]
* XMeetsY: ''[[Anime/{{Gigantor}} Tetsujin 28-go]]'' meets ''Anime/AstroBoy'' meets ''Anime/ScienceNinjaTeamGatchaman''.

* ShonenUpgrade: Late in the series, Kouji Kabuto learnt to combine his HumongousMecha RocketPunch with EverythingIsBetterWithSpinning to create Big Swing Rocket Punch (essentially, Kouji spins Mazinger's arms at full speed before shooting its fists). It counts like this trope and not like a MidSeasonUpgrade because it was not a new weapon installed into the mecha, but a new move invented by Kouji drastically increased his power (It was several times stronger than a normal RocketPunch).

Tetsuya is the performer who combines his own CombatPragmatism by using Great's wide arsenal of weapons in an unorthodox way -such as shooting Thunder Break with both weapons or using it to turning his swords into Lightning rods, his surprisingly weird way of handling swords, or covering Great with [[ChestBlaster Breast Burn]] heat energy (a movement which later would be adapted in SuperRobotWarsAlpha and turned into ''{{Mazinkaiser}}s'' Kaiser Nova).

* WolverinePublicity: In the ''SuperRobotWars'' series, Kabuto Kouji is the worst offender/most notable example of this category (even more than [[MobileSuitGundam Amuro Rei]] and [[GetterRobo the Getter Team]]). He appears in EVERY single SuperRobotWars games to date. Of course it makes sense due to the fact that Kouji is the FIRST mech pilot. Removing him would be like removing your ancestor out of the family tree.

* WhatDoesThisButtonDo: This series mixed this trope with with FallingIntoTheCockpit, and [[{{Deconstruction}} brutally deconstructed]] both of them (funny and ironic, keeping in mind ''MazingerZ'' [[UnbuiltTrope was the first mecha show where the pilot fell into the cockpit]]).

** The original GoNagai ''Anime/MazingerZ'' manga had way more ShipTease between Kouji and Sayaka than the anime adaptation (this is partially due to AdaptationDecay: original version Kouji was nicer and more considerate than his anime counterpart, which was a JerkWithAHeartOfGold ChasteHero; and original Sayaka was a {{Tsundere}} Type B instead of the Type A the anime turned her into). Thus, when Sayaka told Kouji he was being transfered to her high-school (in the early chapters), he blushed and stated he "would look forward to it".
