The genre as it currently is began in the late 1980s and codified in the late 1990s, but it has its origins in mid-20th century "{{teen idol}}" or "bubblegum" artists such as (early) Music/FrankSinatra in the 1940s and Music/RickyNelson, Music/PaulAnka, Lulu, and Frankie Avalon in the 1950s and early '60s.
