misuse, it's a written fanfic with no voice actors

* ''Fanfic/OnceUponAStudioVersionTwoPointOh'' is a hypothetical extended cut of [[Creator/{{Disney}} Disney's]] [[WesternAnimation/OnceUponAStudio centenary short]]. Similar to the existing version, of all of the pre-Renaissance characters who have newly-recorded dialogue in the short, [[WesternAnimation/ClassicDisneyShorts Minnie, Donald, Goofy]], Snow White, [[WesternAnimation/{{Pinocchio}} Jiminy Cricket]], [[WesternAnimation/Cinderella1950 Cinderella, Prince Charming, Fairy Godmother]] and [[WesternAnimation/SleepingBeauty Aurora]] are the only characters to be voiced by the actors who would ''typically'' play them.
** While Bret Iwan is the current "official" voice of Mickey Mouse, Creator/ChrisDiamantopoulos voices him here, as he did in [[WesternAnimation/MickeyMouse2013 the newer TV cartoons]].
** [[WesternAnimation/AliceInWonderland The Mad Hatter]] is voiced by Creator/AlanTudyk rather than his official current voice actor, Creator/CoreyBurton. This not only allows Tudyk to keep up his string of Disney Animation appearances, but also calls back to his performance as [[WesternAnimation/WreckItRalph King Candy]], where he deliberately invoked the original performance of Ed Wynn as the Hatter.
** Another Burton character, Grumpy, is played by Josh Robert Thompson.
** Piotr Michael replaces the late Creator/GilbertGottfried as Iago. He also replaces Barrett Leddy, who had voiced Iago in ''WesternAnimation/LEGODisneyPrincessTheCastleQuest''.
** Creator/JessHarnell replaces Chris Edgerly as Scuttle.
** Eeyore is voiced by Jim Meskimen, rather than either Peter Cullen, Gregg Berger, or Brad Garrett.
** Merlin is voiced by Jim Meskimen instead of his official current voice actor Creator/JeffBennett.
** Bob Joles replaces the late David Ogden Stiers as Cogsworth.
** Baloo is voiced by Jim Cummings, rather than Joel [=McCrary=] (Baloo's regular voice actor since 2003).
** With previous voice actors having hit puberty (and with Pinocchio's original voice actor Dick Jones having passed away as an old man), Griffen Campbell and Luke Lowe voice Pinocchio and Flounder.
** As Phil Harris had passed away decades prior, Creator/RichardEpcar takes over as Little John.
** Lee Slobotkin replaces Blayne Weaver as Peter Pan.
** Due to Brian Bedford's passing in 2016, Daniel Woolf takes over as Robin Hood.
** Since the new rendition of "When You Wish Upon a Star" is sung mostly in the key of A-sharp major instead of E major, Jiminy Cricket's voice is provided by his current voice actor; Joe Ochman, as trying to digitally alter the pitch of Cliff Edwards' original recording would naturally be a risky venture for Disney.

Compare SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute, FakeShemp, TheOtherMarty, ObviousStuntDouble. Directly related to CharacterOutlivesActor. Contrast with YouLookFamiliar for when the actor returns as a different character in a later installment. Can be {{Hand Wave}}d via DirectLineToTheAuthor. Often subject to ReplacementScrappy-ism. Or on the other hand, look to ThePeteBest when replacement surpasses the original in popularity. Often done with {{Continuity Reboot}}s. Occasionally explained away with MagicPlasticSurgery. Usually the replacement is a PoorMansSubstitute.

For obvious reasons, this phenomenon is much easier to hide in animated works, where actors aren't actually seen onscreen. In these cases, it might happen to a character who was originally played by a [[SpecialGuest celebrity guest star]] who would be too expensive to hire for a regular or recurring role, necessitating the casting of a professional voice actor (or [[ActingForTwo an established member of the regular cast]]). For example: Akira in ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'' was originally played by Creator/GeorgeTakei in a guest role, but by Creator/HankAzaria in all subsequent appearances; and Roger "Booda" Sack in ''WesternAnimation/KingOfTheHill'' was originally played by Creator/ChrisRock in a guest role, but by Creator/PhilLamarr in all subsequent appearances.

* ''Podcast/WelcomeToNightVale'' had Carlos's ''Literature/{{Animorphs}}'' essentially did this with most of the cover models, as the original models grew up and went off to college. The re-release, of course, did it again, replacing the original covers with updated ones and cover models who are the right age at the time of re-release.
* Steve O'Brien illustrated the
first lines (a voicemail left for Cecil) spoken four Creator/DaveBarry books. For the rest of his writing career, Jeff [=MacNelly=] (creator of the comic strips ''ComicStrip/{{Shoe}}'' and ''ComicStrip/{{Pluggers}}'') illustrated both the books and Barry's recurring newspaper column. After [=MacNelly=] died in 2000, the illustrations were done by show creator Jeffrey Cranor. Later episodes would feature Dylan Marron voicing Carlos.
Gary Brookins, also [=MacNelly's=] successor on his two comic strips.
* During her brief appearance An in-Universe example occurs in season 1 the ''Literature/DreamPark'' novel ''The California Voodoo Game'', when the role of ''Podcast/BatmanTheAudioAdventures'', Harley was voiced Bobo the guide is commandeered by Creator/HeidiGardner. Season 2 sees Harley voiced by Creator/GillianJacobs.Alex Griffin so he can keep an eye on Bishop. The players take the exchange in stride, assuming that Bobo's original Game-actor came down with the flu or something.

* ''Pinball/TwilightZone'': Tim Kitzrow, who voiced Rod Serling in the game. Justified in that Serling had died twenty years prior.
* Michael J. Fox denied permission for Creator/DataEast to use his likeliness for their ''Pinball/BackToTheFuture'' pinball. Data East ended up using a substitute actor for the voice, and artist Creator/PaulFaris had his son play Marty on the playfield and backglass art. By all accounts, neither effort succeeded.
* Creator/SternPinball's ''[[Pinball/BatmanStern Batman]]'', which used substitute voice actors for all of the characters.
* In ''Pinball/JunkYard'', the TimeMachine modes [[Pinball/TheAddamsFamily "Mamushka"]] and [[Pinball/Terminator2JudgmentDay "Payback Time"]] (in early revisions) have noticeably different voices, presumably because the original voices were licensed, and thus could not be used.
* Part of the reason production of the ''Pinball/{{Shrek}}'' pinball was delayed was due to the time required for Mike Myers, Creator/EddieMurphy, and the other actors to give final approval for their substitute voices.
* In ''Pinball/TheShadow'', Tim Kitzrow provides the voice for Lamont Cranston/The Shadow, though Alec Baldwin's speech from the film itself appears as well.
* In ''Pinball/JackBot'', Lia Mortensen replaced Stephanie Rogers as the voice of The Machine.
* ''Pinball/Alien2017'': [=MU/TH/UR=] 6000 is voiced by Carol Thiel instead of Helen Horton (as in ''Film/{{Alien}}'').
* ''Pinball/ToyStory42022'': Instead of Creator/TomHanks, Woody's voiced by his younger brother Jim (who frequently acts as a soundalike for the character in media outside of the original films).

Contrast TheNthDoctor, which is the trope for cases where character's new voice and appearance ''are'' explained in-universe. If there's a TimeSkip and most of the cast remains the same then it can be a TimeShiftedActor if the age difference justifies the particular change. For long-term cast attrition in general, see LongRunnerCastTurnover. FlashbackWithTheOtherDarrin is a subtrope where a previous scene is reshot with the new actor.
