* The "Death Blossom" from TheLastStarfighter is more of a MacrossMissileMassacre combined with a bit of BeamSpam rather than a Wave Motion Gun, but it has the same energy-draining drawback.

** It's also not exactly surprising that, when looking for a potential escalation of their late-UsefulNotes/ColdWar tank guns, the Soviets designed a 152 mm high-velocity tank gun. And with the T-14 Armata, the RussiansWithRustingRockets are threating to BreakOutTheMuseumPiece.

** By the time of Anime/MacrossFrontier the concept is increasingly common in the U.N. Spacy fleet, finding itself as the Heavy Quantum Convergence Cannon of the smaller carrier Macross Quarter. Frontier also manages to pack a fully functional (if smallish) Macross Cannon into a fighter! It doesn't have as much oomph as does battleship version, but still has enough power to punch out the DeflectorShields of a capital ship. Also, while the original Cannon was an integral part of the Macross' design, posterior models of similar (and superior) classes modified it into a detachable gunpod. *** Fighter-scale craft with Converging Beam Weapons have been around since the original series.
** The Zentradi Mobile Fortresses (Fulbtzs Berrentzs class) were each equipped with a Wave Motion Gun so powerful that any direct fleet engagement essentially boiled down to the question "who will be the first to fire?" This is vividly demonstrated in the original movie where Bodolza is so adamant about opening up on Lapramiz' MF that he willingly sacrifices thousands of his own screening force ships which just happen to be in the line of fire.
** The Grand Cannon fired only a single shot in the series. The novelization of the US adaptation of the series states that this destroyed more Zentradi warships than had been lost in the entire history of the species. It makes Dolza change his mind about eradicating the humans and decide he should ally with them against his other enemies. Too bad he'd already laid waste to the Earth and slaughtered most of the population.

** The Tau Particle Cannon (known in many game files as the Gauss Gun) fires somewhat slowly, but does a lot of damage. This gets magnified if you use the charged shot. Just before obtaining it, you can overhear a scientist and a security guard getting reduced to LudicrousGibs due to the latter's callous handling of this. Incidentally, it returns mounted on the car in Half-Life2.

* Discussed in Blog/WhatIf #141; the "Sunbeam" extracts all of the Sun's visible light and bundles it up into a laser-like beam with a diameter of 1 meter hitting Earth, reducing it into a charred husk.
