The manga was adapted into an award-winning Korean film directed by Creator/ParkChanWook, which was hugely successful and brought a new interest to the manga, allowing the series to be translated in 2005. The film was later given an American remake in 2013, directed by Creator/SpikeLee and starring Creator/JoshBrolin. This version was poorly received and a BoxOfficeBomb.

This is a common misconception about the manga. Kakinuma doesn't have a break down because Gato figures out why he imprisoned him. He has a breakdown because he COULDN'T figure out why he imprisoned him. In the final chapter of the book Goto says that the reason that Kakinuma imprisoned him was because he was he was moved deeply by his singing. While this is partially true it isn't the full reason. Goto was imprisoned because he was moved to Tears by Kakinuma's singing. It is revealed in the same chapter that Kakinuma has never had anyone in his life who ever understood him. Goto in that moment understood who Kakinuma and how deeply sad he truly was and no amount of money, power or women could ever change that (at least not for him). While this takes a little speculation it's very likely that Kakinuma was homosexual and loved Goto because he was the ONLY person who understood him and was (somewhat) kind to him. His teacher even speculates later that Kakinuma had a crush on Kakinuma. Goto wanted to die and he wanted Goto to do it but before he did he wanted Goto to understand him. This is why he is so furious when Goto gets the answer WRONG. Kakinuma had absolutely no plan to kill Goto. He even tries to get Goto to kill him earlier on the boat by mock killing his best friend. He just wanted to hurt him the way Goto hurt him before dying by his crushes hands. The whole plot of the story can basically be summed up with a closeted gay man tries to drive his school understand him before he allows him to murder him.
