** There are implications throughout the anime that Ash's Pikachu is overly strong for its species [[DependingOnTheWriter (well, usually, ignore a certain Snivy)]], such as its tendency to defeat various Raichu (its evolution that logically should be a stronger version of itself), and Team Rocket's statement in an early episode that it's "way beyond its evolutionary level", which is why they start following Ash around for the entire series and repetitively trying to steal it. It's also one of the few Pokémon shown who dislike Pokéballs.

** Yuya doesn't actually remember the moment he summoned the cards and the duel afterwards, so it takes a lot of him to figure out how they work.
** The moment the cards show up, LDS (LID in the dub) goes on to [[UniquenessDecay create their own prototypes]], which causes a brief HeroicBSOD in Yuya due to his case of IJustWantToBeSpecial combined with the cards being a LivingEmotionalCrutch for him.
** Because Pendulum Summoning is so new, many people don't know how they work and there are no archetypes built to counter them. This means that duelling becomes far more difficult for the opponent once they hit the field. In addition, unless someone is already known to use them, nobody expects them to appear in a duel. This backfires horribly when [[spoiler:they duel Leo Akaba, the BigBad who created his ''own'' Pendulum Cards.
