Ouran High School Host Club is a Genre manga created by Bisco Hatori, which was originally serialized in Magazine/LaLa from 2002 to 2010. It has a 26-episode anime adaptation by Creator/StudioBones, which first aired in 2006.

Ouran Academy is an ElaborateUniversityHigh catering to the ultra, ultra-rich. Haruhi Fujioka is a frumpy working class scholarship student, a rarity at the school. While searching for a quiet place to study, Haruhi stumbles on an unused music room which turns out to be the club room for the school's "Host Club", a group of IdleRich boys who entertain female clients in a sort of clean version of actual host clubs.

After accidentally breaking a Renaissance-era vase that's worth 8,000,000,000¥ -- far more than a working class student could possibly repay -- Haruhi is forced to join the Host Club as an assistant to work off the debt. But after Haruhi proves to be a natural Host and is promoted to full member of the Host Club it becomes clear something isn't quite as it seems...

The series is an AffectionateParody of romantic shoujo series and Reverse Harems, emphatically playing with the cliches and character types inherent in both. It hardly ever takes itself seriously, but at times emotions can run quite high, making for some touching moments amid all the silliness. The manga, however, became more serious and deeper the longer it went on, though it never lost track of the comedy. The manga was licensed as part of Viz Media's "Shojo Beat" collection, and the anime was made available in North America by Creator/FUNimation in October of 2008. In Australia, Creator/ABC3 has aired the anime many times. Both the manga and anime version of this series are well worth your attention, even if you're not part of the series' normal demographic.

A LiveActionAdaptation began airing in Japan in July 2011, and a live-action movie was released in 2012. 2021 saw them to the stage with a [=2.5D=] musical adaptation. There is also a VisualNovel for the Platform/PlayStation2, which was later ported to the Platform/NintendoDS with voices and new scenarios. Unfortunately, none of these have left Japan.

\nWelcome to Ouran Academy, a distinguished school that provides education to the children of the rich and powerful. Only the wealthiest families can afford to send their sons and daughters to the academy. Thankfully for those whose bank accounts aren't nearly as inflated, Ouran does offer a scholarship program to any hopefuls who wish to attend.

Enter Haruhi Fujioka, one such scholarship student who dreams about becoming a lawyer like her late mother. Unfortunately, her plan to study hard and keep to herself are destroyed on Day 1 when she happens upon the Host Club. This unusual high school club entertains female students through a combination of flirtatious banter and role playing, with each of its six members catering to different tastes in boys; there's Takashi "Mori" Morinozuka, the tall and stoic type; Mitsukuni "Honey" Haninozuka, the bubbly and sweet type; the Hitachiin twins, Hikaru and Kaoru, a pair of tricksters that pretend to be madly in love with each other; Kyoya Ohtori, the cool and aloof type; and Tamaki Suoh, the princely type and the Host Club's leader and founder.

Flustered by her discovery, Haruhi's attempt to leave Music Room 3 ends with her accidentally breaking an incredibly expensive vase. Mistaking her for a boy at first, Tamaki declares Haruhi their errand boy, only knocking "him" up to host status when he sees Haruhi's potential. It isn't until after he gives Haruhi a customer quota that Tamaki discovers she's biologically a girl.

Before she knows it, Haruhi is swept up into the Host Club's eccentric world as well as the private realms of its individual members. As their school life unfolds, both Haruhi and the rest of the Host Club will affect each other's lives in ways none of them could've imagined.

* BleachedUnderpants: Tamaki has a rather sanitized and family-friendly concept of what a host club is. While the gist is the same - offering girls the opportunity to spend time with attractive young men who pamper and flatter them - in Tamaki's version the guys do it out of an honest interest in making their clients happy, rather than working for the commission they earn by encouraging their clients to buy drink after expensive drink in return for their time.

* BastardAngst: Tamaki is the illegitimate son of a Japanese man and a French woman. His EvilMatriarch grandmother brought him to France in exchange for paying for her financial troubles and forbade him from ever having contact with her again. Despite this, his grandmother still treats Tamaki like crap, always reminding him that he's "filthy."
