1955 film is the adaptation of the 1897 novel

Not to be confused with the 1897 [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gadfly novel]] or unrelated 1955 [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gadfly_(1955_film) film]] of the the same name.

** [[Characters/TotalDramaDuncan Duncan]] sometimes does things just to get under the others' skin, like when he told the Killer Bass a scary campfire story about a serial killer with a hook and then scared them by pulling out a hook hand from behind his back.
-->'''Courtney:''' Duncan! That was so not funny!!
-->'''Duncan:''' Oh, yes it was! I just wish it was all on camera! Oh, wait...it is!

* ''Webcomic/{{Harbourmaster}}'' has one or two. Perius qualifies because his whole schtick is being 'the bad one' amongst a very ugly aristocratic family, and goes about needling everyone else around him -- playing up the fun scandals. And then there's Javin, who plays up the paparazzi aspect of being a PR reporter.

** Celestia is a bit of one herself. She does the TricksterMentor thing a number of times herself, and nearly always succeeds at it (in the first episode, no less!), and while she is never malicious, she definitely messes with quite a few ponies over the course of the show. Inviting the Mane Six to the Grand Galloping Gala to derail it on purpose is one of her more famous examples.

Contrast the BlitheSpirit and ManicPixieDreamGirl, who often use a very similar M.O. [[note]]modus operandi[[/note]] to ''improve'' people's lives. The DevilsAdvocate will do this in serious discussion to point out flaws in a stated position. Also contrast DeadpanSnarker who is more subdued in their mockery.

** Toph likes to use her blindness to mess with the rest of the Gaang, such as saying that Sokka's poorly drawn picture of Appa looks just like him, or shouting that she's spotted Wan Shi Tong's Library while the Gaang is flying on Appa's back.
** Whenever she's not being intimidating or manipulating, Azula also fits this trope. Even as a child, she loves to break balls.

* ''WesternAnimation/BobsBurgers'': Louise, the youngest child of the Belcher family, is constantly messing with people she thinks are stupid. This list apparently includes her school guidance counselor, her other teachers, the neighbor kids, her own siblings and anyone she has just met. Whether she's gently teasing or deliberately trying to cause mayhem is often hard to tell; either way, she always brings the joke as far as it can possibly go. [[EnfantTerrible Louise is a frightening child.]]

* ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'': Discord starts out as something of a MadGod, but once he [[HeelFaceTurn reforms]], he turns into this trope. He's no longer evil and malicious, but he certainly gets a kick out of messing with the other characters. ''Especially'' Twilight, whom he occasionally tries to be a TricksterMentor to (to debatable levels of success).

* Creator/HarlanEllison:Creator/HarlanEllison was known for being an endearingly contentious {{troll}} with a low opinion of society throughout his life. Every time he published a story, he would mail it to his English professor who told him he was a poor writer. Soon after leaving college, he was fired from Creator/{{Disney}} on his first day by ''[[UsefulNotes/TheWaltDisneyFamilyAndTheNineOldMen Roy Disney himself]]'' after he was overheard making an off-color joke. At the 2006 Hugo Awards when he came onstage to accept his award, after being asked if he would behave he simply stated "no" and put the microphone in his mouth. When appearing AsHimself in ''WesternAnimation/ScoobyDooMysteryIncorporated'' he went out of his way to be a GrammarNazi to [[LikeIsLikeAComma Shaggy]].

Everyone knows what being kicked in the balls means. Not everyone knows that making jokes about the word "balls" is a trope in itself.

* When Creator/ElijahWood was in New York promoting ''Film/TheLordOfTheRingsTheReturnOfTheKing'', Dominic Monaghan called from Berlin, pretending to be [[FunnyForeigner Hans Jensen, a German TV host]]. During the interview, Monaghan/Jensen asked Wood a bunch of ridiculous questions (e.g., asking Wood if he played soccer, then clarifying with, "Do you [[GroinAttack kick balls]]?"); Monaghan couldn't keep a straight face and was barely able to keep from laughing. The result can be seen on the ''Return of the King'' extended edition DVD with an introduction from Wood (who, once the joke was revealed, [[ActuallyPrettyFunny found the whole thing "brilliant"]]).
